Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Holtmann took a submitted question about his philosophy about calling timeouts prior to media timeouts late in the first half.

“I think there is value in allowing your guys to play through certain situations,” he said.” I’m not going to be super quick to call a timeout because I think there’s a poise required from going through different experiences with the five guys on the floor. There were probably times this year I could’ve called a quicker timeout. You really want your guys to go through those experiences and learn how to adapt to a hostile environment. We preach all the time make the next right play. That’s something teams have to grow and evolve into doing.”

Holtmann will often replace Liddell when there’s a break in action shortly before a media timeout to give him extra rest, even though Liddell doesn’t always enjoy it.

“You’ll see me take E.J. out a lot of time before the media and sometimes he’ll look at me cross-eyed,” he said. “I did that in the Penn State game and he did that. I want you fresh for the final four minutes. We do try to do that a lot.”

CHRIS HOLTMANN, OHIO STATE HC
10781251.jpeg

Norlander: “I'm not saying he wants to leave or would leave, I don't know, but I'm just telling you if I'm Louisville, I am looking at Chris Holtmann at Ohio State. He has a great record. He has had success at Butler now at Ohio State.”

Holtmann was the head coach of Butler from 2014-17 and then took over Ohio State in 2017. He led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons and three of his first four seasons at Ohio State. The Buckeyes were 21-10 prior to the canceled tournament in 2020. While they were upset last year, they made it to the Big Ten championship and were a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He could be a hot commodity for one of the biggest college basketball jobs available.

The guy is just blowing smoke; I'm saying Holtmann is happy here and has no intention of leaving. Besides he's signed through 2026:

Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann's eight-year contract pays $26M

I’ve seen enough. I love the guy and think he’s a really good coach, but it really seems like his ceiling is getting the double bye in the B1G tournament and MAYBE a sweet 16. Unless the B1G gets markedly worse in the near term I can’t envision him winning a B1G and that’s just not good enough.

5 years seems like a good enough sample size. I’ve been wrong before, and may very well be here. He is what he is, which in this alum’s (who isn’t Gene Smith, so at the end of the day who gives a fuck) opinion isn’t good enough for Ohio State and the resources at their disposal.
Who are we replacing him with? At this point who in the coaching world will take Ohio State Basketball to the heights you expect from it?

Did I forget to put “realistic” candidate to replace Holts?
Sure not hard. Jeff Boals who was an assistant under Matta, 23-6 at Ohio this year. Won the MAC Tournament last year and went further than Holt in the tournament. Recruited DeAngelo Russell to Ohio State. Or would you rather continue with the guy who sat Cedric Russell who was 4-5 from 3 and decided to play Ahrens and Meechie for the remainder of that game while losing to Maryland by 15 and never winning any titles or advancing to the second weekend?

No idea…and I’m not even really saying he should be replaced…just that he doesn’t meet expectations (mine yes, but are probably the expectations of most alums). Although, 6 other guys have won a share since he’s been here I’m sure there’s someone out there that could do it.

Losing 10 games every single season (and not making the Sweet 16) gets old. He is a good coach, but he needs to re-evaluate the approach in recruiting. You can't expect guys to stick around, so you need to be bringing in multiple top-50 prospects every year. You can't build a national contender when most of your top players are inconsistent scorers and you have no real lock down defenders.
