I hope IU doesn't offer Holtmann their job at twice what he makes here.
To think we were angry at Gene for flubbing the end of Matta causing us to miss out on Archie...Hands off.
Also, for everyone hating Holt...he’s very well regarded. OSU is lucky and should keep supporting him. It’ll work.
Yeah. That was a weird week or two. Especially when everyone was saying Gene was "zeroing in on" Greg McDermott. Woof.To think we were angry at Gene for flubbing the end of Matta causing us to miss out on Archie...
Also I jut wish he would recruit some functional 6'10 guys. Even someone the level of potter would be huge for the this team when playing a functional big on the other side.
I’ll be very curious to see what happens to the landscape after the NBA & NBAPA agree to let High School kids enter the draft.. I also wonder if they wouldn’t go with a Baseball style rules where its, you go straight from High School or you have to go to college for like what 3 years?Yeah. That was a weird week or two. Especially when everyone was saying Gene was "zeroing in on" Greg McDermott. Woof.
Some people will never be happy with Holtmann. There's a large segment of this fanbase that started following tOSU hoops when Matta was regularly reeling in blue chip recruits, winning 28-30 games and going to Elite 8s and Final 4s. Fact is, Matta for a period, was an elite coach and recruiter who we happened to come across at a strange time in CBB. That's not to say tOSU couldn't find another coach to reach those heights, but given our history, the odds of snagging that aren't great and you could certainly end up in a worse spot than a coach who will roll out of bed and win you 20 games and get you to the tournament each year. I want more, but I'm aware it's more likely we find worse than better than Holtmann.
College basketball coaching changes: Grading the best and worst hires from 2017 after a full recruiting cycle
Ohio St.
The hire: Chris Holtmann
The closest candidate to A-level, Holtmann has to get dinged due to losing to No. 15 seed Oral Roberts in this year's NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes are 87-43 (.669) in four seasons under Holtmann, who has a quality 46-32 record in the Big Ten (highest finish: second, in his first season). He's had an NCAA Tournament-level team every season since he arrived; he's the only coach on this list of which that's true, which is why he's ranked highest. Holtmann hasn't led the Buckeyes on a Sweet 16 run yet, though, and hasn't won a Big Ten title. He's the right man for the job, but there's still room to grow. GRADE: B-plus.
Man, that was a bad cycle.
