Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

What did Evan Turner text Chris Holtmann about Ohio State's Big Ten tournament run?

Thad Matta will always be Evan Turner’s coach. Together, the two helped build a new era of Ohio State men’s basketball, one that for Turner culminated with being named the 2010 national player of the year by multiple outlets before becoming the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft.

So while that bond is a special one, it hasn’t precluded Turner from building a special connection with current Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann. As this year’s team was battling Illinois to what would become an overtime loss in Sunday’s Big Ten tournament title game at Lucas Oil Stadium, Turner was watching and cheering – and not just for that game. Reaching the title game after three high-level wins in as many days was a feat itself, and in the immediate aftermath of the 91-88 loss Turner had to get that message across.

Moments after the game, as the Illini were celebrating their first conference tournament championship in 16 years, Turner texted Holtmann.

“I told him the way the guys stuck together and battled through a four-day war made me proud to be a Buckeye,” Turner said. “And I wished him luck in the future.”

Crazy the swings CBB brings. One month ago, he had this team looking like they could beat anyone and was one of the frontrunners for National Coach of the Year. 30 days later and the fanbase is gonna be very restless. Year 5 is going to be a very important one for Holtmann. I don't think he's gonna be on any kind of hotseat, necessarily; but the natives will grow increasingly restless if he can't have a very good season and make some noise in March.

When this team was on, they could beat anybody. Today was a perfect storm. Turnovers, poor 3-point shooting (only 5 made), and 50% from the line will not win you a game.

However, I do not care what anyone may say, this team over-achieved. Liddell and Washington were not consistent "go to" guys. The depth was not consistently good. They lacked ideal size on the front line with no one over 6'9". With the lack of depth, the injuries had an effect. Especially without Young, Sotos, and Towns playing on one leg all season. I have no idea what happened to Ahrens but he was a big reason for that mid-season streak and the reason for the late season swoon. This team went as far as Liddell AND Washington could carry them this year.

The only way Ohio State improves is better recruiting. It's not really Holtman's coaching (Except today). The best coaches have bad moments. However, he needs to trust his players more because it looks like he loses trust in them too quickly which in turn impacts a players confidence.

Not the way I hoped the season would end but next year is very important for Holtman's future.

Name of the game is athletic, shooting and driving wings. The slow mechanical ones that can’t create don’t work.

Need an upgrade big time.
Absolutely Holt needs to change the roster to add a lot more quickness and speed, along with finding a true center and floor general. It has been glaring how poorly the current roster fares when an opponent aggressively pursues rebounds and loose balls. The ball never seems to bounce OSU's way because other teams are bigger and faster in general.

If next season is similar, what does Gene think?

At this point it's hard to have a reasonable negative or positive opinion about Holtmann. Every season has been such a combination of highs and lows--if we struggle on D we are good on O and vice versa, if we win big one month we will lose a lot the next, if we have a big lead we will find a way to lose it, if we play a good opponent or mediocre opponent we will play at whatever level makes the game close--that all kind of washes out into a sea of 2nd tier conference finishes and no S16s.

But unless Gene is able to get the kind of money that OSU typically reserves for football coaches, I don't see who OSU could get that would be a guaranteed upgrade over Holtmann's results. It would have to be a gamble.
