Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

attachment.php

You know, when they forced Khruschev out, he sat down and wrote two letters to his successor. He said - "When you get yourself into a situation you can't get out of, open the first letter, and you'll be safe. When you get yourself into another situation you can't get out of, open the second letter".

Well, soon enough, Charlie Weiss found himself into a tight place, so he opened the first letter. Which said - "Blame everything on Ty Willingham". So he blames the Scourge of the Earth, it worked like a charm. He got himself into a second situation he couldn't get out of, he opened the second letter. It said - "Sit down, and write two letters".

There is one difference with OSU that supports the "graveyard" terminology.

Every coach since 1950 - including Woody - was fired. Even though all said coaches are now in the CFB HOF.

...and every coach at Texas since DKR was either fired or "forced out"

...and Oklahoma has fired five coaches since Bud Wilkinson

...USC has fired multiple coaches over the same time period

...as has Notre Dame

I just don't buy into the "graveyard of coaches" jargon. What choice was there but to fire Woody after throwing a punch at an opposing player? Earle Bruce was probably a victim of Woody's success, but how would most elite programs react now to eight straight seasons with 3 losses? What choice was there in the Cooper matter? His record against his chief rival gets pretty much any coach at a major program fired, not to mention the other issues going on at the end of his tenure. It's not like these guys were let go without cause.

Back on track, uh, Charlie's as good as gone. Chalk up another NoD firing.

In defense of jo4h, there was a good deal of talk about how difficult it would be to find a coach after Earle, and especially after Cooper. There were a lot of people (and some on this board, well, on another board) who were simply flabbergasted that guys like Mike Bellotti and Gruden and other "household names" du jour were not fighting all over themselves to get here. When Tressel was hired, there were cries of "Who?" and "How in the hell did we have to settle for a friggin' D-IAA coach?" Having inside knowledge of the Tressel family from a family member of my own, I remember talking to a couple of OSU staff members in 2001. They were ready to get rid of him and saying what a mistake it was to "settle" for him and all that. I told them to mark my words, he would come through, and they would be singing a different tune. Sure enough, it only took one year (I was still there...thanks Coach :wink2:) and they were then saying how they knew it all along, of course.

But the bottom line is the finalists for the job were Glen Mason and Tressel...2 fine men and 2 great coaches (well, one great coach and one reasonably good one for turning bad teams into mediocre ones), but not the kind of finalist list that other programs have had when their job was open. I am not being negative here, just saying that I think I get his point, and he does have one.

True. There was a time roughly a decade ago that tOSU wasn't the job it once was, or currently is. JT has built this program into one of the truly elite out there. You add the prestige, the 105,000 fans every week and now the facilities and it's hard to come up with much of a list of who tops what you can have in Columbus.

"I have never blamed a player. That's just now how I operate, but this week I have film for you folks that want to fire my ass, film that proves that they're the reason I lost to Navy..." or words to that effect.

A Mount Everest of ego...

Dedicated to Fat Charlie.

So, given three losses on the season, (along with three skin-of-the-teeth wins) and a second home loss to Navy, what will have to happen for Charlie to lose his job?

1) Three losses including Navy? Grab the pitchfork while I light the torches.

2) Beaten by Navy and Pitt? Get a rope, Ma, we're gonna string that fat ass up in the big oak tree.

3) What, Navy, Pitt and Stanford? Hand me my shootin' iron. On second thought, make it the 12 gauge .

4) So he lost his last three games, he almost beat SC and Michigan got lucky. It's too expensive to fire him. Besides I believe he does give us a schematic advantage, whatever the hell that is.
Everyone has said that this doesn't matter.
A good question at this point is:
"If we buy out the whale's contract, can we bring anyone in at this time that can do a better job than the last 3 coaches?"

As I previously said, theres a chance Clausen won't hang around next year if the coach changes, his chances of improving his stock would be slim. Tate may leave as well as a result. Didn't work out too well for Paulus to hang around another year when Lou left, and he's the QB coach now. He'd probably push Jimmy out the door himself

They won't stick around if they think they are going high in the draft anyway. Notre Dame is no place to stay right now.
