Game Thread CFP Semifinal: Ohio State vs. Clemson, Sat 12/31 @ 7p ET, ESPN

it's all good. I didn't think anyone was really breaking balls, just wanted to make sure I was being clear on what I am seeing from those tables.

Clemson has faced 4 offenses similar to what OSU can do (L'ville, Pitt, VT, FSU) and each team has pretty much hit their season average in points.

They have faced 1 defense like they will see vs OSU in Auburn and were held to just about what that team averages allowing.

All the special team metrics favor OSU (although neither team is exceptional in this area) and Clemson is TO prone whereas OSU is good at creating TO's.

Anything can happen in a football game but there are reasons to be confident for OSU fans.
All good points. In the end you have two very good teams that are matched up in what should be a very good game. I hope our line play is solid enough to handle their line.

btw fellow Buckeye fans, if you're feeling down just like watch The Chase Is Complete as it will make you smile.

If this wasn't semi-directed toward me, I'll be shocked. Either way, I appreciate it. Because I may need to run it on a loop constantly.

Currently, I've progressed from Alka Seltzer to Nexium & a bland food diet.

BTW, decided to face the beast (literally), bite the bullet and request 1/7 & the morning of 1/9 off work. Wish me luck. And, I'll just go ahead and post this one more time as a reminder of my plight.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after losing to a team from the State of South Carolina, have the Bucks not gone on to win a championship the following year every time?

You guys are starting to sound A LOT like me... looking for answers based on crazy facts.

Then again, you have yet to go that far down the rabbit hole. I'm just sayin'....be careful. This thing spirals quickly.

THREE KEY MATCHUPS TO WATCH IN FIESTA BOWL TILT BETWEEN CLEMSON, OHIO STATE

78101_h.jpg,qitok=trdJPeEL.pagespeed.ce.zgJjArpi_C.jpg

Don’t look now, but the Fiesta Bowl matchup between Clemson and Ohio State is just over two weeks away.

The Buckeyes and Tigers are set to meet Dec. 31 in a national semifinal with a berth in the College Football Playoff national championship game on the line. Ohio State is searching for its second national title in the last three seasons; Clemson hopes to avenge last year’s loss to Alabama in the championship game.

The game features just about anything one could possibly want in a college football contest. Urban Meyer and Dabo Swinney are two of the sport’s best coaches. There is NFL talent all over the field at virtually every position.

It has all the makings to become an instant classic. Here are three matchups that will play a big role in determining a winner between the Buckeyes and Tigers.

OHIO STATE’S DBS VS. CLEMSON’S WRS
If you’re looking for NFL talent, look no further than the battle between the Ohio State secondary and Clemson’s wide receivers. The Buckeyes have three potential first-round picks in safety Malik Hooker and cornerbacks Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore, while the Tigers have what many analysts feel is the No. 1 wide receiver prospect in the country: Mike Williams.

Clemson has four wide receivers with at least 400 receiving yards and its tight end, Jordan Leggett, has 637 receiving yards. The Tigers are going to spread Ohio State out and throw the ball around to various options. Williams is unquestionably the top target, but Leggett, Deion Cain, Artavis Scott, Hunter Renfrow and Ray Ray McDonald give quarterback Deshaun Watson an abundance of choices.

Buckeye cornerbacks Conley and Lattimore — both potential first-round picks — in addition to nickel Denzel Ward and safeties Hooker and Damon Webb will have their hands full. Ohio State plays press coverage on the outside and leaves its corners in one-on-one matchups with the receivers, so the winners of these individual battles will go a long way in determining who wins the game.

“It's going to be a great challenge," Conley said. "These are the best receivers we've seen so I feel like it's going to be our biggest challenge this year."

No Huddle Breakdown: Defending the Clemson Offense

NoHuddleClemsonOffense.jpg

The Clemson offense fields a lot of playmakers that can shoulder the load when they take on the Buckeyes later this month in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. More importantly is to understand the ways in which the Clemson Tigers move the ball. While the Tigers rank No. 5 nationally in passing offense (4,324 yards), the stats can be deceiving. Likewise, the Tigers rank No. 56 nationally in rushing offense with 2,250 yards, or 4.5 yards per attempt.

The stats do not tell the whole story of the Clemson offensive scheme. Rushing plays count as passing yards and passing plays count as rushing yards. The end result is a team that ranks No. 6 in total offense and averages over 500 yards per game. Furthermore, the Clemson offensive unit is best in the country when it comes to third-down conversions. They are successful 51.5% of the time.

When viewing the Clemson film, it is important to understand their approach when they line up. The most important aspect of the Clemson spread offense is the designed reads and packaged plays in which the scheme is built on. As you will see in the video breakdowns below, the Tigers do a great job at analyzing the pre-snap alignment of the defense and playing the numbers game between the match-ups occurring inside the box and the alignment outside the hashes.

In this edition of No Huddle Breakdown: Defending the Clemson Offense we take a closer look at the bread and butter of the Clemson Tigers offense heading into the matchup in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.

Inside Zone Running Game vs. WR Screen

The Clemson Tigers utilize a fair amount of wide receiver screen alignments in their spread attack. As mentioned earlier, if the numbers are in their favor outside, they will throw the screen all day long to move the chains. Consider the WR screen to be their “Outside Running Game” with Artavis Scott and Hunter Renfro utilized the most in these alignments. If the defensive backs are playing close to the line of scrimmage, the inside zone becomes the go-to option for the Tigers.

The key for the Ohio State defense, primarily outside the hashes, is to utilize the strength of its defenders in man coverage. Gareon Conley, Marshon Lattimore and Denzel Ward have excelled this season when placed on an island. They will have to play aggressively in order to limit the easy “chunk” yards and force the Clemson offense to play inside where the teeth of the defense awaits. The Ohio State linebackers will be alerting to the inside zone runs of Deshaun Watson and Wayne Gallman, a look they have prepared for all season long.

No Huddle Breakdown: Defeating the Clemson Defense

NoHuddleClemsonDefense.jpg

As we saw in last week’s No Huddle Breakdown (posted above), the Ohio State defense will have their hands full defending the offensive weapons of Clemson when the two teams meet in the College Football Playoff Semifinal. This week’s edition will examine how the bread-and-butter plays of the Ohio State offense will be impacted based on the defensive tendencies of the Tigers, but also hint at some wrinkles that can be uncovered to spring a big play.

QB Draw

When the Buckeyes need a tough yard, they ultimately lean on the legs of J.T. Barrett to keep the chains moving, and when you see an empty set you can bet the mortgage it will be a quarterback draw.

In the ACC Championship Game, Virginia Tech quarterback Jerod Evans had some crucial conversions off of the quarterback draw, largely due to poor tackling by the Clemson linebackers and secondary.

The Clemson defensive front runs an array of stunts and twists to confuse the offensive line and generate pressure. Should the Clemson defense dial up a stunt when the Buckeyes utilize their quarterback draw, it will be crucial for J.T. Barrett to be patient in order to let the stunt fully develop in order to open up an adequate running lane.

As noted in the video below, the addition of a lead blocker (i.e., Mike Weber) will aid in the effectiveness of the play, while also disguising the intentions to a small degree.

This game comes down to which QB plays better. What that really means is what offense allows their QB to have the most success. I think it's pretty even in talent so it comes down to Ed and Beck calling a great game. Urban be ready to take the reins if need be. Go Bucks!

How well JT plays hinges on the OL so I would argue it comes down to how well they play
