CBS names All-Decade Team

Er, as a Packers fan I have to disagree. I love Hawk, but he doesn't have good hips and instincts in pass coverage, and it shows. Teams go right at him, and he can't cover top-shelf NFL TEs.

That being said, I would draft him ten times over again.

But it's not based on anything to do with the NFL, it's based on his performance in college (also called VGS and BCD - Vernon Gholston Syndrome and Bobby Carpenter Disease ). Hawk I think was a better player at Ohio State than Lauranaitis was, award volume notwithstanding. Remember, AA recognition and awards are not just a function of the player, but of the competition level of other players at that position that year. But would I take JL over BC or AJ based on what I saw of them in the 'Shoe (OK, and on the road)? I don't know, but I don't think so.

LOL at your entire argument. Just because football has been played for over 100 years means we should ignore some great accomplishments of recent players.

Let's use your timeline of 100 years (even though we both know football has been played before that). That means 1909 is when I should start considering QB's for the greatest ever.

I don't consider any worth mentioning until Sammy Baugh. Then I have no one on my Top 10 list until Jim Plunkett and Roger Staubach. From there we can consider guys like Archie Manning, Steve Spurrier, Jim McMahon, Doug Flutie, Jon Elway, etc but honestly I don't think they are as good until Charlie Ward. I then have Charlie Ward, Tommy Fraizer, Peyton Manning, and Danny Wuerffuel in the 90's. Not saying that those other guys I mentioned or guys like Troy Aikman, Ty Detmer, Chuck Long, etc arent GREAT players because they are but I have these other guys just a little bit higher. I mean you can disagree with me, but to say that you wont even finish my post because it is soo unthinkable that those three should be mentioned is foolish.

I don't have Elway up there because of his production at Stanford. He is a top 3 pro QB and the most talented QB ever, but in college he doesnt crack my top 10 personally.

Basically my Top 10 QB's of all time look like this (no order):
Sammy Baugh
Jim Plunkett
Roger Staubach
Charlie Ward
Tommy Fraizer
Danny Wuerffuel
Peyton Manning
Matt Leinart
Vince Young
Tim Tebow

Let me see your list before you begin to judge?

And to the person who said "Well other QB's have won the heisman before". I didnt use the Heisman as my only critiera for getting on the list. When I gave the credentials of these guys I mentioned that two of them won the award, that between all three of them they have 4 NC's, and over 80 wins and less than 15 losses.

I mean have you watched Vince Young and Matt Leinart play? Vince Young carried his team to two rose bowl victories, a national championship, and a victory over tOSU in the shoe. It's not about just things you can list on a post. Did you watch the two Rose Bowls and the game vs. OSU? Or the multiple times he had 200 yards passing and 200 yards rushing to help get his team into the title game?

Leinart from Day 1 as a starter was a All-American. Yeah he had a lot of talent around him, but he was still able to beat guys like Matt Cassell for the starting job ans just because you have talent doesnt mean you always have success (Chris Rix, Brock Berlin). He is one of the most efficent and productive pro-style QB's ever. I mean how is this a fucking reach?

Tebow you can have a solid argument with, but personally I feel he is up there. He has had a complete career in 3 years, and he has the chance to win his 2nd heisman and 3rd National Title. When someone like Bobby Bowden compares Tebow to Bronco Nagurski you should pay attention. I mean if you want to leave him off for a Elway or Flutie then go ahead, but I personally feel he is a special player.

I don't think it's such a reach to have three GREAT QB's on this list. Just because they happen to have been around recently means jack shit. Does this mean I can't have Herschel Walker, Barry Sanders, and Bo Jackson on my Top 10 RB list since they all played in the 80's.

I'm sorry I don't have Johnny Lujack, Davey O'Brien, John Huarte, etc on my list from when my dad was a kid. You shouldnt just throw down old players names to seem fair.

Oh yeah BTW Scout agrees with me on two of the three (This is before Tebow):
Scout.com: Tuesday Question - All-Time Greatest QBs

So I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with you, and please from now on dont talk to me like I don't know football before 2000.

I apologize, you obviously have given it some thought even though I completely disagree with your assessment.

Anyone who uses Championships and Heisman's as the criteria for a college QB's greatness at least has to acknowledge the unique nature of CFB's glamor vs non glamor teams. A QB from OSU has a huge advantage in both departments over a QB from say Indiana.

I still think of Brad Smith and say plug him in Tebow's spot at UF and they don't miss a beat. Leave him at Mizzou and he's easy to forget.

Notice you started your argument with "two of them are Heisman winners."

Other QB's fitting your criteria from the first post:
Sam Bradford: Heisman winner, 22-4* (.846), lost to UF in NC game.
Troy Smith: Heisman winner, 25-3 (.893), lost to UF in NC game.
Jason White: Heisman winner, 17-2 (.895%), lost to USC in NC game.

The list goes on.

Just because I started my argument with Heisman doesnt mean that is the sole reason. If I started it with wins/losses would you be throwing out names like David Greene and Ken Dorsey to disprove me? I'm just saying that when a player wins "The Best Player in College Football" award then it should be added to the resume of great accomplishments.

Also considering that only around 25 QB's have ever won the Heisman than I dont think its that big a reach to think that some of the 10 best QB's ever won the award.

Obviously the award isnt everything for a career (as seen with Vince Young/Tommy Fraizer) but its something. I just used that as one of the multiple reasons why I have Tebow/Leinart up there. I also have them up there from what I've seen with my own eyes (04 Rose Bowl/05 vs Notre Dame/08 vs. Georgia/08 SEC Championship Game/Etc.)

Hey no problem we always get fired up over football.

Also I understand your point that non-big team QB's should get more respect like Robert Griffin in the coming years will not get nearly the credit he deserves because he plays for Baylor and he has the chance to be special.

Personally I've watched the three we are arguing over more than older QB's. I've seen them in live games and replays, and I have them high because of what I've seen not only facts on a sheet.

When it comes to Brad Smith. I think he was a great/fun college player, but I personally think Tebow is the better passer. Also the offensive system Tebow is in helps him a lot, and I think Tebow is a great leader/tough player.

I don't know call me crazy :P

The thing that gets me is that the people who don't want to see Tebow up there that high are the same people that act like he doesn't have another year to improve on his accomplishments. So is it true, that basically anything he does,he can't move up the poll in people's eyes?

When Tebow won the heisman his stats were excellent. He passed the ball, but still had the ability to run. He isn't just a one dimensional player. He does whatever it takes within the system to win.

There's thousands of people who are waiting on the edge of their seat to see him make a huge error. Whether it be within the team or an error on the outside world. "I knew he wasn't perfect" "its great to see him fail"...It's funny to me at least, when people complain about the media fantasy..As if they are forced to click any link that says "tim tebow",and the media should only be fixated on what an individual poster on a forum needs..No, really nobody is that important, and yes he has more success in life then you..Get over it

DaddyBigBuck,

Just saw your rep on my long ass post on QB's this decade including my Top 10 list. Can you explain how I'm lacking perspective? I find it funny that people continue to say my list sucks yet only a couple people post their own "perfect" lists. Also considering that this is all opinion I don't get why I lack perspective considering I'm a younger guy. I respect older guys, and I think the best RB's ever were in the 60's-70's, but that doesnt mean I should put down old QB's just because I have to show respect for old guys.

Another poster told me the same thing you did, and when they made their own list they included guys like Mike Vick and Ken Dorsey. Let me see your top 10, so I can see "real" perspective on the world of college quarterbacks.

This would have been a great candidate for a PM.

To be honest, I'm not really all that interested in the discussion. Everyone has their own standard of value, so the topic is so subjective as to be completely pointless to me. Why bother comparing athletes from different eras?

As for you needing perspective... I regretted that as soon as I sent it. It was a mistake. It's not that I don't believe it. It's just that providing you with perspective is your dad's job and I doubt that I'm your dad (was your mom ever in Singapore?). Seriously though, it was none of my business to even make that observation. I apologize.

And for what it's worth, that comment had very little to do with your list.

And I would not be me if I didn't answer with the following:

When you consider the rarity of that sort of change in PE from one year to the next by one player (in fact, in the case of the "Plummet", it's the only time it's ever happened); then yeah, I think that sort of description is warranted.

Consider the rankings... The 156.7 was fourth in the country. The 125.4 was fifty seventh. That's a plummet.

hrm.

You must spread some reputation around before giving it to DaddyBigBucks again.
