CBF40's look at '13 recruiting

Surprised we aren't looking to take more on the o-line. Just from a pure math standpoint, it doesn't make much sense to be taking more guys on the d-line than the o-line every year - even though I know we rotate more on defense. But don't you think depth is still a serious concern on the offensive line?

Also, it's tough to gauge who the staff will take at certain positions. Unless they plan on moving Blake Thomas to the offensive line, I'm not sure why we'd be taking two TEs this year even with the new offensive philosophy.

You're generalizing all TEs. There are different types. This staff sees a need for one blocking/receiving TE in the traditional sense as well as one H-back. Hence the need for what I list as two TEs.

Four could certainly be the number at OL. But I just don't see the staff pursuing a lot of bodies outside of Lisle, Lazzard and Pocic at this point...so I went with three. There are still plenty of other options on the radar such as Dorian Johnson, Kyle Meadows, Derwin Gray, Alex Gall and Khaliel Rodgers.

Still way too early to tell but this class wouldn't shock me:

QB: Barrett (add Trubisky if they like what they see at camp)
RB: Elliott (add Green if the staff pushes hard, however I don't see a need)
WR: Gibson, Quick (add one of Allen or Lemay)
TE: Baugh, Heuerman
OL: Lisle, Lazzard, Pocic
DE: Bosa, Neal
DT: Sprinkle, Price, Hurst
LB: Anzalone, Kimbrough
CB: Burrows, Woodard
S: Thompson, Bell
AT: Marshall

That's 21 without adding any of the guys in parentheses. 22 if they add another WR.

Let's update this:

QB: Barrett (add Trubisky if they like what they see at camp) unchanged
RB: Elliott (add Green if the staff pushes hard, however I don't see a need) unchanged
WR: Gibson, Quick (add one of Allen or Lemay or Jacobs if room)
TE: Baugh, Heuerman? (sounds like he is really struggling with his decision)
OL: Lisle, Pocic and one more (removed Lazzard...maybe Dorian Johnson? Derwin Gray? Someone currently off the radar?)
DE: Bosa (had Neal here, moving him to LB)
DT: Sprinkle, Price (removed Hurst...word is he wanted to commit but was told they are full at DL)
LB: Anzalone, Neal (does that spell the end for Kimbrough?)
CB: Burrows, Woodard
S: Thompson, Bell
ATH: Marshall

Another big question that won't be answered until next season is do they need another kick specialist? Buchanan is done after this year so the question is can Frank E. really punt at this level? If not, they may have to take a punter this year.

Without a punter, another QB, another OL, another WR, another RB and without Heuerman that is 17. Most likely to be added would be Heuerman, Trubisky and another OL. That's 20. 21 and 22 could be best available if no punter is needed...a Devon Allen, a Jaylon Smith, a Tashawn Bower, etc. The type of kids you will have to recruit all the way until Signing Day.

What I love is the staff will be able to focus on a handful of 2013 kids while also starting to identify top 2014 talent...

I didn't follow Florida recruiting well, but the answer is probably from his history. Does Meyer recruit scholarship punters? Tressel deemed them important enough to use scholarships on not just one, but multiple kickers/specialists. But Meyer could go the more traditional route of getting preferred walk-ons and then award scholarships to the winner of the job?

Urban recruited Chas Henry at UF....he was the #1 punter in the nation in 2007. Here's his profile from Scout http://florida.scout.com/a.z?s=168&p=8&c=1&nid=2538819

I believe he won the Ray Guy award as a senior.

I am curious as to why you list Bell, Pocic and Quick the way you do. Are we really sitting that well with all of them?

What are the alternatives at safetey? Bell or Bust?

How did I list them?

Top two choices appear to be Bell and Cravens, with Bell being much more realistic at this point.

Is Treadwell not considered a realistic option? I thought we gained a ton of ground during his recent visit, but then again, I don't have premium...

Let's start over...

This was my original post:

Still way too early to tell but this class wouldn't shock me:

Followed by:

Let's update this:

Just because I don't have someone listed doesn't mean the staff isn't pursuing them. This thread has always been our prediction thread. This is simply a class I could see taking shape. It is written in the thinnest of pencil...not pen.

So is Treadwell an option? Yes. Do I see him in this class? No, but that doesn't mean that could change. I just see other and/or better options for OSU.

Four weeks ago I did not see OSU with a current set of verbals that included Baugh, Barrett, Sprinkle, Bosa, Anzalone and Neal. Now look where we are. Imagine who we will be talking about in another month...or even after the camp circuits...or come the first home game.

I would update my list but everything is in such flux, I don't know if UFM could put together a list himself. However, my thoughts moving forward:

- Wow. Whoever we get past this point is gravy. UFM just keeps adding to his legend...landing Bosa and Baugh were nothing short of spectacular. Anzalone was a huge battle won as well, it was pretty close a couple weeks ago.

- If we get Pocic, I'm comfortable with the tackle position (Decker, Dodson, Pocic, Lisle) and would like to see Rodgers added as an interior OL. If we have room, another tackle wouldn't hurt but I would honestly rather not pass on guys like Green, Thomas, LeMay/Allen, etc. to get a 4th...most of our top targets are off the board, no need to reach.

- Jaylon Smith is number 1 on my wish list moving forward. Smith/Anzalone/Neal would be a ridiculous LB class. I still think Smith is a top 10 player nationally and I hope we can beat out the Domers for him. Pocic is a close number 2 and we are sitting pretty with him.

- I would like Heureman, but I will not be too upset if we miss on him. I will be confused as to what happened, but it leaves a spot open for McNeil, whom I like just as much, if not more.

- I still see Dymonte Thomas being a part of this class, just not sure how with numbers. I like Bell a tad more as a player, but I would rather have a scUM commit/top 5 player in Ohio who is at the same level (just my imo).

- Still curious to see how WR recruiting shapes up. Gibson is basically in, Quick is looking good, and I think we take a 3rd. I am hoping for Allen (I think he has the most complete skill set), but I have always thought a lot of LeMay.

- I think we're done at DL unless we get some 5 star type that wants in.
I'm not sure any of Bower, Hurst, Munger, or Daniel fit that bill. I think Hill is close but I'm thinking the staff holds off accepting any DL commit for awhile to assess numbers.

That's the "right this very minute" opinion/clarification I was looking for. Unbelievable how dynamic and fluid OSU recruiting has become since November. Thanks.
