CBF40's look at '13 recruiting

Still the official prediction thread, right?

With one open roster spot and 14 seniors, there should be a minimum of 15 schollies. Hankins and Roby punching their tickets into the NFL would give us 17, and 3-4 transfers should give us 20-21.

Best guesses at this moment:
QB (2): Barrett & Trubisky
RB (1): Elliott
WR (3): Marshall, Gibson & Quick
TE (2): Baugh & Heuerman
OL (3): Lisle, Pocic & Montelus
DL (3): Price, Sprinkle & Bosa
LB (3): Anzalone, Love & Smith
DB (4): Burrows, Woodard, Thompson & Thomas

With 9 in the bag and Gibson, Heuerman, Anzalone, Love and Bosa likely to join this class, that leaves about 7 spots in play. How they juggle the last few spots may depend on what they see out of the young players on the roster this fall.

Agree with pretty much everything but Smith and Thomas. I think Smith goes Irish and Kimbrough gets his offer and joins the class. I think Thomas is staying blue and we pursue some national db's.

I think they're going to go hard at Alexander. With Alexander, you'd have arguably the top cover corner in America to combine with Woodard playing the boundary, and maybe more importantly could allow Burrows to slide inside to safety, which I think is his more natural position. Or the staff could continue their pursuit of both Cravens and Bell, which are two of the top safety prospects and keep Burrows at corner. Bell is more probable but could still be a tough pull from the South.

I think right now it's really hard to project who the third OL will be (assuming Pocic goes with the good guys). Montelus has as good of a shot as anyone else, imo.

I'm skeptical of the Thomas talk so put Bell in that spot for me. He's really flying under the radar but seems to have had a great visit.

Barrett is in

Agree 100% about Gibson, Anzalone, Love, and especially Bosa. I think Heuerman is looking for every reason in the world not to come to OSU and compete with his brother.

I think Jaylon Smith is in

Thoughts on sticking with only Barrett for qb, and instead taking someone like Green (rb) or a national guy (i.e. Alquadin Muhammad)? Regarding Green, we are stocked at rb but as we have seen from earlier OSU teams and Alabama now, there is no such thing as too much rb depth.

Use that scholly on someone else and wait until next year, get in early, and pick up a truly elite heir for Braxton. Don't get me wrong, Trubisky is a great qb, but unless he chooses soon we won't have space.

Cravens isn't getting mentioned. Is he just a pipe dream?

Definitely a long shot, but with

Imo, we should still pursue trubisky. Who knows what he could be in several years with development. I do remember us taking both zwick and smith in the same class. And UF took cam Newton and john Brantley in the same class as well and we see how that's going. Crazy stuff can always happen when kids get on campus. Not saying or hoping for anything bad to come from barrett but u never can always tell about a kid. The qb position is always hard to project and healthy competition and depth is always strong in the long run.
and I definitely agree on still taking green at RB. Depth cam turn into an issue in the span of a game or two.

I'm in the take 1 QB camp unless someone is too good to pass up. 4 QBs for next year is plenty and have some good options for 2014.

Think we need 1-2 WRs, a safety, 1-2 LBs, and an OT. If we get Bosa and Heuerman as we should then it just limits the open spots that much more.

I wouldn't want to run out of room for a Jaylon Smith or Von Bell type because we took 2 QBs unless 1 proves he's that good. I like Trubisky a lot but don't think he's good enough at this point to take him over some of these guys at other positions we are after. Also think we need to keep a spot or 2 open for a guy that blows up during camp season.

Are you already thinking that Cardale Jones or J.T. Barrett aren't potential heirs to Braxton?

They aren't fully polished, but I think between the two we could find another high quality starting QB.

+1. I was originally in the '2 QB camp' early (it's only April?!?!?!) for the 2013 class, but with landing Barrett and good early returns with Barker & Crest for 2014, I don't really see the need for 2 QBs in this class. I'd like to finish with something like this:

QB (1)- Barrett
RB (1)- Elliott
WR (3)- Quick, Gibson, Allen
TE (2)- Baugh, Heuerman
OL (3)- Lisle, Pocic, Lazard/Montelus
DL (3)- Sprinkle, Price, Bosa
LB (3)- Anzalone, Love, Smith/Kimbrough
DB (4)- Burrows, Woodard, Thompson, Bell/Thomas/Cravens
ATH (1)- Marshall

Might be a few too many (21), but that's why the coaching staff gets paid the big bucks & not me :p.....obviously an exciting time for all of us and this class is certainly living up to, if not exceeding, its expectations.

THIS. Exactly what I was thinking. That would be a terrific class

No I agree, if we didn't have Cardale I would be all for definitely taking Trubisky. But with Cardale, now Barrett, and Guiton at least for the next 2 years for depth, we should be all set for this recruiting cycle.

One thing I lost sight of in this exciting period is that none of these kids have played a single down in their senior seasons yet. It's probably not a wise idea to fill up now and not be able to take the studs that inevitably pop up as signing day approaches
