CBF40's look at '12 recruiting (BP's prediction thread)

We've still got Shugarts for a year and Adams for half a year as well.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Jack Mewhort start taking some snaps at T. He was supposed to get a look there when he first got on campus, but I know he's been an interior player on our line. He's got the size to be a T, not sure about his feet.

But yeah, this is where not having Kalis and Dodson right now really stings. They BOTH would be looking at being in the 2-deep at T the moment they'd get on campus.

Good call on Mewhort but I was under the impression he was going to end up being an interior lineman. I was also referring to next season, not the season that starts this year. Dodson and Kalis would both have to play right away in the 2 deep. If a quality tackle recruit looks at our depth chart they would have to be salivating. Go Bucks

Mewhort can play four positions. He is not a LT. He will either start or be a utility guy inside, with Norwell starting and backing up both tackle spots.
Based upon the limited numbers, I think that Mewhort will end up playing tackle before he's done here with Norwell at LT and Mewhort at RT. We just cannot afford injuries...at all.

I probably missed something, but I was under the impression that Norwell would be at one tackle, and that Marcus Hall would be at the other. That's for the next two years after this one, and would give OSU another two to fill up the two-deep. Having two true tackles in this class would be a key, as Shugart and Adams will be here for their final year.

Also, it appears that people get a chance to fill the places, and either are more successful somewhere else, or someone 'beats' them out for that position. Not certain how some of the incoming frosh will pan out, but I'd rather train up a B player, who wants to be here....Bobek will probably be the center, and there is talent in the guard positions. Depth is the concern, and giving the first team a rest now and again is key to continued drives.

If one reviews the scoring by quarter, OSU seems to put forth most of the points in the fourth and second quarters. That tells me that the depth allows the 1's to get some rest early on, and when the opposition D is tired in the second/fourth, our O-line is fresh and opening the holes or holding the line for the passer....

Wow, great post. We may be crying the blues about recruiting, but offensive tackle is one of the very few positions we can offer immediacy playing time in the 2 deep. If the sanctions aren't murderous we still have time to talk to great OT prospects.

BTW, I watched the replay of the 2003 national title game. Left tackle was held down in that game freshmen Rob Sims, who never was a left tackle. Bottom line, we'll be alright.

Didnt we have a potential preferred walkon tackle in last years recruiting class.....maybe we strike gold there. You would think some stud LT would jump on board this year, the playing time is there. Any chance Farris slides over to play LT he definitely has the measurements. Go Bucks

After this year, Norwell and Hall are more than likely our OTs for 2012 and 2013. We actually should have a pretty strong OL for those 2 years, with Norwell-Mewhort-Bobek-Linsley-Hall all having quite a bit of experience by then. Depth would be a concern though, obviously.

Truth is if we dont have a project work out or land a couple really solid 2 deep tackles this year we could be in big trouble if we have an injury. Next season we have Hall and Norwell with Mewhort backing up for RT. That is a little scary. Hope we land a few good ones if not somebody is going to have to provide depth.....Farris or Baldwin....etc. Go Bucks

Kirk Barton wasn't the greatest OT in Buckeye history, but he wasn't bad. Kirk was a 3 star, 260 tight end At Massillon Perry high school. Back before we became so arrogant; we talked about how JT recruited power, speed, and big speed. Now if we don't get a top 8 at every position, we complain.

Today's question: What did Kirk claim to do in high school that made him unique among JT recruits?

Logic and history are turning my opinion against the anti-Bollman; anti-Tressel O-Line zealots.

There is a good case to be made that, compared to Wisconsin and Iowa, the Buckeyes don't recruit and/or develop NFL caliber lineman. But, the win-loss record, and the NFL players from the other areas, justifies the ongoing philosophy.

7 to 10 flexible, and talented, lineman are usually sufficient. And, using fewer OL scholarships, frees up more of the 85 schollies for the other areas of the team. And, the DB/ RB/ WR/ LB/QB areas are more likely to suffer injuries, and are a little harder to predict as far who will be 'elite' NFL talent.

Further, elite high school lineman have to be drawn to the smaller numbers. They want to get on the field early, and with less competition -- that is more likely. The O-lineman are less valuable in special team play. And, there is a greater likelihood that a 6-4+, 300 lb HS walk-on will develop into a starter on the O-line vs athletes at other positions.

Elite offensive line prospects could be drawn to the numbers situation. But has that happened? It looks like we're just not offering enough numbers wise. Or are slow on the trigger? The ideal would be to offer and get a mix of Elite and flexible kids.
