CBF40's Look at '10 recruiting

Let me caution everyone when it comes to speculating on attrition. Other than folks who are candidates to go to the draft early please DO NOT speculate about specific players. If there is a credible rumor it belongs in the rumor mill.

We do not make guesses about which Buckeyes may or may not transfer.

2. Gibson is gone. Others rumored at one time or another to be conisdering the jump are Chekwa, Hines, Heyward, and Torrence. Of those four, it's JMO but I think Hines is the most likely. On top of the two rumored transfers, there's another one from that position group I could see entertaining the idea. There's usually a surprise transfer and/or a medical waiver as well. I'd say that takes the number to at least 7.

Chekwa I can understand, but Hines?

Repeat. We avoid speculating about specific players in the recruiting forum.

He was speculating about Hines going pro, not transferring. No one has specifically mentioned a player as a transfer candidate outside the RM.

I don't understand how some are saying we get Braylen Heard at RB when numerous others stated that it was pointless to go after Howard at RB because we already have at least 7RBs and getting 1 more in Smith.

Gotcha! Didn't know Heard was a high prospect at DB too

Either that or we need to move Saine to corner. Looking at a very crowded backfield and five would be underclassmen.

And in that regard, let's say we add Henderson to the fold. Two years from now we could be playing five 5 star OL with guys like Marcus Hall rotating in. Can you imagine how attractive that would be to a prospective RB candidate?

From JT's presser today:

REPORTER: In regards to recruiting, what's the target number you guys would like to land in this class? I know things can change with guys leaving early or transfers.

COACH TRESSEL: Sure. In the 20 range.

REPORTER: Low 20s probably?

COACH TRESSEL: No, like 20. The lowest 20 you can get.

Looks like 7 more is the number.

Erik Howard couldn't help us on defense.

Not to diminish the value of Howard's contributions on the offensive side of the ball the past 4 years at Hoover, but after watching him play both ways plus special teams, it is my opinion that Howard was the best defensive player in the Federal League. He received Mr. Ohio for 2008 and 2009 because of rushing yardage, but he also was a ferocious and dominant Middle linebacker as well.
Possibly a moot point if Howard does not qualify, but the value of Howard as a "big speed" category contributor cannot be mistaken. Tressell has taken the "speed" category candidates like Ginn, Gamble, Torrence, and "Big Speed" candidates like Adam Homan, Boren, and Reggie Smith, and made the best of them.

The difference from Homan and Boren is the frame. Howard has a runningbacks frame. A MLB mentality with a RB's frame doesn't help at this level, unless you possess some incredible blend of speed to go along with it (Rolle). The real debatable fact is how Howard can help on offense. And even that potential is going to be strained given the number of quality backs that we have.

Simply put, Howard is a great RB and a great HS LB... but doesn't have the high ceiling of some of the other players that we already have. That plus our depth at those two positions is already stacked, which all in all leads me to believe that Howard might spend a year in prep school (or grayshirt).

Bingo...everybody has brought up grades, but I never was keen on an offer anyways. I think not only is his frame maxed out, I think he is likely peaking physically as well. With Hyde making it in, we should have 7 scholarship backs (Hall, Hyde, Berry, Herron, Martin, Saine, R. Smith), with Brown a possibility and a heck of a walkon in DeLande...that is plenty of talent. Add to the fact that in '12 there will be difficulty in convincing Shell and Dunn they will hit the field behind all that talent (minus Herron and Saine). And whoever we decide to take in '11. Point is, I never saw Howard getting an offer, even with grades...no debating he was a great HS player though.

Don't know how much you have seen Howard firsthand, but I disagree with a "contrast" of frame and speed to B Rolle. Having watched Hoover often over the past 4 years, I believe Howard is built much like Rolle, tad taller, but very similar in lower body strength, quickness, instincts and speed.

The dilemna for an EH offer as you and many have noted is the depth chart at the RB position.

Tressel's word which I believe was genuine last spring--if EH qualified, tOSU would have an offer for him. Jim Tressel gave him a specific academic criteria in order for him to get an offer. Did JT do that to inspire him to achieve it or show how impossibly difficult it would be for EH to meet tOSU admissions? I believe that JT believed his academic criteria was reachable for EH.

So where did/do the coaches project a 5' 10" 220 lb RB/LB with 4.55 speed other than a general category of "big speed?"

Prep school is a reality if EH's GPA does not meet NCAA clearinghouse, (Repository report claims he has a qualifying ACT score).
If he does meet clearinghouse standards, Howard would seemingly not opt for an tOSU Grayshirt (family finance issues) with offers on the table from Cincinnati, Colorado, Illinois, and others who are waiting to offer when he qualifies.
