CBF40's Look at '10 recruiting

So what are people thinking the rest of the class is going to look like? I've heard the number 20 thrown out there for total schollies.

1) Joyner
2) Henderson
3) Anderson
4) Bryant
5) James
6) Floyd
7) Hankins?

I think it will end up:

Joyner
Anderson
Bryant
Floyd
Henderson
Verlon Reed

I don't think we get James or Hicks...but with getting those names I listed I would be more than happy. That would make us have potential 5 star (top 25) players with Anderson, Floyd, Henderson, Joyner, as well as still having a shot at Hicks...and we all know that Roderick Smith is a 5 star caliber talent.

I think that Louis has the same type of game changing ability as well, if we finish with this group I like the fact we bring game changers at so many different positions.

Agreed on everything but I do think Corey Brown should be a 5 star and I always have said that. Now that he had a full healthy season on display for his highlights, I think he could be a 5 star by the end of the year...reportedly he was amazing.

I agree with this list, and I also agree with the posts that followed yours; Louis and Brown have serious potential as well.

If we got all those guys, that would, of course, be amazing. Henderson and Joyner are the two most likely to not come here IMO, but I really, really hope that they do.

The one thing I'm worried about is lack of OL. I really wanted 3 in this class. When it comes down to it, as good as '08 was, we still only got 3 in that class.. And then 2 in this class, even if it's two studs like Henderson and Norwell, would leave us a little thin I think. Especially if we're laying it all on the line with Henderson at signing day, and he goes elsewhere.. Then we're looking at just Norwell. I think we need to be looking for someone else, if we're not already.

If we get those first 5, I would be ECSTATIC. Anybody else added to the class would be gravey.

Funny thing is that we're rumored to be leading for all 5 of them right now!

For real, if we get even 3-4 of those guys we're doing pretty good! I think we're still in some real good shape for Hicks though, James might be lost

Why is James lost? I don't understand how you came to that conclusion. He will be on campus this Saturday 12/12. If it has anything to do with the Duke "rumor" then that was a different Matt James, not OUR Matt James. Also, Hicks is pretty much gone. We're running third in this race and have been for a while. If anything you need to just switch your above opinions of both Hicks and James.

Ok, I'm going to take a shot at this, so when I inevitably screw up somewhere, please correct me.

Right now we have 13 2010 commitments:

01. J.T. Moore, DE, Boardman, Ohio; 6' 3", 225 lbs - committed on 9/11/2008

02. Jamel Turner, DE/OLB, Valley Forge (PA) Military Academy; 6' 3", 206 lbs - committed on 12/16/2008

03. Andrew Norwell, OL, Cincinnati Anderson; 6' 7", 275 lbs - committed on 02/04/2009

04. David Durham, LB, Charlotte (North Carolina) Christian; 6' 3", 226 lbs, 4.7 forty - committed on 02/23/2009

05. Scott McVey, LB, Cleveland St. Ignatius; 6' 1", 215 lbs, 4.5 forty - committed on 04/25/2009

06. Taylor Graham, QB, Wheaton (Illinois) North; 6' 4", 211 lbs, 4.9 forty - committed on 06/23/2009

07. Roderick Smith, RB, Fort Wayne (IN) Harding HS; 6' 3", 216 lbs, 4.5 forty - committed on 07/01/09

08. Drew Basil, K, Chillicothe, Ohio; 6' 0", 180 lbs - committed on 07/02/09

09. Darryl Baldwin, DL, Solon, Ohio; 6' 6", 245 lbs, 4.7 forty - committed on 07/19/09

10. James Louis, WR, Delray Beach (FL) Atlantic HS; 5' 11", 178 lbs, 4.4 forty - committed on 07/29/09

11. Chad Hagan, DB/RB, Canonsburg (PA) Canon-McMillan HS; 6' 1", 210 lbs, 4.29 forty - committed on 08/06/09

12. Tyrone Williams, WR, East Cleveland (OH) Shaw - 6' 7", 215 lbs, 4.5 forty - committed on 08/29/09

13. Corey Brown, ATH, Springfield (PA) Cardinal O'Hara - 5' 11", 180 lbs, 4.45 forty - committed on 9/13/09

We had 17 available scholarship spots going in, and so that leaves 4 scholarships that are currently available according to Mili's chart. It sounds like Hyde will be coming in this year, so that takes us to 3 scholarships, unless he or another of the already-commited 2010 recruits grayshirts.

In my opinion, we sign each of the following, and I'm listing them in order of how likely, IMO, they are to do so (pure conjecture fueled primarily by what I've read on this board):

1. Bryant
2. Anderson
3. Reed
4. Floyd
5. Henderson
6. Joyner

If we landed all of those guys, we've got to expect either an attrition of 3 or some grayshirts in there. I personally don't see a lot of grayshirting going on with this year's class (maybe one) given how stacked 2011 seems to be in Ohio and elsewhere. Additionally, we're still at least in the discussion for (again, these guys are listed in order of how likely I believe they are to sign with tOSU):

1. Hankins
2. James
3. Hicks
4. Linder

though it would seem that, at the very least, Hicks and Linder are increasingly longshots at this point.

Furthermore, we're apparently now back in contact with Brandon Heard after he tore up the state playoffs, and are presumably looking at him as a running back (which just seems crazy with the logjam we already have there). And of course, the name Eric Howard continues to float out there in the background, but the interest in Heard doesn't bode well for him.

The crux of all this is that, unless reports are off, taking another 7 or so for the 2010 class seems like a very real possiblity. With grayshirts unlikely, on its face that would suggest we will see some sort of attrition to the effect of 3 or 4 spots. So questions for you guys:

1. First of all, let's figure out the actual scholarship count. Mili's list still includes Shaq Rowell, which I'm confused by. He's not on scholarship, is he? Wouldn't that give us an extra scholly? If so, does Hyde grab this one? What is the status of Dawaan Whitner? Several months ago, I was under the impression that he was a more likely candidate to come to Columbus than Rowell. Any insight anyone?

2. If we are looking at attrition, who are the most likely candidates? Gibson comes immediately to mind for me. Heyward would be next on that list, though I'm not at all convinced he doesn't want to come back. After that, no one really jumps out at me as a strong candidate for leaving early for the draft. There are rumours about the transfer of two players, but I'll leave that to the rumor mill. No matter what, we're almost certainly looking at 3-4 spots opening by attrition, IMO. I see Gibson leaving and at least one transfer. After that, I really don't know.

3. Do you see anyone that is currently signed not ending up with tOSU? If so, who? Hagan? Louis?

4. Who is the most likely not to come to tOSU of those 6 listed above that I see signing with us? Joyner? Reed?

5. Who is the most likely to sign on my list of 4 that we're still in on but I'm skeptical about? James? Hankins?

6. Do you expect more offers to go out? Heard is all of the sudden the one name that seems to be a possibility. There were continuing rumours that Elam may actually still be in play for us, though I have a hard time believing that. If we do send out more offers, does it suggest someone we're otherwise confident on isn't going to end up here afterall, or do we have room somehow? Personally, if we don't see another OL offer go out in the next month or so, I have to think the staff is actually pretty confident about James. I just don't understand how we only take 2 OL in this class if we're actually looking at signing 20-21 kids.

Love to hear everyone's opinions.

1. Shaq is out. Whitner was a slim longshot that has likely ended.

2. Gibson is completely gone. Chekwa & Hines will strongly consider it. Heyward is returning. There can also be 4th year juniors who don't come back for a 5th year if they aren't contributing. There is typically 1-2 that transfer out.

3. I didn't see Louis signing, but he looks like a pleasant surprise for many including me. Hagan is a possibility.

4. Henderson. He's too high profile to feel confident about, especially against the likes of USC (even though he is a midwest type of kid).

5. Hankins is the only I'm following with much hope there. Linder resurfaced but I'll remain skeptical until given good reason to change. I think we land 6-7 tops from those two lists.

6. There are always 1-2 offers late in the game. Elam is done to UF.

Let me caution everyone when it comes to speculating on attrition. Other than folks who are candidates to go to the draft early please DO NOT speculate about specific players. If there is a credible rumor it belongs in the rumor mill.

We do not make guesses about which Buckeyes may or may not transfer.

1. Mili's list also includes Jake McQuaide which I didn't think was on scholly. Take away him and Rowell and you get to 6 available. Add in Hyde and we're back to 5.

2. Gibson is gone. Others rumored at one time or another to be conisdering the jump are Chekwa, Hines, Heyward, and Torrence. Of those four, it's JMO but I think Hines is the most likely. On top of the two rumored transfers, there's another one from that position group I could see entertaining the idea. There's usually a surprise transfer and/or a medical waiver as well. I'd say that takes the number to at least 7.

3. To me the least likely to sign is Hagan but even that seems remote.

4. I would think Joyner is the least likely to sign with the Bucks though I still think we lead.

5. Hankins

6. Yes. Happens every year.

Here's all current recruits that could end up signing in order from most to least likely IMO:

1) Christian Bryant
2) Latwan Anderson
3) Verlon Reed
4) Sharrif Floyd
5) Seantrel Henderson
6) Lamarcus Joyner
7) Braylen Heard
8) John Hankins
9) Matt James
10) Jordan Hicks
11) Brandon Linder
12) Jerry Gates
13) Rashad Frazier
