CBF40's Look at '10 recruiting

Here's a peek at Santiago Mason, a 6'4, 320 pound DT from Warren G. Harding High School.

Santiago Mason Highlight Film

He's a big kid, that's for sure. It seems to my extremely unexperienced eye that he plays too high at times and just relies on his size to overpower people. He would fit the bill for a big hole stuffer that a lot of people have been clamoring for, but he doesn't really fit the prototypical DT that the OSU coaches seem to go after.

Since we are done with 09 and we are looking at about 20 ships here is kinda how I see things working out...

Qb - I think everyone would be in agreement with taking 1. Right now it looks like either Montana or Gardner...I take the approach of pushing Montana if they feel he is the better prospect and feel that they have Gardner if they offer him soon. So give it a couple weeks to get a feel on Montana, and then offer Gardner and let the first one to commit have the spot...

RB - I say we take 2. I know we took 2 or 3 however you look at it in 09. But my thinking is there are a ton of prospects for these 2 spots...Ware is going to be a battle, but he is my favorite...Then there is Brown, Howard, and others...Not sure who the 2 will be, but I say 2...

WR - I say 2. There are some good prospects in state, but I say we are going to go out of state for some big names early and see what kind of interest we get then wait for camp for guys like Robinson, Hubbard and some other guys in state. I would have Tyrone Williams as the number one guy in state, if we were to offer anyone early...Really like Tai-ler Jones, Dyjuan Lewis, and Terrance Casper out of state...There are also some others that I am sure will pop up...The kid from VA suppossedly with an offer...

TE - I say at least 1...And I am hoping that Alex Smith is that 1. I like the kid from Illinois as well, but not sure how hard we are going to push for him. Alex some others that might get interest in state if we think about taking 2.

OL - I say 3/4 No reason not to continue to bring in lots of talent on the OL. We already have the 2nd or 3rd best lineman in the country in Norwell...Would love to land Henderson, but don't see it happening...James looks to be a battle...I wouldn't mind seeing an offer to Donnal soon...Then there are some others instate and some big names out of state we will go after...Either way we should finish with a great OL class for a 3rd year in a row...Too many very good prospects not too...Brandon Linder is another name I would like to see us go after, from STA in florida...

DT - I say 2 to keep the depth, but right now it is hard to say where we are going to go...We gotta go OOS unless the staff likes Davis in state, but really not sure OOS. Barnett is the kid from Oklahoma, but it is going to be very hard to pull a kid from there...Baldwin is a guy that if he were to commit could outgrown DE and end up here...

DE - I will go with 2. We already have Moore...I like Elliot, Gholston, Bryant, and Ken Wilkins is another name thrown around the past couple days...No reason for the staff to rush things, maybe really with the depth they have built they are in position to really take a look into these guys, and wait for some big names nationally...

LB - McVey and Turner would be an amazing LB class in itself...Right now we have a ton of LB on the roster, but the staff might want to go after one more...Obviously they would love to land someone like Fortt or Hicks, but right now I don't see it happening...We will continue to look nationally for a big name, or maybe look instate...We might look to add a MLB type if there is one we like in the process...

CB/S - I say we follow up last years big class with 4 or 5...Joyner would be an amazing coup, but he is going to be a very hard pull out of Florida...I really like Dorsey, Bryant, Anderson, Givens in state and hope they get offers, but with so many instate names out there, it is hard to to get a feel for who is actually going to get offered, and who we might go for out of state...

That puts us at 19-21...Which would be about right and if we can pull some national big name recruits to go with the couple 5 star and high 4 stars in state, we will put together another top 5 class. As many have said look for this class to be pretty much wrapped up by the time the season starts...

Right now we don't have many offers out there, but I am sure we will see a flurry of 10 or more over the next month or so...

Also great to lock up 2 5 star instaters this early...

Not that it matters, but I doubt the early commits remain (or even debut) at 5-stars in the rankings just b/c the buzz is not around them anymore. Now if they wait until signing day for sure 5-star players!!!! :oh:

FWIW, here are four sleepers to keep an eye on. I'm not saying they will end up being OSU caliber, but none of them are being talked about much right now and they each have a chance to get into the top 25 in Ohio.

Devin Clodfelter (5-10 190 TB, Columbus Independence). As far as I can tell, he leads Ohio in rushing yards thus far this year with a nice combination of speed and physicality. Independence always seems to have a stud tailback, although none has yet done much in college (e.g., Erik Haw, OSU and Jackson St.; Jacob Ramsey, Cincinnati; Luther Nicholas, Urbana). Perhaps Clodfelter will break that trend.

Marcus Rush (6-3 210 LB Cincinnati Moeller). Rush had a solid year as a sophomore, but was in classmate and fellow LB Nick Galvin's shadow. However, he has really stepped it up this year and may have a brighter future than Galvin. He compares favorably to former Moeller player Greg Jones, who now starts for MSU.

Antonio Kinard (6-4 195 LB Youngstown Liberty). Kinard is overshadowed by seniors Fitzgerald Toussaint, Isaiah Bell, and Julius Ferrell, but Kinard is a prospect in his own right. Rangy and athletic, Kinard should burst onto the scene in the spring combines.

Micah Robinson (6-3 240 DE Cleveland John Adams). John Adams has come out of nowhere this year, and Robinson is a big reason why. He has double-digit sacks on the year and has had some games where he's been completely dominant. In a great year for DEs in Ohio, Robinson is one you don't want to forget.

Another sleeper to keep an eye on is Toledo Central Catholic's Nate Hobbs. Hobbs is a 6-0 180 cornerback/wide receiver who had a very nice year on both sides of the ball before his team was shockingly beaten in the first round of the playoffs. I think he'll end up in the Big Ten, no lower that a MSU-caliber program.

Considering Bucknuts has profiled Kinard and Robinson over the past week, I wonder whether they'll be having articles on Rush, Clodfelter, and Hobbs soon. Seriously, though, keep an eye on the other three. I think they'll garner as much attention as Kinard and Robinson when all is said and done.

I just remembered another name that hasn't been mentioned lately...Terrance Talbot. I remember thinking he would be a top 10 player in the state and a possible OSU offeree. If Bryant and/or Anderson likely project at safety, I could see an offer going out to Talbot with an impressive camp. He isn't someone that wows you with tangibles, but he is a flat out player and comes from an OSU friendly area. I would personally only have Anderson and Bryant ahead of Talbot at this point.

There seems to be lots of athlete types in state...You have Givens, Harris, Dorsey, and Drummond as well...

I do like talbott as well...It will be interesting to see where the staff goes in terms of offers...

Agreed and very little seperation in talent it seems. Usually that means we try to go out of state, but we'll see.

Pre-summer camp:

Verbals:
LB: Scott McVey
LB/DE: David Durham
LB/DE: Jamel Turner
DE: J.T. Moore
OT: Andrew Norwell

Guesses on the rest of this class:
QB: Nick Montana
RB: Roderick Smith
WR: Tyrone Williams
OT: Andrew Donnal
CB: Lamarcus Joyner
CB: Christian Bryant
DE: Darryl Baldwin
LB: Jordan Hicks
ATH: Spencer Ware
ATH: Bobby Swigert

I would like to see a DT in this class but since no names have popped up yet I haven't added any on this list.

I don't think Joyner is going to be as tough a pull as some of you may think.

Joyner has already expressed some desire to leave the state...huge positive for you guys

Miami has a huge need at DB and they are the local school...negative for you guys

If Miami has another 6-7 win year then the crap that shannon is selling about bringing the U back is going to start to lose a lot of weight on the recruiting trail....huge positive for anyone recruiting south florida

Chris carter is selling OSU to many of these kids.....huge positive for you guys

STA's head coach (Coach Smith) does not push kids to any particular school. He guides them through the process but does not push. Huge positive for anyone that recruits STA.
