CBF40'S Look at '09 recruiting

True, but redshirts effectively increase the size of the 2010 class. Not to mention, we'll probably have at least one or two players transfer/go pro.

Unless there are some serious class/position balance questions, I think the class should take as many kids as they can this year as long as they fit in the program some how.

Redshirts offset the effective size of any class so any 2009 RS are likely to be offset by 2010 RS. The only argument I see for going out of balance in 2009 is if there is a one-time opportunity. For instance if our recruiting leverage were expected to decline or this was a unique talent-rich pool.

But on the contrary, our recruiting leverage seems to be increasing year by year with no reason to expect a change - unless we have no ships to offer.

As for the talent pool ... kids are getting bigger and faster every year. Is there a basis to suggest the 16th (or more realistically 20th since there will be losses) player next year will be less talented than the 26th or 28th available player this year?

Of course not, but there's that old adage. One in the hand is worth two in the bush. It's also not like these other offers are going out to questionable players early. Everyone getting offers appear to be legit big time players with plenty of big time offers.

I guess I have no problem with getting these players now instead of waiting til next year and hoping to get a player as good as someone like Justin Green or Corey Brown.

And another point in reference to a class of 26-28...

We have 45 underclassmen on the roster. Bring in just 25 and that takes you to 70. That leaves only 15 spots for the class of 2010 - a number that can grow only with transfers and early departures of current Sophs in two years (Saine, Heyward, ???) . I just don't see it.

What I see is with 70 underclassmen you are going to see a decent amount of guys looking to transfer...As you said earlier no one wants to be the 11th DB, but they all think coming in they can be the #3 or #4 guy...But someone has to end up as the #11 guy, that is what leads to transfers...

If the right guys come they will take 26 or so...If Adams/Boyd/Debose/McGee want to come and that puts you over 25 you do it...You obviously put a limit to the spots, but you make exceptions...Ride the wave of the Pryor committment and all the momentum we have...Build up those classes as those are going to be the ones with a great shot at NC's...Strike while the Iron is hot...Worry more about balance later...The redshirts allow for balance...

we should play a game next year.
starting jan one the first of every month you submit your list of (say 25), one point for every month that you have a guy on your list. say you have jim otis on your jan list, you get a point if he commits before feb 1. redo this each month but minus one from the list for every kid who commits. most points whens a specified vprize...

Kinda like the vbet we had a couple years ago when LJB contented that we wouldn't get so many of the guys on my list...

There will always be transfers but the younger players on the roster have to have wide eyes when thinking about all the players that are leaving after this season. We could actually lose our top 5 DB's...add patterson and Lane. Thats 7 DB's leaving in one year. Chekwa and Amos might leave after 2009. We could have 9+ DB's leave in the next two seasons due to NFL, grad, Tranfers, and discipline. People ask why we are dishing out so many DB's schollie look at the freaking roster.

Then look at Linebackers same thing. Three of the top 4 Lb'ers are gone after this season...two have been moved to DE or Leo.

Here's my updated class (27 being the target number):

QB - none...not enough spots
RB - Jaamal Berry
RB - Carlos Hyde (soon to be red)
RB/WR - Jordan Hall
FB - Adam Homan (like others, not rulling out DL or LB)
FB - Zach Boren
WR - Duron Carter (soon to be red as well?)
WR - Chris Fields
WR - James Jackson
TE - Reid Fragel
TE - depends on the rest of the class
OL - Marcus Hall
OL - Jack Mewhort
OL - Corey Linsley
OL - Chris Watt (if not Watt, then possibly Thornton or Longo)
DT- John Simon
DT - Pat Muldoon (OSU and ND battle, IMO...hope he picks OSU but won't be upset if he chooses South Bend as OSU has a real shot at Adams and/or Ezell)
DE - Melvin Fellows
DE - Jonathan Newsome
LB - Storm Klein
LB - Jordan Whiting
LB - Dorian Bell
CB - CJ Barnett
CB - Dominic Clarke (I think he could be a great nickel back early on, much like Chekwa)
DB - Brandon McGee (OSU leads but do they wait? If not, one of Green, McDougald or Banks could fill this spot)
S - Jamie Wood
S - Vlad Emilien
ATH - Corey Brown

BOLD = offered
BOLD & RED = committed

That leaves one spot...possibly another DB like McDougald...maybe another ATH like Green or Banks...possibly another TE like Sims or Hageman...possibly another DL like Adams or Ezell. Could be first come first serve...

I think what makes the Clarke commit so surprising is we are all refreshing expecting to see something that reads "Carter/Hyde/Berry/Brown or Emilien Is a Buckeye".

And the surprise for me is not just that the staff offered yet another DB, but that this kid was willing to jump in to a very competitive arena. His lack of big time offers clearly has not affected his confidence.

You would rather have Muldoon over Ezell or do you think we just have a better chance at Muldoon.

I think the staff would take either...I know they like Muldoon or else they wouldn't have offered him so early...I also happen to know that they love Ezell's potential (6-foot-5 260 lbs 4.7 40 with the frame to add weight and not lose speed)...I don't think there is room for all three (Muldoon, Ezell and Adams) but I think we could see OSU land two of the three, but that could squeeze out one of the other guys who are jockying for that last spot (McDougald, Banks, Green, Sims, Hageman, etc.).

For the record, I would be surprised if they didn't find a way to fit in Justin Green...unless the staff is planning on making that spot first come first serve between him and Brown, with Brown likely to pull the trigger soon. If they take both, maybe they are sending a message that they are not going to wait on McGee. I don't know and don't pretend to know exactly what the staff's ideal class looks like...

I'll be happy w/this list is this is the way it plays out. We'll see...thanks for the updates, 45.

I'm going to give this a shot, just for fun.

RB: Hyde
RB: Berry
FB: Boren(though I fully believe he'll get a fair shot at LB and it would not surprise me at all if he impresses there.)
FB: Homan
WR: Fields
WR: Jackson

WR: Carter
TE: Fragel
OL: Hall
OL: Linsley
OL: Mewhort
LEO: Newsome
DE: Fellows(this kid reminds me a lot of Heyward)
DT: Simon
DT: Adams
LB: Klein
LB: Bell
LB: Whiting
DB: Clarke
DB: Barnett
DB: Wood
DB: Emilien
DB: McDougald
DB: McGee
ATH: J. Hall
ATH: Green

I think we miss out on Watt and though the coaches would like 4 OL, I don't see one we have a realistic shot at that is tOSU-quality. Longo may be the best bet.

I think whoever verbals first between Brown and McDougald gets in and the other gets left out. McDougald said he wants to take visits though and Brown seems closer to making a decision. Hard to say which one will decide first but I went with McDougald since he's from Dublin.

I think we'll pull off an upset with Adams. I go back and forth on our chances with him but today I'm feeling good about him. Especially if we can beat USC.

I see Muldoon choosing ND but that's just a hunch.

I think Hyde, Berry, Carter, and Emilien are Buckeye locks and it'll be too much for McGee to pass up.

I would love to have Green. He reminds me so much of Flash Thomas with the ball in his hands. But, he has some other offers that are tempting(UL and Cryami) too. If I'm guessing, we win out.

That list is very doable...I could see Watt and Muldoon going to ND just as easily as I could see them at OSU. The nice thing is the staff will know Watt's intentions by the end of the summer and will have plenty of time to evaluate and decide if they want to hand out another OL offer.
