CB Jordan Hancock (Official Thread)

Knowles didn't specifically name any Buckeye cornerbacks that are dealing with injuries. But second-year defensive back Jordan Hancock, projected to be among the top three corners on the depth chart (along with Denzel Burke and Cameron Brown) this season, was seen limping off the field with an apparent leg injury after Monday's practice.

When asked Tuesday about Hancock’s prognosis, Knowles said "that's above my paygrade."

BROWN, JOHNSON SPLIT FIRST-TEAM REPS AT CORNERBACK
Two days after Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles expressed concerns about the Buckeyes’ cornerback depth, we got a glimpse at why on Thursday.

Ohio State had only four scholarship cornerbacks on the field during team drills Thursday as sophomore Jordan Hancock did not practice at all due to his injury while freshman Ryan Turner was a limited participant. Redshirt freshman safety Jantzen Dunn, who has been cross-training at cornerback during camp, also did not participate in any full-speed drills on Thursday. Fifth-year senior Cameron Brown did not participate in the 7-on-7 portion of practice, though he was on the field during 11-on-11 work.

As for Hancock, Turner and Dunn, Day said he does not expect any of the cornerbacks’ injuries to be long-term injuries, though he acknowledged that cornerback depth is one of his biggest concerns right now.

CB JORDAN HANCOCK
Ever since Cameron Brown opted to return to Ohio State for a fifth season in December, the Buckeyes’ starting cornerback pairing for 2022 appeared to be set. With Brown back and breakout 2021 defensive star Denzel Burke just a sophomore, new cornerbacks coach Tim Walton inherited a rock-solid duo at the top of the depth chart. But given Brown’s injury history over the past two years, the importance of a game-ready third option can’t be overstated, and that’s what Jordan Hanock figures to give Ohio State in 2022.

The top-100 2021 prospect suffered a mid-camp setback with a leg injury in August, but received rave reviews all spring as he positioned himself among the three best corners on the roster. Even without an injury to Burke or Brown, Hancock will still see plenty of time in 2022.

Day also offered an update on second-year cornerback Jordan Hancock, who was unavailable against the Red Wolves on Saturday. He said the Buckeyes are hopeful that he’ll be good to go this week.
"We would love to have Jordan back," defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said on Tuesday. He added that Hancock's presence would add much-needed depth to the Ohio State secondary with only six scholarship cornerbacks.

Some Hancock hype:

Rather, OSU’s coaches know something — someone, rather — is missing. They came out of the spring convinced that second-year-cornerback Jordan Hancock could make a significant second-year jump. Instead, the first half of the season passed without him taking a single snap due to a preseason leg injury.
Other preseason injuries, such as those to running back Evan Pryor and linebacker Mitchell Melton, limited OSU’s depth. Hancock’s changed what the defense looks like for much of the game. “We were hoping going into the season he’d be battling for a .....

Our Defense has been playing lights out this year. But with injuries, seeing Jordan get playing time against Iowa brings me hope as we enter into the last stretch of the season. He looked healthy, played with fluidity and provides much needed depth in the Defensive backfield.

Getting Jordan back is a huge boost heading into the second half of the season. JK and Jordan both look like the prized CB recruits they were in HS, albeit that they face much stiffer tests moving forward. But they look every bit of the part and I am glad Jordan is getting quality PT...hate to say it but with the struggles of Brown and Burke (Burke was better this week, but still), I could see us having JK/Hancock/J. Brown come in and supplant them if the struggles continue against better opponents. I think Burke will still find his way with the talent and instinct he has, but I see Cameron Brown's spot being wide open for JK and/or Hancock to take if there is not marked improvement. I hope C. Brown finishes strong and proves the doubters wrong, but having Hancock and JK get healthy and get real PT is just going to help the defense no matter what.

JK has been at least on Cam's level, and should only trend upward as he gets comfortable.
Jordan's been a highly regarded guy in practice, and it will be exciting to see how that progresses.
If those two can be solid to good CBs, that also pushes and frees up Burke to not be the entire hope at the corner position. He can be one of a strong top 3, instead of being hyped because he's the first decent CB they've had in a few years.

At this point in the season I consider JJ a starter opposite of Burke. Not saying the coaches agree but the proof is in the pudding. If Brown returns at peak level then we will even be in a better position.

OHIO STATE CORNERBACKS DENZEL BURKE, JORDAN HANCOCK FEELING HEALTHY AND CONFIDENT AFTER BATTLING INJURIES EARLIER IN SEASON

As for Hancock, he missed the entire first half of the season after suffering a hamstring injury in preseason camp. While Day previously described Hancock’s injury as “significant,” Hancock – who also held his first interview session of the year Wednesday – described the injury as “a little pull” and said he wanted to come back sooner but that Ohio State wanted to be cautious not to rush him back.

“I've always felt good, but it's more like, we want to keep it safe,” Hancock said. “It was a long process. Just want to thank the strength staff, the training staff, for really believing in me and getting me back on the field.”

Hancock has come off the bench in his first two games back, playing 15 snaps against Iowa and 31 snaps against Penn State. The Buckeyes have been bringing back slowly by design. Still, both Day and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles have said they expected Hancock to play a substantial role this season before his injury, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see Hancock in the starting lineup and see another increase in snaps this week.

“I haven't been a baseball coach, but it is like a pitcher. That's why they call it a pitch count, I guess because a guy can taper off as the game goes on if he hasn't built up that stamina,” Knowles said. “So we're gradually increasing him and looking for more reps from him this week.”

Hancock gave up two catches for 43 yards against Penn State, including a 35-yard catch-and-run by Penn State’s KeAndre Lambert-Smith after Hancock misread a play and left Lambert-Smith wide open, but he’s been otherwise sound in coverage in limited action.
