CB Jordan Hancock (Official Thread)

Another piece of that help has arrived on campus. Four-star cornerback Jordan Hancock, a top-50 player nationally, made his way to Columbus from Georgia this week to officially begin his collegiate career with the Buckeyes. He now immediately enters the mix at cornerback to help the Buckeyes round back into the Best In America form they are used to.

Hancock and fellow freshman star cornerback JK Johnson are now both in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to begin working toward a role early in their college careers. Neither enrolled early. But they’ll have a chance to make a claim for playing time this fall alongside cornerbacks Sevyn Banks, Cameron Brown, Ryan Watts, Lejond Cavazos and others.

Early vibe I'm getting is Jordan may start on outside and Cam Brown playing the slot. They like Cam's physicality the most inside and gives them more versatility from a run game/blitz perspective.

All speculation of course.

I think we are going to see a lot of:

Burke
Hancock
Cam Brown
Tanner McCalister
Ronnie Hickman
Kourt Williams

I actually think Cam Martinez may be groomed for the Tanner McCalister role based on his athleticism and fluidity. I think they like Hancock as a pure corner and they like Martinez in more of a hybrid role.

I could 100% be wrong. I'm speculating based on some things I've heard.

You could be right…but I’m a huge JK fan. I think he’s going to end up being the best of the three, even Burke. And we all know Burke is really good! Buckeye probz!

Obviously both are talented, but if just one of JK or Hancock turns the corner (no pun intended) this year, I am pretty confident our secondary will be great. Burke is going to be a top 10 Draft pick and we have too much talent at safety (McCallister, Hickman, Proctor, Ransom, K Williams, Martinez) to not be solid there.

I know JK was ranked higher, but I think Jordan could turn into our best CB.

I think JK is a little more technical, faster, and is a very good CB, but I agree. I think Jordan has the higher ceiling. I loved his junior tape. My post from page 1.

Jordan probably has my favorite film of the CB’s OSU is recruiting this cycle. A lot like Shaun Wade in that he could play outside, slot, or safety at a very high level.

Would love to see him in the class.

THE JORDAN HANCOCK GAME. There were not as many obvious storylines from this spring game as in recent years, probably because Ohio State showed pretty much nothing from the new-look defense it's been installing this spring.

But one player absolutely worth talking about who might not make all that many headlines was Jordan Hancock, who looked extremely ready to play football.

Knowles seemed to have his defensive backs playing more aggressively, however. After a couple of years of seeing cornerbacks playing in off coverage, Knowles had this group playing more in the face of receivers. That might account for a large chunk of the receptions Saturday going to tight ends and running backs.

...

“We’re continuing to work on playing close to people, throwing punches, being aggressive with our coverage,” Knowles said. “That may be a little bit of a change for them. We’re also going against the best receiver corps in the country. That’s going to continue to be a reason for them to get better. We’re going to continue coaching aggressive coverage.”

One defensive back who seemed to take that style to heart is second-year corner Jordan Hancock. Hancock had back-to-back plays in the first half that might have been the best sequence for anyone in the game. He aggressively broke out of a zone drop on a pass over the middle to Harrison and knocked the ball out of the air before it reached the receiver’s hands. On the next play, Hancock came flying up the field to tackle running back Miyan Williams in the backfield for a loss after a checkdown throw to Williams in the flat.

Jordan Hancock played physical

After being accused of "playing soft" against scUM last year; everybody need to get more physical.

As much as the positive talk of Hancock, he needs to work on playing a little more under control. There were a number of plays that would have been PI calls in real games. But he has a great game for man coverage, and will only get better with reps.
