CB Eli Apple (All B1G, National Champion, Los Angeles Chargers)

I agree just sadly 40 times somehow matter more

Meh, on NFL Network for Combine hype purposes 40 times are big, otherwise for most scouts they do not.

Scouts are looking more to see that film speed is matching up with what they see in person, you're just keeping an eye out for the red flag times...that CB that runs a 4.7 40 that makes you review the tape again. With an increasing amount of time spent in dime packages those 4.3 CB's don't serve as great a purpose. I'd expect Eli to be around 4.55 but as someone mentioned earlier he has the length that makes up for speed. Bigger DB's = not as many 4.3 40's and that's okay.

I didn't say he was Sherman, the point that was being made was that Apple has length to make up for his lack of top end speed and Sherman was an example of that type of player.

Richard Sherman was also selected in the 5th round.
So it doesn't really do anything to counter the point that, while Apple could have a very successful NFL career, he may not be a high draft pick.

CHRISTMAS SKULL SESSION: IRISH SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES, APPLE'S SURNAME CHANGE, AND OKLAHOMA AS 'THIS YEAR'S OHIO STATE'

APPLE TALKS SURNAME CHANGE. Eli Apple committed to Ohio State as Eli Woodard, but soon thereafter switched his surname.

We've knew Apple did it to honor the stepfather who raised him, but I don't recall a time Apple opened up this candidly about it.

From espn.com:

I don't remember my biological father, but my stepdad, he's been my real dad ever since I can remember. I didn't even know he wasn't my real dad until I got into middle school, and people were like, 'He looks different than you.' I'd never even thought about it. He's always been there, he's always taken care of me.

He's the one who really loved football. He used to wake me up in the middle of the night to go do drills. He's the main reason why I love football. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't be playing. I wanted to like everything he liked.

[...]

You always play for your last name, and that's something I want people to see when they look at me, see my jersey, see that 'Apple.' I want them to think, 'He's going hard for his parents, going hard for his family, trying to protect his last name.' It's something I just wanted to carry on.

I suspect the Fiesta Bowl will be Apple's last game in the Scarlet and Gray. Some will disagree with the decision, but they'll fail to see the value of a 6'2" corner like Apple in the NFL.

And then there were 6; with possibly 2 more "domino's yet to fall" (i.e. Bell and Thomas).

These guys brought in the ultimate prize (i.e. National Championship) last year. We wish them all the best.

:oh:....:io:
Just as important as the ultimate prize was the stigma that they erased. Best of luck in the pros to them all.

Good speed, good size, great character and a lot of intangibles to be an asset on an NFL roster. Eli followed in the recent line of OSU shut down CBs after Roby and Grant. Had his bumps, like it was expected and worked to become a kid that could close off a side of the field. Wondering who's the next man to take the torch at CB for 2016... But it was great while you were here Eli to help with the NCXTRA-OSU14VT-EQ-14.jpg
