CB Denzel Burke (All B1G, All-American)

BROWN, JOHNSON SPLIT FIRST-TEAM REPS AT CORNERBACK
Two days after Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles expressed concerns about the Buckeyes’ cornerback depth, we got a glimpse at why on Thursday.

When Brown wasn’t on the field, redshirt freshman JK Johnson took first-team reps opposite No. 1 cornerback Denzel Burke.

  • Both Harrison and Egbuka pulled down impressive receptions that inspired excitement on the practice field during mini-field drills. Matched up one-on-one with Denzel Burke, Harrison raked in a pass from Stroud despite Ohio State’s star cornerback being draped all over him on the right side of the field.

“I would just say I'm a lot more confident. Got my feet under me, got a year under me,” Burke said during a post-practice interview session Tuesday. “My job is just to be specific with my details in the game and just take care of the little things out there. And then everything will take care of itself. … I just feel like, in terms of me, I'm good. I just feel like this team is just way different than last year, and it's gonna be really special this year.”

Burke was somewhat reluctant to speak in detail about his own progress or personal goals for 2022. Instead, the second-year defensive back preferred to discuss the strides taken by the Buckeye defense as a whole amid an expansive coaching regime change over the offseason.

After suffering two regular-season defeats last season, Burke said “our bond together is stronger” in 2022 and that “we really love each other.” Burke said even the offseason training was more difficult under Jim Knowles and company as the whole defense tries to make a dramatic turnaround from one season to the next.

“OH, (IT’S) A BIG CHANGE. AND YOU WILL SEE IT ON SEPTEMBER 3RD.”– DENZEL BURKE ON THE BUCKEYES' DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS

“Honestly, I just feel like all of the offseason training we did – I've only been here for a year – this summer was way harder than last year,” Burke said. “And I feel like those workouts they put us through, all the events we went to, it really brought us together and we went through a lot of shared pain last year. So, got a lot of revenge coming.

“Just a lot more group workouts, a lot more stations, we had a lot more team runs, mat drills. You name it, everything.”

RYAN DAY, JIM KNOWLES CONFIDENT DENZEL BURKE WILL BOUNCE BACK AFTER SHAKY START TO SEASON

133024_h.jpg

Denzel Burke entered the 2022 season with as much hype as any Ohio State defender after he started every game as a true freshman in 2021 and earned Freshman All-American honors. Two games into his sophomore year, Burke’s performance hasn’t yet lived up to the expectations.

After limiting opponents to 344 yards on 64 targets in 13 games in 2021, Burke has already allowed 151 yards on 12 targets in the Buckeyes’ first two games of 2022, according to Pro Football Focus. Most noticeably, Burke gave up a 58-yard catch in game two against Arkansas State wide receiver Champ Flemings – longer than any catch he allowed as a freshman – when he got beat deep by Flemings and then proceeded to miss a tackle on Flemings after the catch.

Following that catch, which came after Burke had already been flagged twice for defensive pass interference, Burke was benched on the next defensive series for the remainder of the first half. It was the second time in two weeks that Ohio State pulled one of its starting defensive backs from the lineup after giving up a big play, as it did the same with Josh Proctor after he gave up a 51-yard catch to Lorenzo Styles on the first play from scrimmage against Notre Dame.

Burke eventually returned to the lineup for the start of the second half, though, and Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles was pleased with the way Burke responded after returning to the game. And he’s confident Burke will return to form going forward.

“Denzel is fine,” Knowles said Tuesday. “Those guys at corner, they live on an island. It's something that you know, 99.99% of the population could never do. It's a really tough, competitive situation. Sometimes you get into a little bit of a slump. You come out, reassess; he went back in and did better. So I think he's on track.

“When you're in such a high-pressure position, you're going to have some ups and downs. And it's really natural. And he's got a great attitude. And we trust him.”

Good for the rest of team to see that no player is above reproach.

I think also it’s important that they can see the difference when a player simply loses a high-level matchup.

for instance, if that’s a highly contested 50-50 ball and Burke just simply lost a hard fight for a ball and a receiver makes just a tip of the cap play, I doubt he gets sat. But to more or less tell him go sit for a bit and think about what you’re doing when you see a “what the hell is he doing” play is good judgement and fosters accountability and is the difference between players being afraid of fucking up and players being sure they’re giving it all they have. M

i hope that makes sense; just saying I think that’s an underrated component of what we’ve seen thus far

That is a really good point and a good assessment. If you ever have played CB (I did my whole life when I played), it is such a damned hard position to play as Knowles points out...you are out there on your own and the slightest error can lead to a huge play. But taking him out was the right call, at a certain point he needs to think about what is going wrong because yeah, he has had a really bad start and often on plays that are not a 50/50 ball as you pointed out, he is just getting flat out toasted. I can't tell you why that is, but he has to play much better or we're in for some real trouble when we face a decent offense (which thankfully might not be for awhile, October 8th to be exact).

That being said, Burke did the job and then some all of last year as a true frosh in a dumpster fire of a defense, so I have a hard time believing he won't turn it around and soon. I said it in the game thread on Saturday, but I am fingers crossed this is a very abbreviated sophomore slump. Talent, instincts and work ethic is very much there, something has just been amiss the first two games. I concur with Knowles, he is going to be fine.

Off season flattery can go to one's head. No one is "all that". Some time on the bench can be a really good thing. That's when heart shows the way.
Bingo!
We have a few players who let a lot of praise go to their heads in the off season and now it’s biting them at the beginning of the season. Those guys need to realize that once their name gets out there, they will get every opposing players best shot, so they can make a name for themselves. I hope these humbling moments by players who aren’t as talented, wakes these guys up, and makes them know that just showing up isn’t going to intimidate
