CB Denzel Burke (All B1G, All-American)

Feels like he is going through some of the same things that rattled Shawn Wade during his last season.

I think it’s more that he was reading his press clippings. Just go back to page 9 of this thread and go forward and see how much praise was thrown at him at such a young age. He was being compared to lottery pick, Sauce Gardner as a true frosh, hard for that not to go to a young kids head. He was training with NFL CBs in the off season as well, and I’m sure they were hyping him up. Then once the season starts, the opposing WRs want to light him up and make a name for themselves. That’s what happens when you’re considered a shutdown CB, you need to prove it every week. The best ones rarely get thrown at, and when they do, they allow few passes. But the ones not yet ready for prime time, once a WR has some success, the QB will keep attacking them. Burke is dealing with the latter right now. And will until he can show opposing offenses that they can’t complete passes against him

I really think the long TD pass surprised him. He was covering the guy when the QB took off and was out on the edge and could have easily ran for a big gain and he lost concentration for only that one second and that's all it took. Then "shit, he threw that?!?" and he's scrambling to knock it down and failed. Made him really look like a great cover guy, Shawn Wade, getting beat for jump balls. Ugh

I do wonder how much of it is going from a D that almost exclusively played man to being multiple. I remember comments from the NFL during our great 1st round db run that a lot of the guys were great in man and had trouble in zone

That's the difficulty with facing a dual threat QB. Once he scrambles, the DB is in a messed up situation. Do you go after the QB in space, or stay on your man, because you choose wrong and its a massive L for the DB. The next 4 weeks will be interesting to watch, as that will be 4 straight pocket passers.
What also isn't be thought of, is that OCs now have a year of film on Burke. The 2nd year for someone who was also starting the year before is always much more difficult, because that player can no longer sneak up on the competition. Same thing happens with rookies who become stars in the league, the 2nd year is much more difficult because the opposing coaches now can scheme towards the weaknesses of that player.
