CB Denzel Burke (All B1G, All-American, National Champion)

Denzel Burke Talks Pre and Post-Oregon Defense, Players-only Meeting, and Knowles/LJ Friction

Definitely worth the full half hour listen. Some quick hits (maybe not in order):
  • On the players-only meeting:
    • Some players lashed out at Day and surprised Burke - "I was like, Oh, snap, this is how we comin'?"
    • Came out of meeting with plan to keep playmakers on the field and let them make plays - "all the dogs were on the field, no matter what."
    • Attitude from Day changed, as he wasn't going to let anyone detract from the process and mindset they all agreed to; held everyone accountable to a degree that wasn't seen before that loss to UM
  • On before and after the first Oregon game:
    • Calls were simplified after the loss; players weren't on the same page in October
    • Even running zero pressures, they weren't able to get pressure on Gabriel
  • On Knowles/LJ Friction
    • Burke wouldn't name names, but said the defensive meeting room would get uncomfortable, and only one coach was willing to stand up to Knowles
This is the most candid interview on these topics I've seen.

“THAT’S REALLY WHAT I WANTED.” When Denzel Burke returned for his fourth season at Ohio State, he wanted to help the Buckeyes win a national title. In an appearance on the Bleav in Buckeyes podcast with Bryant Browning and Chimdi Chekwa, Burke said he is thankful to have accomplished that feat before leaving Columbus for the NFL.

“I ain’t have no hardware. I ain’t have nothing,” Burke said of his decision to come back for another year. “I definitely had that chance to take the next step in my life and go to the NFL and prepare myself for the draft. But for me, man, it was more than that. I wanted to create a legacy, especially for my family, especially for my son. When he grows up, I want him to be able to see, like, ‘Yeah, son, I got a natty. I got (a ring) on my finger. Me and my brothers made a decision to come back and put all the chips in.’ That’s really what I wanted in my heart. There was a lot of prayer involved.

“I knew I would be a high draft pick, but at the end of the day, it’s cool. I wanted to continue to develop into an elite corner, and that’s what I did. I felt like I matured a lot. Everything happened how I needed it to happen. We left out natty champs. That’s what we wanted to do, and that’s what we did. All the guys, we were texting each other (last January) and everyone wanted to leave and do their things, but we wanted to do this for our coach and for the state of Ohio, man, and for the guys before us, too, especially by beating ‘The Team Up North’ – that’s tough – but we ended up being natty champs.”

When asked to share what Day means to him, Burke smiled.

“Coach Day means a lot to me, man,” Burke said. “We’ve had a lot of vulnerable conversations. We’ve had a lot of one-on-ones. He’s a player's coach. I feel like I saw a different side of him this year. I wanted to be able to – we wanted to be able to get some hardware for him, too, because all the stuff he’s been through, you know, these fans, man, they crazy. … We love him, man. I love him. He recruited me and gave me my first offer. He came out all the way to Arizona to give me an offer, so it goes all the way back to then, man. It took us four years, but we got the job done. We got a ring now. Now, we’re legends forever.”

Legends never die.

Just sayin':

Ohio State Buckeyes Star Unveils Fallout of Brutal Michigan Loss

An Ohio State Buckeyes star spoke out about what happened after losing to Michigan.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are national champions, but that journey did not come without drama.

After losing to the Michigan Wolverines in the final game of the regular season, everything looked like it was falling apart. Fans lost it and started talking badly about the team and calling for Ryan Day to be fired.

Many expected that losing to Michigan once again would cause the team to fall apart. For many teams, that could very well have happened. That wasn't the case with Ohio State.

Denzel Burke, the Buckeyes' star cornerback, spoke out about some of the fallout from the loss to the Wolverines.

“Everyone started lashing out, opinions left and right,” Burke said. “Dudes calling out coach Day, like some stuff I ain’t never seen before.”

Obviously, it was a tense situation. Players did not hold back their thoughts and feeling, which was exactly what Ohio State needed.

Burke revealed that it was the best thing that could have happened for the Buckeyes.

He continued forward, explaining one of the main issues that players had with the way things were going prior to and including that loss.

“We were running plays we’re not really efficient in,” he said. “It was bad, man, both on the field and coaching. We’re always going to have better guys (than the opponent). But our main thing was just to run plays that we’re efficient at.”

Even though the loss is still painful for Ohio State fans, it needed to happen. Without losing to Michigan, it is very likely that the team would not have gone on to win the national championship.

Sometimes, bad things must happen to create a greater good. It sure sounds like that situation was present for the Buckeyes.

Just sayin': Interesting comment(s)
