CB Denzel Burke (All B1G, All-American)

I have a theory that his struggles actually began last year vs. ttun and utah

i completely agree. I specifically remember thinking to myself against Utah: “the fuck is happening to this kid?”

i get it’s 5 games in but at what point do you do what’s best for the defense? Do you stick it out and watch him continue to get abused or do you rip it off and roll with Brown immediately to get his reps in hopes he’s capable against actual passing offenses?

i have to be honest, I have significant concern about him being on the field against Maryland or the other dipshits who start with an M. Maybe he doesn’t feel like himself with the hand, but he’s going to get exploiting on a way larger and more costly scale if something isn’t done quickly.

At this point, sit him and roll with young guys like Brown and Johnson, and use Burke in garbage time to build up some confidence with positive plays. It sounds good on paper, and in reality it may mess with him mentally , but there are few options other than benching him at this point. This team is built to win an NC, but we need strong CBs as the season progresses.

it's mental... girl issues? family? grades?... distracting him... he's not focused... maybe he's hiding an injury...but he ain't the Burke of last year at this time

I was coming in to say it seems like a focus issue and he isn't playing with confidence. I was also thinking maybe there is something going on off the field that is distracting him. Whatever it is, I really hope he gets it together asap because we really need him at CB...some of the young pups have looked good but we haven't really played a good offense yet and I don't know that they are ready for the big stage (maybe/hopefully they are). In other words, we are stuck with relying on Burke imo and doing whatever it takes to get him back to 2021 form.

He's been right there every single time. IMO it's just technique and confidence.

He's not turning for the ball. If he could just turn a bit sooner and pick one off it could kick start his year.

I heard it pointed out today, this year there's not as much zone like last year. So perhaps last year this was masked a bit?

This reminds me of Chimdi Chekwa; dude was on everyone like glue but never played the ball or turned to look.

He could benefit from Coombs technique that made people mad. Play the hands don't turn around. When you get that down then worry about turning around and picking it

That TD vs Rutgers for example... he actually turned late but didn't locate the ball. So I'm sure it's something that they're working on.

Anyways he'll get it worked out.

This is exactly it. Two different coaching styles. Every time he’s given up a big play this year it’s when he’s trying to find the ball. Last year, he wasn’t playing press as much and was breaking on the ball more, whereas this year, he’s running in the hip pocket of the WR and is trying to learn to turn his head. He will get there. But right now, it just looks so awkward for him. He’s trying.

Yep he's trying and honestly he's gotten better. He was so close to turning in time vs Rutgers.

Just needs the reps and it'll serve the defense well if he can get everything right. Even regardless we are still only giving up 14 per game so it's not like it's costing us.

Let him figure it out though because if he can get right this defense can be special with Burke/Brown/Hancock/Johnson at corner.

OHIO STATE CORNERBACKS DENZEL BURKE, JORDAN HANCOCK FEELING HEALTHY AND CONFIDENT AFTER BATTLING INJURIES EARLIER IN SEASON

After dealing with injuries earlier this year, Ohio State sophomore cornerbacks Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock are both feeling healthy and confident entering the final month of the regular season.

Burke has already dealt with multiple injury setbacks this year. Going into the season, Burke suffered a shoulder injury in preseason camp. While that injury didn’t force him to miss any games, it did limit his practice reps for several weeks, which caught up to him on Saturdays as he did not play up to his usual standard early in the season.

The second-year cornerback was forced to miss Ohio State’s fourth game of the season against Wisconsin after he suffered a painful hand injury that required surgery – though he still made an effort to play against the Badgers just three days later.

“It happened, just hitting the ball out. Next thing you know, my whole joint came off the bone,” Burke said. “I got surgery on, I think it was that Wednesday. I had extreme pain gameday. I just couldn't do it. I tried to. I put the club on and went out there. It was just hurting too bad.”

In the first four games he was able to play this year, Burke gave up 10 catches for 231 yards – including a catch of at least 26 yards in all of those games – and two touchdowns on 17 targets, according to Pro Football Focus. In his first interview session since the season began, Burke acknowledged he was not satisfied with his performance in those games.

“Obviously, the start of the season wasn't what I expected or wanted either,” Burke said Wednesday. “But I'm not really worried about the past. I'm really just worried about going forward, stacking games and just winning games, game by game, and just doing what I can to the best of my ability for this team.”
