PLAY FOR PAY?: Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa (5) knocks a ball away from Denard Robinson of Michigan. Chekwa is checking his NFL draft status and sounds as though he's ready to make the jump.. (Chris Russell, Dispatch)
Chimdi Chekwa gives himself high marks for his Ohio State career so far. Now he's waiting to see whether the NFL sees him the same way.
The cornerback is one of 10 OSU juniors who have requested opinions from the NFL advisory committee. It has become a common procedure in recent years for just about every junior starter.
Some aren't really thinking of leaving, they just want a professional opinion on their strengths and weaknesses in order to know where they need improvement.
But some are seriously considering entering the draft pool. Chekwa certainly sounds as if he's in that camp.
He was asked recently: If your last game at OSU is the Rose Bowl (on Friday), do you feel you have accomplished some things?
"I think I did," he said. "My years at Ohio State have been pretty good. I think I've progressed as a person and on the field. I did a pretty good job so far."
His positive assessment could be a point of debate. Though he has had a solid career on balance, he also suffered a few poor games down the stretch this season.
Chekwa burst onto the scene in 2007, when he emerged as a solid nickel cornerback alongside Malcolm Jenkins and Donald Washington.
In 2008, he grabbed a starting spot, in part because of his play and also because Washington started the season with a two-game suspension.
With Jenkins and Washington gone this season, Chekwa stepped into the role of shutdown corner. He played well for much of the year, running stride-for-stride with receivers and showing an ability to turn his head and locate the ball in the air.
In the final two games, though, there were letdowns. Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg repeatedly found receiver Marvin McNutt with Chekwa in coverage, including on a tying 10-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
"McNutt was a real good receiver," Chekwa said. "I wasn't in a bad position on those plays, but he went up and made plays. Some nights, you just forget about it and continue to play."
