CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)
Haven't rewatched the game at all, but it seemed like Iowa went after Chimdi. Not sure if this was just the happenstance of the matchups, or what.... anyone else feel this way?
I just got back this morning to watch it on tv. Iowa definitely game planned attacking Chekwa. No doubt about it. Let's just say that he definitely seemed to be having some technique issues which they must have seen on tape.

Agreed - was caught with his back to the ball more than a couple times, and more than just the TD. He was right there on the receiver several times where he never turned to the ball.

On the deep pass (which lead to a missed fg) Chimdi stumbled a bit. They must have also seen that he plays soft coverage. They played him back and forth on that. The slant was easy as Chimdi didn't hit McNutt at the line. Then at the other end he was expecting the slant and they threw the fade. It is always hard to be a CB because your game can come down to 3-4 plays and if those don't go right... you have a bad night. He has been so consistent and I haven't rewatched yet but I feel the PI was a bad call and he and Rolle got excited on that int chance. One game, we won he'll shake it off and play great again.

He's done the same thing all year. Every single pass attempt, he's in the other guys jersey (literally...that's why he gets so many PI's). He has the coverage, but never turns around.

Drives me nuts.

As others have pointed out, coverage is not the issue. His body position just puts him in terrible shape to make a play on the ball in air...when he gets in the receivers hip, he needs to be able to turn his hips and look for the ball. Simply coming up through the receivers hands won't work if the receiver has strong hands, which prevailed against Chekwa yesterdat. Not that this is easy...playing corner in high school this was my least favorite type of pass to defend because the receiver has the advantage. It's tough to adjust your body, make the leap, and locate the ball to bat it away. He just needs more practice adjusting his body when the ball is in air.

Does a game like this lower his draft status at all? I mean probably not but one can only (selfishly) hope he decides to come back and learn a little more?
I doubt if it matters. I've seen more than one Ohio State DB have rough games in their junior season, and still leave early.

i thought it was related to the field/boundary, not picking on one player. allowing a less experienced player to attack the boundary (short side of the field) reduces the area the game is played in. it also helps prevent the throw across the field, aka the long floater returned pick six... etc

I try to talk him out of it. His family is very established, so he's not hurting for money....he just wants to go. But I think with Malcolm struggling a little bit is giving him a reality check. I'm thinking it's 75/25 he'll be back next season.

OK, so I don't know the kid at all and can't say what he may be thinking about the NFL. But I watched the team walk in from St John on Saturday and was standing right across from Chimdi's family. Looked like mom and dad and maybe sister?? Anyway, he stopped when he saw them and walked over and hugged them. As I watched that I immediately thought to myself that the scene looked like "his senior day" moment and told my brother that based on that moment I'm guessing he's set to go pro.

Obviously just my guess here, but thought I'd share.
