CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)

OSU got another boost Saturday when the men kicked off the day with a first-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay, despite a troublesome first hand off. Anchor and football player Chimdi Chekwa edged out Illinois, crossing the line with a time of 40.63.

"We came out expecting to win," Chekwa said

In the final competition of the 100-meter, Chekwa stopped running midway with a strained quad. His hip flexor "popped twice," he said. Chekwa said the strain would not interfere with his football season, though.

Hopefully Chimdi is right about not interfering with football. our CB is severely lacking in experience, and we need him back there

Chekwa pulls up
Just two days after Tim May profiled the two football players running track this spring, one of them may have been injured Sunday while competing in the Big Ten championships.

My colleague Tom Reed, who was at the meet working on an unrelated story, called to say that cornerback Chimdi Chekwa appeared to suffer a hamstring pull in the finals of the 100-meter dash. Reed said Chekwa pulled up limping and wasn't even sure he finished the race (he did, given an official time of 14.11 seconds, a good 3-plus seconds slower than the rest of the field).

It may be nothing serious, and even if it's a significant injury, there still are a good 75 days or so until practice begins, and more than 100 until the season starts.

Still, it's worth noting, at least.

Men's Track: Chekwa out, 4x100 relay team scratched
Everdeen Mason
Issue date: 5/29/09

Watching the sprinters of the Ohio State men's track team train on a humid Tuesday afternoon, you wouldn't know the pain and suffering they've gone through to get to this point. They had an easy workout: four 200-meter sprints and then a brief cool down as they joked around with each other.

"The best thing we can do is rest," assistant coach Ed Beathea said. "Do a little to make us fresh."

The men started intense training last September and have competed through the winter and spring. Now 17 athletes are preparing for the NCAA Regional Championships in Louisville, Ky.

The much-anticipated men's 4x100-meter relay was scratched after football player Chimdi Chekwa's quadriceps strain at the Big Ten Championships.

"It's really difficult to replace Chimdi and be competitive," Beathea said. It was only after Chekwa and fellow football player Lamaar Thomas joined the 4x100 in May that the team could make the regional qualifying mark.

It's seldom you see a D1 football player be successful in the 4xsprint relays. Having two on the same regional-qualifier team once again puts the lie to the idea that Ohio State is not a super-fast football team, at least at the skill positions.

I hear the DTs in the SEC anchor their relay teams. Confirm or deny?

The top 20 Ohio State football players for 2009: No. 7, Chimdi Chekwa

OSU
Chimdi Chekwa

No. 7: Junior cornerback Chimdi Chekwa

He's fast, running for Ohio State's 400 meter relay team in the spring, though he was sidelined when the Buckeyes ran their 40 times a few months ago. And he can tackle. Cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson refers to Chekwa as a guy not afraid to take your head off on the field. That's a good start for a corner.

A year ago, the Buckeyes could put three corners on the field - Chekwa, Malcolm Jenkins and Donald Washington - that were as good as any group of three corners in the country. Jenkins was the first defensive back chosen in the NFL Draft, Washington the 23rd.

And now Chekwa is the one left to handle the load. I expect him to emerge as one of the best corners in the conference. While the second corner spot will be decided between Andre Amos, Devon Torrence and Travis Howard, the Buckeyes need Chekwa to be the obvious answer on the other side of the field.

I won't be surprised if he takes Jenkins' spot on the All-Big Ten first team at the end of the season.

Buckeyes' Chekwa feels no pressure vs. USC
September 9, 2009
Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

Ohio State is the team that can't win big games any more.

The Buckeyes are the team carrying the banner for a battered Big Ten Conference.

The Buckeyes are trying to rebound from three consecutive BCS bowl losses and a 35-3 setback against USC last September.

The Buckeyes have the more experienced quarterback (sophomore Terrelle Pryor) than USC (freshman Matt Barkley).

And the Buckeyes are playing at home, where their fans demand excellence.

So who has more pressure heading into Saturday's clash between No. 8 Ohio State and No. 3 USC in Columbus (ESPN, 8 p.m. ET)? Not the Buckeyes.

"As a human being, you never like anything bad being talked about you," Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa said Wednesday. "But we try not to focus on that stuff. We hear it, but there?s really no pressure on us.

"People don?t expect us to do well in these big games."

Ohio State finds itself as a home underdog Saturday night, an unfamiliar position for a team that is 39-4 at Ohio Stadium since 2003. You would think the sense of urgency for the Buckeyes would reach a fever pitch.

Instead, the lower expectations outside Columbus could work in Ohio State's favor Saturday.

"Recently, we've been expected not to do well in big games," Chekwa said. "I don?t know how other guys feel, but if somebody doesn?t expect you to win or a lot of people are doubting you, you go out there with nothing to lose."

Nice game from Chim...threw the ball his way twice and he was draped over the receiver.
He was not draped over the receiver.. he burned the reciever and cut him off making 2 excellent plays on the ball and showing his afterburners. Incredible display of speed and 2 damn good plays. Impressive..

Agreed. I was curious to how he would handle Williams, and he played outstanding. Hopefully he keeps his great play up.
