It's somewhat bitter sweet, but still brings a smile to your face when he says

- "Ohio State is DB - U. So I'm trying to get them (Cam & Eli) ready, that when I leave, they can take my place"...


Just awesome words. His leadership and mentor abilities will be just as critical this year as his play whistle to whistle. Selfless. It's very exciting to see what this defense could be. Yet sad that this is his last year in the S&G.

Ohio State football: Roby sets high bar for himself this season

Bradley Roby didn?t return for his junior season at Ohio State just to play another year of college football. He wants to leave his mark.

?I feel like I am getting ready for the best year I?ve ever had,? said the cornerback, who led the nation in pass breakups last year with 19, including two he intercepted. ?Every year you have to get better, so I feel like this year is going to be amazing and people are going to see a lot more plays from me and from our team.

?I?m so excited, so ready. We gave you all a commercial last year (with a 12-0 record). This next year is going to be the movie, so it?s going to be crazy.?

Roby has set a lofty personal goal, but one he doesn?t think can be attained unless the team ? the defense, especially, which must replace seven starters ? achieves big things.

?The Thorpe Award (which goes to the nation?s top defensive back), I feel like I should have been in the finals last year, but I can?t really control stuff like that,? Roby said. ?That?s definitely on my list. But I really want to be the defensive player (of the year), the Bednarik. I definitely want that one.

?But it starts with leadership. I have to show leadership to make our whole defense better, because you can?t be a Bednarik winner on a bad defense. ? I?m worried about everybody else first, and all my accolades that are out there are going to fall in place.?

Such a statement also shows that Roby is paying attention to the goals listed under his name on the wall in the cornerbacks? meeting room, put there by position coach Kerry Coombs.

?The No. 1 goal for him is to be a verbal force on the team, and that is what he is doing,? Coombs said. ?In the meeting room, first of all, he is teaching those young guys.?

All-American corner skipped draft to return and develop his leadership skills

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The process of self-evaluation started with his physical skills.

Those checked out just fine, certainly good enough to play on Sundays next fall.

Hardly anybody works harder on the mental side of the game, either, so Bradley Roby ticked off another box on his NFL-ready checklist.

Had he stopped there, the decision seemed pretty easy for an ESPN.com first-team All-America cornerback who was eligible to put his name in for the draft thanks to a redshirt season when he first arrived on campus at Ohio State. But the more Roby thought about it, the longer he waited to make his plans official, there were two things nagging at him as he debated leaving the Buckeyes.

And he could conceivably take care of both of them simultaneously by returning for one more run as a junior.

"The NFL isn't going anywhere," Roby said. "It did take me awhile. I wasn't really sure; I had to think about it a lot and go over it. Time to time I talked to 10,000 people about it, and I prayed about it. One day I had that feeling, I just had a feeling that I'm not ready yet.

"I'm physically ready on the field and mentally, but it's just not my time yet."

Roby knows the drill, cuts right to the chase. He's going to have to look a lot like Woodson to get some run.

"Coaches have to be in a place where they're comfortable putting you on the other side of the ball [offense]," he said.

"Clowney's a good player, but they're not going to give the Heisman to a D-end," he added. "You always run away from a defensive end. You always throw to a different side for a corner. As a quarterback, you're always the center of attention. You're always able to produce." Roby is coming off a season in which he led the nation in passes defended (19) playing for an undefeated team. One problem. If there is a designated Heisman candidate for the Buckeyes, it has to be quarterback Braxton Miller.

"I feel like the Heisman is the best player on the best team," Roby said. "If we all did good, they'd give it [to] Braxton before they'd give it to me. ... That's how those awards are. That's why I want to go after the defensive ones."

That would be the Thorpe Award, given to the nation's best defensive back. The only Big Ten player to win the Thorpe since 2000 was Ohio State's Malcolm Jenkins in 2008.

"Corner is probably the second-hardest position to play," Roby said. "It's the only position on the field where everybody sees your mistakes. ... This year I'm focusing on the picks. I want the picks. I want the ball. I want to change the game all the way around."

Had a thought today. What happens if we reach the NC game and fall just short or have a one loss season and don't play for it. If sometime thereafter Brax and Roby say they are coming back for their final year, would Roby stay? I'm always for a young man to move on to the league when the timing for him is best. I just wonder if the pull to win a NC will be strong enough for him to stay if no other underclassmen leave.

In no way do I see that happening. Roby's even said that he's considering this his final season, his senior year, so I don't think there's any way he doesn't leave.

To be honest I'm kind of surprised he didn't leave last year. I still think he would have ended up being a first round pick and maybe even the first CB taken. He's a top 10 lock in next year's draft IMO.

Say what? If he says he's going to stay, I'd imagine he'll stay.

However, he's said he is likely leaving after this year, and I don't blame him.
