First of all, nothing is finalized until Redd signs on that dotted line later this month. Second of all, I think we should wrap up Bobby Simmons right now (can shoot the three and plays pretty good defense plus we can get him cheap) and then throw the max at JJ and see what happens. We could do well with both because JJ can be a PG too and w/ simmons we'd at least have someone locked up.

I'm not giving him credit for anything... comes a point in time when one needs to ask.. just how much do I need... and what kind of a life do I want to lead...

He'll be with Milwaukee forever.. since no one will ever trade for him because of his contract... and Milwaukee will be mediocre...

He could have taken a shot at the big one...Guess he can always buy his own Championship ring.. because he won't win one with Milwaukee...
Gee I don't know - he needs as much as he can get. Just like you would do. You think he leads a bad life for taking more money? wow.

Tell me just why you believe Milwaukee will be mediocre? I hope you have some good reason beyond just sour grapes.

Interestingly, this popped up by Terry Pluto, lead writer for the Akron Beacon Journal today... same exact feelings as mine... BSH, you may be right... maybe I'd make the same choice if I were him... but in my mind, I wouldn't... I want memories in my life...

Time to pick the money or the wins

<!-- begin body-content --> DEAR MICHAEL REDD:

The Cavaliers are romancing you with videos, meetings and visions of what it would mean to play in your home state next to LeBron James.

You'll talk to Danny Ferry. You'll talk to Mike Brown. You might know both of these men already. You'll like them. Most people do. You'll like the idea of playing with James. You'll probably like owner Dan Gilbert, who is an excellent salesman, a passionate guy.

But you know the real deal. You averaged 23 points for the Milwaukee Bucks and set yourself up to become a free agent in order to have options.

Now, it's time to choose.

You're from Columbus; you played at Ohio State. If there is a real home court in the NBA, Gund Arena is it. Milwaukee can't match that, just as the Bucks have no one who compares with James.

If you're all about money, you'll go with the Bucks.

They will give you other reasons. They'll talk about the drafting of center Andrew Bogut. They'll talk about point guard T.J. Ford getting healthy. They might talk about Flip Saunders, whom they want to hire as coach. But in the end, they'll talk money.

According to NBA rules, the Bucks can offer you about $94 million over six years. The best the Cavaliers or any other team can offer is about $72 million over five years. They'll be quick to tell you that the difference is $22 million, and that's a lot of money.

Your agents are the Poston brothers, the same guys who represent the Browns' Kellen Winslow. They were the people who told the Cleveland media, ``This ain't about being friends, it's about getting paid.''

If it's only about getting paid, then you'll stay in Milwaukee and play for a team that might eventually creep into the playoffs, but won't become a real contender, barring a basketball miracle.

It's doubtful you'll get much encouragement from your agents to take less money. Rarely do agents suggest that, because agents receive about a 4 percent cut of the contract. If you take the Bucks' offer, it's worth nearly $900,000 more to your agents than what the Cavaliers can pay you.

Keep that in mind as you consider what they have to say. It's not just the Postons; it is in any agent's self-interest for their clients to grab the biggest offer.

I assume the Cavaliers are smart, and they'll probably have a presentation similar to one I received from Gary Hetrick, a CPA from Medina.

He looked at the Bucks' $94 million offer and the $72 million from the Cavaliers. He ran the numbers, worked the various tax considerations and other factors. He discovered that in terms of sheer dollars in your pocket -- the first five years of the contracts are nearly the same: Milwaukee will pay you about $1.7 million more over those five years.

According to Hetrick, your take-home pay in the first five years from the Cavaliers will be $37.5 million compared with $39.2 million from Milwaukee.

Either way, I think you'll get by.

The difference is that Milwaukee can offer a sixth year, the Cavaliers can't. That sixth year can be worth close to $20 million, about $11 million in your wallet after taxes.

Maybe the Cavaliers can offer you a chance to become a free agent after three years. Or maybe they can come up with another creative idea. But they can't match Milwaukee's offer.

In Milwaukee, they'll tell you that you'll always be The Man, the center of the offense. With the Cavaliers, that's James. Just as you'll get more money in Milwaukee, you'll get more shots. But the Bucks were 30-52 last season, and they'll be lucky to improve to 42-40 -- the Cavaliers' record last year without you.

Now you have to ask yourself, what really is the bottom line: the numbers on your contract or the victory total in the standings?

Good article. When your talking 70-90 MIL, I think you should look at the better chance to win. Then again I have never walked in Latrell Sprewell's shoes (sarcasm). I mean really, when you're talking about those kind of numbers, doesn't walking along with LBJ on your hometown team seem more attractive? Then again, I'll never have to ponder those kind of numbers...do whatever you feel is best for you Michael, either way I know you will do the Buckeyes proud. :oh: :io:

Good for Michael. I'm glad he got a big extension. As much as I wanted to see him come back home and play in Ohio, you gotta give him credit for sticking with the team that took a chance on him a few years back.
I went to west high with Redd and he was very goal oriented. This was his dream and I'm glad that he is one kid that made the American dream. His parents stuck by his side the whole time and last I heard they have a nice new house. I cut my grandparents grass once a week and have to pass their old house and every time I look and just think how nice it must be.

Hughes to Cleveland?

It looks like this is going to happen in the next day or two. While I love his defense and scoring ability, his long range shooting is suspect at best.

Hopefully they can get a pg that can shoot decent from the perimiter.

It has been confirmed!!! LARRY HUGHES TO CLEVELAND CAVALIERS! WKNR out of Cleveland first comfirmed the story and now Chad Ford of ESPN is saying Hughes' agent has confirmed that Hughes will sign with LeBron, ummm, I mean the Cavaliers.

At least this is something. Now we can move forward with other plans. While I would have prefered a SG that can actually shoot the ball, at least he can score by other means. Now it is time to sign Z and look at which PG we will get and then who will fill out the rest of the roster.

Well I just hope they didn't have to over pay for him. One way to look at this is Hughes can put points on the board and play D, which is better than Newble. The Cavs will have Pavlovic and Jackson on the bench who can drain 3's when they are in the game. If they can get a PG that can lead the break, drain open 3's, and play D they will be looking good at guard.

dark side: he can't shoot like Allen or Redd.

bright side: he's a much better defender than both of them. He's 26 and should only improve.

I'm not really a big fan of Z. He loses more balls in the middle than Elton John and his defense is weak. I would rather have Dalembert or Curry(if indeed healthy.)

Sure, we overpaid for Hughes, but we would have overpaid Redd and over-yeared Allen. Hughes can score, 'bound, steal and guard either 1 or 2.

I'm with Exhawg that Pavlovic and Jackson will improve the team shooting
this season.

mid range exception - the $5M one... how does that work? is it included in the cap room or in addition to it?

I'm assuming you're talking about the mid-level exception. Teams over the cap can use it once every year. There is also a million dollar exception that cap tight teams can use once every other year.

Apparently, the Cavs are after that Lithuaian pg to fill that spot. He's regarded by NBA scouts as the best European not playing in the league. He was pretty good in the World Championships last season. He shouldn't cost as much as some of the others but at least higher than the mid level exception. I I'm guessing that re-signing Z would help lure him to town.

I'm still a fan of Antonio Daniels.

So...both the Mid Level and $1M exception are over and beyond the cap...

The Lithuanian PG - would he fill either of these exception spots?

Daniels - does he slot in the mid level exception or would he be under the cap budget?

I wouldn't be surprised if Tarver (LBJs longtime friend/hoops mate) ends up on the Cavs roster at the minimum rate... keeps LBJ happy.. more money than Tarver would see in the real world... and he's not bad.. albeit not pro level talent... but he's not a bad college player...
