Cavs 09-10 Season (official thread)

This trade would have little to do with Orlando. First of all Gortat does not belong in this conversation. He's a turd. Z gets abused by Howard and Hickson is a non-factor - despite that sick block he got the other night. Actually, with an upgraded scoring threat in Stoudemire, it might serve to get Howard in foul trouble or off the court a little faster. You can't count on that though and don't make a trade like this based on that alone.

This move is more about Boston. Yes, Boston sucks right now, but they are a matchup nightmare for the Cavs - or at least they were at the beginning of the season. They will play each other a couple times coming up soon, so maybe that's changed a little, but adding Stoudemire and Powe would give the Cavs a stronger frontcourt to take on Garnett, Wallace & Perkins.

The ability to get Z back is a key to this trade for me. He has some huge liabilities, but he also brings a few things to the table that the others do not.

im just saying i think the trade is strictly based around facing the lakers and ECF which will more then likely be orlando...i dont see powe being a big factor this year and if we can get him to play 10 minutes in the playoffs in situational defensive situations then i think this is a great get....bottom line wether its amare or jamison we are after i think its evident that ferry is ready to pull the trigger and he believes that our current squad may not be able to win it all unless we make a move...and with some of the contracts and peices we have now there is no better time to make a trade

I think there are a lot of factors that are going into making a move this year.
1.Ferry made be worried that we had the best record last year and did not make a move then got outed in the ECF and does not want to make that mistake again.( I think the Cavs are a much better and more complete this year than last year. I.e. 4-0 vs Lakers and Magic this year.)
2. The Cavs want to add more talent to the roster not just this year but to entice Lebron to resign and stay long term.
3. Cavs do not have any cap space to go out sign any free agents this coming summer so they are using the trade deadline as a chance to acquire talent.
4. Cavs have some uncertainty going forward because Shaq and Z are big questions marks as to whether they will be back or playing basketball at all next year.

All in all I am a big JJ supporter and I am not sure whether the Cavs really need to make a move to win the title this year. But, if they can find a way to use Wally or Z to acquire some talent for the future of the team I am all for it.( Yes, getting Z back in a buy out is quite important too.

One thing I will say is that this is not a "trust the coaches" decision. Over the years Cavs' management (and yes, I realize most of it is not Ferry) has failed in its decision-making time and time again. If you bring in Amare for JJ Hickson, one of two things had better be true:

1. You already know Lebron in leaving.

2. You sign Amare to keep him long term with Lebron.

Its difficult to argue that JJ is more equipped right now to help this team than Amare. So for this year, the deal makes sense. Long term, it could be a disaster.

Absolutely 100% you make this trade if all it takes is JJ. I think you all are way over thinking this one.
I will drive to your house and pop your tires.

Scuttle on the interwebs is potentially...

  • Cavs could be posturing for Murphy or Jamison
  • Amare's first choice is Miami (isn't new)
  • Not a done deal to re-sign if trade does happen
I am slowly coming around to the idea of Amare, simply because Danny seems bent on making a deal. I am concerned about salary, injury, and him opting for free agency and bolting for Miami this summer. If we do make this trade, we need him to re-sign.

Other than the actions of his predecessors, why should we distrust Ferry at this point?

He's also a fucking idiot. I get what you're trying to say, but JJ and Andy tore his team a new one the other night.

I think that's mainly because he wasn't covering them. He sold out to stop Shaq and Lebron and gave the 4's whatever they could get. If you have Lebron, Amare, and Shaq on the floor who do you help off of? The more I think about this trade the more I think it will help the Cavs now and in the future. Amare is also a sign and trade option if he wants to go someplace else next year.

Larry Hughes did suck. I don't blame Danny Ferry for that as much as I blame the player. I think it's easy to forget how bad the non-LeBron players sucked back then. For as bad as he was, he was still an upgrade. Take a look back at this roster from the year before Hughes was signed: 2004-05 Cleveland Cavaliers Roster and Statistics | Basketball-Reference.com

I think Ferry has a consistent record of incrementally upgrading the supporting cast on this team. Hughes sucked, but he was better than the guy that was in that spot before him. Plus, it's not like he was Ferry's first choice. Once guys like Redd and Ray Allen were out of the picture, he did what he had to do. And when the time came, he was the primary piece in the trade the brought in Delonte West, Joe Smith, Ben Wallace & Wally Szczerbiak.. West is still contributing. Smith was flipped for Mo Williams. Wallace was flipped for Shaq. Wally may yet be flipped for somebody this year.

In the grand scheme of things, the Larry Hughes signing was far from the worst move this franchise has seen.

At the time that was the best move that Ferry could make. Ray Allen and Redd turned him down. The only other option he might have had would be to get Joe Johnson from the Suns, but he didn't exactly have anyone worth trading. Hughes was the next best choice and he had to show Lebron that they would spend what it took to add players.
Ferry has been dead on with everything else after that summer. He was able to turn Gooden and Hughes into West, Wally, Big Ben, and Joe Smith. Amon Jones into Mo and then Ben and Pavs into Shaq.

I'm not happy with the trade. I don't think the Cavs need any trade. The team is awesome the way it is...BUT, it doesn't matter what I think. To me it only matters what one person thinks...LeBron James.

If Amare coming to Cleveland gets LeBron to stay, then do it. Do whatever LeBron wants. If LeBron doesn't want you to trade anybody, then don't. You do whatever it is you need to do to make sure LeBron signs with the Cavs next year. So whatever he wants. And I hear that both LeBron and Shaq really would like to play with Amare. And all indications are that Z would be waived and the Cavs would get him back in March. So if LeBron wants Amare over JJ Hickson...then do it. When it all comes down to it, the future of this team is all based on LeBron James...not JJ, not Z, not anybody else.

Brian Windhorst the cleveland plain dealer/cavs beat writer/cavs guru just posted this on his twitter which also makes alot of sense for the suns to make a deal with the cavs...might be a good website to be checking from here till thursday

https://twitter.com/PDcavsinsider

Major reason why the Cavs are a leading contender for Stoudemire: They can get Suns below tax, which would be worth around $10 million.
