Cavs 09-10 Season (official thread)

Usually I dismiss this LeBron-Knicks stuff out of hand, but this is probably worth keeping an eye on, from Windhorst:

it's really not worth looking at. the knicks have mortgaged their draft picks. they have no talent on that team to speak of. they can't afford to resign anyone that is close to decent on their current roster.

if lebron really wants his team to consist of himself, another superstar, and 10 stiffs, then he's dumber than anyone could have imagined. if winning is really that important to him, then the knicks are at the bottom of the pile.

Would the Knicks with Lebron and Bosh/Wade be any good? They would have to let the rest of their already crappy roster walk in order to pull that off. Lebron +1 would make them a playoff team, but they would be years away from being where the Cavs are right now. If Lebron truly wants to win above all the Knicks and Nets won't be an option for him.

If LeBron really wants to win, resign with the Cavs for well under his market value, freeing up cap space to add even more talent.

He certainly doesn't need the contract dollars with his endorsements, and making space for better surrounding talent would increase his chances at future titles and thus being more marketable/profitable after his playing days are over.

with the current guys cleveland has under contract and the future salary cap projections, lebron's total contract does nothing to help the cavs in the future.

Actually it would help a sh*t ton. Without Lebron, the Cavs only have about 34-35 million in salary to pay out next year.

9.3 - Mo
7.0 - Verajao
4.7 - West
4.0 - Gibson
3.0 - Moon
2.9 - Parker
1.5 - Hickson
1.0 - Jawad (qualifying offer)
0.9 - Powe (team option)
0.9 - Jackson

so, how exactly would it help?

first, danny green is not included, which is another $900k. That puts cleveland at roughly $51 million counting lebron's cap hold. That also gives Cleveland no center as you do not count shaq or Z. one of those two will be resigned, likely shaq. otherwise, cleveland has about $3 million to try and fill the center position.

so, unless you are asking lebron to take about a $5 million a year pay cut, getting him slightly under max value does nothing. their best bet is to use their bird's rights on shaq to resign him and use what they have lefto f the MLE to try and get a cheap young backup center.

Didn't Z say he wants to play another season? If they win it all this year I'd bring everyone back for one more go. Just keep signing Shaq and Z to 1 year deals until they can't get it done. Even then you will always have an expiring contract to deal if you need to pull the trigger. If the NBA gets a hard cap in a couple years all of this fun will go away. I'm a fan of the soft cap and Bird Rights. If the NBA wants to save money just lower the cap and the per year salary of max deals.

According to the CPD, Lebron currently makes:

$15.8 mil yr CAVS
$28.0 mil yr OTHER

If he drops to $11 mil next year, he still clears about $40, if not more with added endorsements (particularly with Tiger's freefall).

Seems like a no-brainer to me if I want to win and already have outrageous cash flow in the bank.

Good points. If you think LeBron makes a ton in endorsements now, see what happens if Cleveland happens to win an NBA title or two...

I don't think the Cavs would need Z to get out of the East. He's really more of a liability against the Celtics & Magic. He'd sure be useful in a Finals matchup against the Lakers though.

More than anything though, I want to see him retire in a Cavs uniform and get a ring.

Cavs talks with Wizards intensify - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

I'd do Z and Moon for Jamison, but my only question is would the Wizards cut Z? I would be worried about the depth at C if they lost Z for good.

it would cost the wizards about $3 million to not buy him out. that's a lot of coin for a pseudo rivalry that was mostly in the mind of stevenson, who is no longer with the team anyway.

I wouldn't be worried about the "rivalry". I'd be worried about the fact that Washington just traded away their starting center to Dallas and could probably use somebody just to get through the rest of the season.

You absolutely KNOW Phoenix would buy him out. Their owner has be vocal about cutting payroll - to the point that he's starting to make Donald Sterling sound like a free spender.
