Cavs 09-10 Season (official thread)

Even if he's a wash this year, he'll be a great pickup for 2010 and beyond.

He is also a GREAT sign & trade chip for next summer.

Listening to WKNR the other night and Brian Windhorst was talking. He mentioned that the Cavs have realized they won't have room under the cap to sign LeBron AND another star player. The Cavs shifted focus to the sign & trade possibilities next season. That is why you are seeing alot of 2 year deals.

But back to Powe, he is a great signing. No risk high reward type signing.

Joe Smith has agreed to a one-year deal with the Hawks, a source told ESPN's Ric Bucher. The veteran forward picked Atlanta over Cleveland, where he played last season.

Looking at playing time this is a good move for him. The only reason to sign with the Cavs would be to have a better chance to win a title. He would probably go games at a time without playing especially when Powe gets healthy. It would probably be better for JJ if the Cavs don't bring in another big right now.

Any tips on how LitlBuck can get his voice back after following this process for even a week during basketball season?

Yea, only watch Austin Carr doing the Cavs games and when you start to lose your voice, say "Get that weak stuff outta here" 10 times and you'll be fine.

Signed Rob Kurz to a non guaranteed contract. Windhorst says he is a good shooter and can play the 3 or 4.
not a done deal yet unless you have another link

With one signing stalled, Cleveland Cavaliers closing in on deal with draft pick Danny Green

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- So maybe the Cavaliers' roster isn't quite set just yet.
The team is looking forward to having jump-shooting specialist Rob Kurz in training camp, but the deal isn't finalized. However, it now does appear the Cavs have things about settled with second-round draft pick Danny Green.
When Joe Smith signed with the Atlanta Hawks last week, it appeared Kurz was set to grab a spot on the roster with a tentative agreement in place to come to training camp on a non-guaranteed contract.

But nothing with Kurz is official yet, agent Mark Bartelstein said Tuesday.
"There is a lot of mutual interest but we haven't formalized anything," Bartelstein said. "Rob was in Cleveland for a week and enjoyed working with the coaches. We're all waiting to see what happens."

The Cavs are hoping the 6-9 Kurz, who can play small forward as well as power forward, does end up in Independence next month. But there is still a possibility he could sign elsewhere, especially if another team guarantees him money.

According to a source, there are two other teams interested in Kurz. With potentially two roster spots available -- as well as a place in the rotation -- there is a good chance Kurz will end up in training camp in Cleveland.
However, the Cavs are close to signing Green, according to a league source. The most the team could offer is two years for $1.2 million, though not all of it may be guaranteed.

Troy Murphy

I will admit that I do not follow the Cavaliers as close as some of you and do not know the ins and outs when it comes to the contracts of different NBA players and how good some players are. However, I always read that Lebron and Z were pretty tight and Lebron enjoyed playing with Z. However, I have read a couple articles in the past few days where it has talked about the possibility of the Cavaliers trading Z to a team that was looking for a big expiring contract which leads me to this article regarding Troy Murphy. This sounds like it might be a pretty good fit for the Cavs that the deal could be pulled off.

Link

So how can the Cavs go about acquiring Murphy? It was hard enough to pry Williams away from a division rival a year ago, and it required a third team. If Ferry can't find a third team this time around, then he still has the massive expiring contract of Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who is still a serviceable player.
But Z is also five years older than Murphy and offers no young potential, something the Pacers would probably want for a guy like Murphy.

Although the Cavs are high on J.J. Hickson, they really can't afford to keep waiting around for him to develop with the stakes as high as they are. If including Hickson in a package with Z is what it would take to get Murphy to Cleveland, then the Cavs should -- by all means -- pull the trigger. Hickson isn't a guarantee at this point. Murphy, however, is. And he is also a much better fit for the Cavs right now than Hickson.

Plus, it's possible that Hickson's value could be higher right now than it will be at any point in his career if he goes downhill from here. The Cavs can either cash in on his value right now or keep waiting around for the future -- a future that may not include LeBron James if 2010 doesn't end with the Larry O'Brien trophy.

Murphy also doesn't guarantee the title, but he definitely stacks the odds in their favor. If last year's Cavs team won 66 games, then swapping Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and J.J. Hickson -- three of whom even didn't contribute much to begin with -- for Shaq and Murphy would definitely push 70 assuming good health.

It also moves Anderson Varejao back to the bench where he belongs. Now that Andy is getting paid and in the fold for the long haul, it will probably be easier for him to accept the role that he had to begin with. Plus, both Varejao and Murphy's abilities to play center as well as power forward would afford a much deeper bench and a more versatile frontcourt rotation -- one that would get even stronger once Powe comes back in the spring.

For the Pacers, getting Z would save them $11.9 million for next summer and get them under the new salary cap by about $7 million. It also gives them a young piece in Hickson to help begin a rebuilding project, another thing that a team treading water would be looking for in trading a star like Murphy.

Of course, it's all speculation at this point. But an expiring contract begins to accumulate more and more value the closer we get to the trading deadline. And if the Pacers are looking at another season of being 10 games under .500 (or making the playoffs as an eighth seed only to be dusted unceremoniously by one of the East's top dogs), then this trade begins to make more and more sense for both clubs.

So I guess my question is would the Cavaliers really trade Z. for anyone or is he too close to Lebron.
