Cavs 08-09 Season - Central Div Champs (official thread)

the only issue is that AV and wally's contract are the two best trading chips the cavs have. there is no way a team is going to take on wally's expiring deal without getting something good in return, whether it be AV or Boobie, or even Delonte West.

the Cavs are still dangerously thin in the frontcourt, and don't have a lot of scoring there.

I disagree about Andy being a big trading chip. He doesn't make a lot of money and this is the final year of his deal. Anyone who trades for him would want to resign him, but it will take even more money. Wally, Snow, and at least this years first rounder are are what they can use to trade. Gibson might be a piece someone would want, but I don't know if I would give him up. That would be like trading Lebron's little brother and probably piss him off.

Really Wally's contract plus a 1st rounder should get whatever we want. But the only way I can see AV being involved in the trade is if we are getting a bigtime PF/C type player. The only problem is I don't see anyone currently out there that would be worth it. (including AV in the deal)

They also have Eric Snow's contract along with Wally's that would give a team 20 mil in cap relief between the two. And if the Cavs added to that a first round pick that is a very attractive package for a team that is tanking. They don't always have to up something to get a good player or players in return. Just look back to last year when Memphis unloaded Gasol for practically nothing or when the Cavs got Mo for Joe Smith and Damon Jones. Sometimes GMs just do stupid things and make bad deals as well.

The player not talked about much in the Gasol trade is his brother, Marc. Have you seen what he's been doing in his first few NBA games? I believe he had a 25pt, 15reb game last night. It looks like Memphis got something out of it besides cap relief.

I think more than likely, there won't be any decent bigs available to get at the deadline. the best players available will all be wings. I just haven't heard any realistic bigs mentioned anywhere.

We have 7 games before we go to Detroit...We have 5 of them at home...

I would like to see us go 6-1 or 5-2...I would put us as the better team against all the teams other than maybe Utah and Denver, who I think that we are just as good as, but not for sure...But we have them at home...

As for the trade thing, I am not sure if we really need to push to mess with the team...I think that if we could get someone for Wally, Snow and say West/Andy/pick then I would pull for a 2 guard or a PF...

Obviously if we give up Andy it needs to be a PF but with Z, Big Ben, Andy, Hickson, and wright, as long as they stay healthy and Brown manages their minutes, I think our front court is plenty good for us to be able to win...We won't get a ton of scoring from the front court especially with Andy and Big Ben, but we will get good defense, reboudning, and Z can score...you can also throw in playing LBJ at PF when we go small, and throw in SF scoring to the front court and we are going to be fine...no reason to go searching here, unless someone of big significance is open, but then you tie up a bunch of money for a backup, as either who you bring in has big contract and you start them, or you move Ben to the bench and he has a big contract...

So I think you look in the backcourt...I would like to see a SG that can create and shot the ball...Michael Redd is the perfect type guy that you would look for, but we have hoped for awhile and it hasn't happened...

But with Boobie, Mo, West in the backcourt, you would need a SG that is bigger and could double as the SF when LBJ moved to PF...

Our backcourt is where we a

its so difficult right now to find a roster that has a legit #2 to LeBron. In the off-season, it seems all of the non-playoff teams made move sto become contenders, so they aren't going to willingly trade away their best player.

I remain convinced Cleveland cannot win a championship unless it gets LeBron a big-time #2. History emphatically states that, so unless you think LeBron is good enough to transcend this statistic, they need to make some type of move at the deadline if they want to make a push this year.

I think we can rule Michael Redd out at this point. Milwaukee has proven they want to become contenders, and have showed early on, they can make a push.

It will be really difficult to speculate on trade partners until teams start to suck, and know they need to unload big contracts and start over. I just don't see many teams that aren't already in rebuilding. I think they are going to be very few trade partners at the deadline...

After watching Monday night's game against Dallas again, I think the Cavs can stand pat. I may change my mind in the future, but I was impressed at how these guys are starting to play together. I hated West last year at the point,
but he seems to be a different player at the 2 guard.

Next year, JJ Hickson will be much better, another first round pick, Wally and Snow's contract money to get a star Big, why screw it up now?:)

If the Cavs manage to keep the TO's to a minimum in these games, third quarter ESPECIALLY, they should have no problem doing that... And possibly then some! Taking a look at the schedule I saw 5-2 in this upcoming stretch, both losses were close losses which could turn into wins.. Only time will tell.

If Mo Williams stays hot, which he's capable of doing, the Cavs will be scary good. Good play from our guards lead to VERY good things...

Guard relieved groove is back Williams' best play yet with Cavaliers comes in win over Mavericks
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Wednesday, Nov 05, 2008
Cavaliers point guard Mo Williams sounded relieved after Monday night's 100-81 victory against the Dallas Mavericks.
In his best display of the young season, he scored 14 points on 50 percent shooting and handed out six assists, after struggling in earlier losses against the Boston Celtics and New Orleans Hornets.
He seemed to take the loss to the Hornets especially hard because he missed several shots that could have provided a much-needed lift to the Cavs.
''You just got to get back into that groove, and tonight was a great sign,'' he said following the game in Dallas on Monday. ''I put in the extra work just to get back into that groove.''
''I had two surgeries this summer, so it was a long summer.''
Many of Williams' earlier problems could be attributed to having to adjust to a new system and new philosophy after being traded to the Cavs from the Milwaukee Bucks in August.
Other early season problems can be contributed to those two surgeries ? one for a sports hernia that required Williams to take it easy during the offseason.

Cavaliers turn up the 'D' in Dallas

BULLS AT CAVALIERS; Tonight, 8; Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland; TV FS Ohio, ESPN, WUAB Channel 43

Chalk up road win No. 1 for the Cavaliers ? a big one Monday in Big D.

Tonight, the Cavs look to build on that momentum when they open up a stretch of four straight games against the Central Division by hosting the Bulls at 8.

With three of the four at home, it's a chance for the Cavs to get things going after a 2-2 start. Their 100-81 rout of the Mavericks hinted that the Cavs are ready to get rolling.

"It's all about defense," LeBron James said after the win. "Our defense is where we make our mark."

Defense helped propel the Cavs to an early 16-point lead, and it helped them put the game away in the second half. They limited Dallas to 40.8 percent shooting. They were especially tough on All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, whose 8 points on 3-of-11 shooting was his worst offensive game since last December.

The constant activity of Ben Wallace and Anderson Varejao left Nowitzki with little room to operate.

"You've got to give those guys credit, but not just those guys because it's not just one guy guarding one man, it's five guys guarding the basketball," Cavaliers Head Coach Mike Brown said.

The Cavs are limiting teams to 88.5 points on 41.7 percent shooting.

The Cavs will be on ESPN tonight at eight if anyone is interested.

SWEET! Love when games are on TV.. I'm also liking the fact that they split Columbus Blue Jackets games and Cleveland Cavaliers games between the FSN in standard def and FSN HD! That way I can watch both of them play!
