Cavs commit to Gibson with new five-year contract

Associated Press

Updated: July 16, 2008, 11:31 AM ET

CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers signed guard Daniel Gibson to a five-year contract Wednesday.
Gibson's signing is the Cavaliers' first major move of the offseason. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Gibson averaged a career-high 10.4 points per game on 43 percent shooting last season. He sprained his left ankle in a Feb. 20 game at Indiana and missed 18 games.
Gibson had arthroscopic surgery last month on the ankle and is expected to be ready for training camp.
He missed the final two games of Cleveland's playoff series against Boston with a separated shoulder.

Boobie Gibson re-signed with the Cavs on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers have come to terms with guard Daniel "Boobie" Gibson on a multi-year contract. The length of the contract is five years, according to NBA sources. The 6-2, 194-pound guard, 22, became a fan favorite because of his shooting touch and ready smile. Not to mention that nickname.
After a sterling rookie season, Gibson seemed to be en route to stardom last year, when he averaged career highs of 10.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and finished second to Jason Kapono in the Foot Locker 3-Point Shootout. He also was the MVP of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge during All-Star weekend, scoring 33 points on 11 3-pointers to lead the sophomores to a 136-109 victory.
But he missed 17 games with a sprained left ankle shortly after that and struggled to regain his form. He suffered a separated shoulder in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics and missed the last two games. He recently had arthroscopic surgery to clean out his left ankle, but he is expected to be ready for training camp.

I'm glad to see Boobie sign without any trouble. I think he is a player that knows he is in a good situation and doesn't want to do anything to damage it. Hopefully the contract is fair for both sides.
I think West will be in the same boat although I think he will probably get a 3 year deal. He knows what else is out there and I would think he is pretty happy being in Cleveland starting next to Lebron compared to the other places he's been. The only hangup could be that he will probably get less years and money than Boobie even though he is the starter.

I know many here will disagree, but I am very happy we didn't just sign James Posey to a 24 MILLION DOLLAR contract. Good role player, not worth that much though.

Theres a reason he signed for the league minimum after his stint in Miami in which he was a good role player.

Summer league: Wizards keep Cavs winless

by From staff reports Saturday July 19, 2008, 8:49 AM

Andray Blatche registered 22 points, including the go-ahead dunk with 1:04 left, to lead the Washington Wizards to a 72-69 victory over the Cavaliers in NBA Summer League play in Las Vegas.
First-round pick J.J. Hickson had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Cavaliers, but missed two free throws with 43 seconds left and Cleveland trailing by one. Forward Romel Beck led the Cavs with 13 points and Clay Tucker scored 11.
Former St. Edward star Jawad Williams had nine points and four rebounds for the Cavs. Williams gave the Cavs their first lead of the game, 43-42, when he hit a 3-pointer with 5:16 left in the third quarter.

JJ Hickson seems like he maybe the player Ferry was hoping for when he drafted him despite most Cavs fans saying " Who ?"

Sure, it was only summer league, but for a 19 year old kid, he played pretty well. Despite the team losing all 5 games his final numbers were;

19.3pts, 7.8 reb and 53% from the field. His free throw shooting sucked, but he looks like he may end up a decent PF down the road.

I watched the entire game because my Bucks were the opponent and the kid is just a load inside 18 feet. Although I might be a bit biased since I sung his praises here right after the draft. He really has an advanced understanding of how to get defenders off balance in the post, i.e.: pump fakes, up and unders, spin moves, etc. Then he uses his body to shield and coordination to put the ball through the basket from all different angles. His jump shot is solid, and if you step off or back up too much, he has the handle to dribble into better scoring position.

Defensively and on the boards, he tries, which is a good sign. He reacts less quickly throughout the game because his conditioning is not optimum though. He has the athleticism, strength, and attitude to be solid throughout the game on the boards and on D. I doubt they'll ever be his calling card but good enough the way he scores.

Cavs fans are really going to appreciate the pick once they actually see him play.

Las Vegas- Cleveland's No. 1 pick J.J. Hickson scored a game-high 24 points but it was not enough as the Cavs lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, 88-72, Sunday in the final NBA Summer League game.

Early reviews are positive for Cavs pick By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist

The Browns opened training camp Wednesday, so it's a good time to catch up on the Cavs . . .
First-round draft choice J.J. Hickson made quite an impression during the Cavs' summer league games in Las Vegas, which ended this week.
''Wow,'' wrote ESPN.com. ''He did everything that can be asked of him, within a flow that resembles what he'll face during the regular season. Hickson has a monster body, good activity and a mature face-up game ? pretty special for a soon-to-be 20-year-old.''

on a seperate but related note, New Jersey just traded pg Marcus Williams to GS for a 1st rounder.

aside from the unavoidable "this will help with Lebron" rubbish, this affects cleveland in that GS was rumored to be the only other team lookiong at Delonte West as a starting PG.

Cavaliers' West ponders going east - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

Hopefully Ferry doesn't let West go to Europe. If a Russian team will give him 2 for 10, I'd offer 3 for 15-16. I feel ok about the Cavs with the makeup from last season, but if they lose West they will lose their only true PG.

Possible Cavs-Nuggets deal

Posted: Monday August 04, 2008 07:03AM ET

The Cavs are talking to Denver about restricted free agent J.R. Smith, and they should go after him hard. The 6-6 Smith is athletic, shot 40 percent on 3-pointers and 46 percent overall while averaging 12.3 points in only 19 minutes a game. With Denver signing wing man Dahntay Jones and being on a binge to cut payroll (they gave Marcus Camby to the Clippers to cut $10 million), it seems Smith should be available.

Interesting. Smith could lighten the scoring load on LBJ, but I'm not sure how he fits into the offense. Granted, I don't know a lot about him, but the few times I've seen him play, he's looked like a fairly explosive athletic scorer.
