Cavs 08-09 Season - Central Div Champs (official thread)

Interesting. Smith could lighten the scoring load on LBJ, but I'm not sure how he fits into the offense. Granted, I don't know a lot about him, but the few times I've seen him play, he's looked like a fairly explosive athletic scorer.

Since when do the Cavs have an offense?

The reason he doesn't see lots of Pt is defense...He is an explosive scorer tho, and can shoot the rock...

Honestly I liked the talk about Barbosa more...there was talk about him that a deal maybe close a week or so ago, in a trade for Wild thing and some others...

Tarence Kinsey should fit right in with the Cavaliers.

"Defense is what gets me going," the 6-6 guard said in a phone interview Monday after signing with the Cavs. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kinsey, 24, split last season with the Memphis Grizzlies and with
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul of the Turkish Basketball League. In 11 games with Memphis, he averaged 3.6 points on .421 percent shooting and 1.1 rebounds in 8.7 minutes per game. He averaged 9.2 points in 14 regular-season games with Fenerbahce Ulker.

"Tarence is a talented young perimeter player that has good length and athleticism," Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry said. "He has shown an ability to be an effective player on both ends of the court."

Kinsey, a Tampa, Fla., native who is taking part in an NBA skills camp in Las Vegas, was undrafted after playing four seasons at the University of South Carolina, where he averaged 15.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists as a senior. He was signed by Memphis in 2006-07 and played in 48 games, averaging 7.7 points on .457 percent shooting.

He learned about playing NBA defense from former Cavs coach Mike Fratello. "He taught me you have to have a love for doing it," Kinsey said. "You have to take defense personally. I don't like to be scored on."

Hopefully will eventually get Lebron some legitimate help. Jordan needed Pippen. As awesome and great as Jordan was, he probably doesn't win any of those championships if he doesn't have Pippen.

Bron needs the help so he can get that ring.

kinsey played very well for the last quarter of the season his rookie year. what happened last year is puzzling.

really, this just seems like filler for devin brown's vacated spot.

Yep, the Devin Brown/Ira Newble type player. He will be at the end of the bench and might get minutes if the team is lacking defensive intensity.

Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics continue rivalry in preseason

Not only will the Cavaliers open the regular season against the Boston Celtics, but they also will face the defending NBA champions twice in the preseason, according to the eight-game exhibition schedule released today.
The Cavs will face the Celtics on Oct. 10 in Providence, R.I., and on Oct. 14 in Pittsburgh. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
The Cavs will play three preseason games at Quicken Loans Arena: Oct. 7 against Toronto, Oct. 16 against San Antonio and Oct. 18 against Philadelphia. They will close out the preseason with games at Detroit on Oct. 22 and against Washington at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus on Oct. 24.

Cavs traded away Joe Smith and Damon Jones today in a 3 way deal.

The Cavs get Milwaukee PG/SG Mo Williams in return....

good player, still not a legit #2....still hoping something can be done at the deadline to get LeBron his playmaker

No, not quite a #2 but definitely an upgrade offensively and thats a step in the right direction. He can shoot. I've heard his D is lacking but I'm sure MPH will work on that. I guess this means the end of Delonte West, unless he signs the qo for the season, then bolts after the year.

Nice move... I really like Joe Smith... but probably the Joe Smith in my head.. and not the Joe Smith of today... parting with Damon (contract) is a BIG move forward.. and West is still within reach

Also seems to imply the confidence in Hixson as being a real asset.. fresh legs,, sorry Joe--damn you were sweet.. in your day

This makes us real strong for next year...It allows us to have Delonte for next year, as he will take a qualifying offer, or else he decides he wants to stay long, but probably not and then we will have money either at the deadline still with Wally's contract and Snow's to swing a deal or those 2 and West come off the books at the end of the year...

With a 17 pt scorer our offense will be better...Defense could struggle some with Mo and then Boobie/Wally at the 2g, but we will still be strong up front...

In Williams we get a creator and scorer which will help LBJ...If the team meshes I think we are looking at being right there with the Celtics...

Boobie, West, Williams, Wally, gives you 4 options to score in the backcourt, none of them are guys you can not guard, and they can score, and West and Williams can create for themselves...

Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly close to acquiring guard Mo Williams from Milwaukee
Posted by Mary Schmitt Boyer, Plain Dealer August 13, 2008 15:46PM
The Cavaliers apparently are about to pull off a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks to obtain point guard Mo Williams.

Various media outlets, including ohio.com, newsok.com and ESPN.com, have reported that the Cavs are part of a six-player deal involving Milwaukee and Oklahoma City, although neither the Cavs nor the Bucks would confirm the deal.

The Cavs would get Williams from the Bucks in exchange for forward Joe Smith and guard Damon Jones and their expiring contracts. The Bucks would send Smith and forward Desmond Mason to Oklahoma City, which would send point guard Luke Ridnour and swingman Adrian Griffin to the Bucks.

Williams, long admired by the Cavs, averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 assists for the Bucks last season and would fill the need for an additional offensive force the team has been seeking. But he has five years and $43 million left on a six-year $51 million he signed with the Bucks last year.

Smith, who will make $4.8 million next season in the last year of his contract, was obtained from the Chicago Bulls as part of the trading deadline megadeal that also brought Ben Wallace to the Cavs. He averaged 8.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in 27 games with the Cavs.

Jones, who will make $4.4 million next season in the last year of his deal, averaged 6.5 points in 67 games, but the self-proclaimed greatest shooter in the world saw his role diminish as his third season with the Cavs wound down.

With Williams apparently slated to become the Cavs starting point guard, the question is what becomes of restricted free agent Delonte West, who filled that role last season after being obtained from Seattle. Although the sides have been talking all summer, no deal has been forthcoming and it appears now West likely will be forced to accept the Cavs qualifying offer of $2.8 million for next season.
