Cavs' release Eric Snow with chronic knee injury

CLEVELAND -- The Cavs have made a "medically necessary" release of veteran guard Eric Snow on Sunday. It indicates the NBA has approved the team's disability claim for his left knee, wiping him off the books for luxury tax purposes.
In insurance and tax savings, the Cavs will reduce their payroll nearly $11 million with the decision, which has been in the works for about a year.
Snow suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee working out in Atlanta before last season. He had surgery and returned but was never the same. He shut it down last February knowing he probably could never play again. Over the summer when he tried to work out, the knee instantly swelled.
The Canton native and former second round pick played four years for the Cavs and 13 years overall averaging 6.8 points and 5.0 assists in 847 games. He also played in 103 playoff games and reached the Finals with the Sonics, 76ers and Cavs.
"It was a great privilege and dream come true, not just to play for my hometown team, but to finish my career in front of the fans who have given me so much support throughout my career," Snow said.
Snow, who is working for NBA TV this season, is expected to continue his career as a coach or broadcaster.

Cleveland Cavaliers get encouraging news on Anderson Varejao and Ben Wallace
by Brian Windhorst / Plain Dealer Reporter

INDEPENDENCE -- The Cavaliers got some good news today where their big men are concerned.
Forward Anderson Varejao had an MRI on his injured right wrist this morning at the Cleveland Clinic. It showed no structural damage and he is being listed as day-to-day.
Varejao, who missed his first game of the season Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs, did not practice today, but there is a chance he will practice on Tuesday.
Ben Wallace, who has been out nearly six weeks with a broken bone in his right leg, practiced today and was upgraded from out to questionable for Wednesday's game against the Washington Wizards.
If Wallace reports no problem after a full-contact practice on Tuesday, there's a good chance he could be upgraded to probable at that time.
