Cavs 07-08 Season Thread

Yea, I agree as well. The biggest thing he said, was we didn't give up much.

And its so true.

We lost a bunch of roster fillers, and DG. Hughes was a threat, but inconsistant as crap.

I also agree with the 3 ball.

Wally + Boobie= Opened up the lane, cause Bron Brons comin through!

If not, it = 3.

Finally get a chance to comment on the trade...

I like it...We upgraded out defense, and cut ties with Drew and Larry...

I really like West's game and think that Smith and Wally can provide some O off the bench...

We don't lose anything in terms of rebounding, and gain on defense...We still have the best player in the league...I think we might lean on Sasha in terms of more offense out of him when he comes back...

Oh I agree we got a good deal. Improvemenet on "D"

The only part that worries me about this trade is with Wallace's lack of offense his guy is going to be able to help defend LBJ more so than say Drew's guy would of, but I think that If Ben stays around the hoop some and finds ways to not clog up the lane that he will be able to get some easy buckets from LBJ...

Also feel that he will actually be hitting guys with screens, unlike some of the other guys...

I love Iggy and Wallace banging down low. Iggy finally has a true force to help him and only make his game better.

2 ohio men back home playing for the CAVS, nice.
I think this is a great trade for the CAVS but ,Lebron lost Gooden his party buddy.

Michael Arace commentary: Stop the presses! Cavs' deal biggest of all

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
arace22.IMG_02-22-08_C1_J39E6G2.jpg

It's Thursday afternoon at the desk. Write a few lines, check the clock, it's 2:50 p.m., write a few lines, check the clock, it's 3:01, the NBA trade deadline has passed, and it's time again to rip Danny Ferry, that spineless, do-nothing Dookie ?
Here's how the bottom of the column looked at 4 p.m., when it was first filed:
More optimistic sorts point out that the Cavs ' chemistry is special and shouldn't be spoiled. Pragmatic types rue the supposed fact that the Cavs have contracts and/or players they can't shuck (Larry Hughes, anyone?) and so trades are rendered impossible. Me, I'm a realist, and I don't buy any of that stuff. ? There were plenty of willing partners out there, and Ferry couldn't find one. This smacks of a lack of imagination. It is a crime of omission. ? LeBron James will pop out of televisions in the ensuing weeks. He will inspire teammates and awe fans. Come June, he'll be on his couch, watching with the rest of us, wondering what could have been done yesterday .

NBA roundup: Cavs remake roster with two trades
Veterans Wallace, Szczerbiak bring support to James
Friday, February 22, 2008 3:13 AM

From wire reports

At 2:59 p.m. yesterday, one minute before the trade deadline, Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry called NBA officials in New York to say he was making a major trade. Two, actually.
They must have been surprised.
Ferry was dismantling his team.
In a complex, 11-player swap involving Cleveland, Chicago and Seattle, Ferry dealt half his active roster to acquire center Ben Wallace and forward Joe Smith from the Bulls and forward Wally Szczerbiak and guard Delonte West from the SuperSonics.

while a valid concern, cleveland's bench scoring (when healthy) increases exponentially when you have guys like joe smith and sasha/wally coming in instead of ira newble and dwayne jones.

Team looks different, but will gamble work?
Deals will challenge ability to juggle lineups
By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal columnist

Published on Friday, Feb 22, 2008

Danny Ferry pulled off what didn't seem possible.
He found teams willing to trade for his players. He dumped Larry Hughes' contract. He got help for LeBron James. He brought in a point guard.
And he changed the look of the Cavs almost completely on one Thursday afternoon.
Best hope it works.

Because there are gambles involved, and if the gambles don't pay off, the Cavs will merely have reshuffled the chairs instead of bringing in fancy new ones. Or in this case, old ones.
The main gamble says that Ben Wallace can return to being the kind of player he was in Detroit two years ago and can show that he's not ? as many have said and written ? declining at the age of 33.
The gamble also says that Wally Szczerbiak can be the shooter the Cavs need, that Szczerbiak's 3-point abilities will mesh well with James' passing.

Gibson could miss 4 to 6 weeks
Friday, February 22, 2008
BY TOM WITHERS
AP SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson could miss six weeks with a severely sprained left ankle, the latest costly injury for the defending Eastern Conference champions.

Gibson injured his ankle in the second quarter of Wednesday night's win over Indiana when he and Pacers guard Travis Diener were diving in the lane for a loose ball. Gibson had to be helped off the court by teammates.

I agree for the most part. I think this really helps Cleveland get some more people that can help contribute night in and night out. But, I really think what LeBron needs is a player like Hedo Turkoglu (offensively, def. not on the defensive side of the ball) Someone that will be good to go off for around 20 a game to help him out. I still feel with one more good scorer/roll player this team would be right up there with Boston because LeBron is that good.

What this trade does is redefine our role players. It solidifies our front court. There is so many combinations we can match up with any team out there.

The GREAT part of this trade is we are still in the same position cap-wise as before. We still have a ton of expiring contracts to trade next year.

Snow @ $7.3 mil
Jones @ $4.4 mil
Wally @ $13 mil
Smith @ $5.9 mil

That is $30.6 mil in expiring contracts that can easily be traded either this offseason or during next year to get a SG/PG that LeBron needs.

But the problem is our backcourt suffers this year (offensively AND defensively). The biggest question is how will Delonte West play? Can he defend? Cuz no matter how much I didn't like Hughes he at least was able to defend.

That is why is it still a good trade cap-wise. I am not bashing the deal at all, and I like it. But, I don't know if this is the key that unlocks everything for them. And, FWIW with Gibson I wouldn't even try to trade for a PG like they were talking about.

hughes was a decent defender, but he struggled defending the point quite a bit. iMO defensively Hughes and delonte west are a wash at guarding the point. hughes could guard a SG however, but west would likely struggle in that role.

A lot of this trade is a wash also considering Wallace's contract, but obviously the Cavs needed to do something. I think Kobe is the best scorer the league, and perhaps the best player in the league. (The only reason I think LeBron is better is because in a couple years he might average a triple-double) But, imagine Lebron just on a team like the Lakers with players who step up and contribute every game. (talking about pre-Gasol trade) I hope the Cavs do something for LeBron's sake because if not he is going to New York.
