Cavs 07-08 Season Thread

We haven't seen him much but boy, is there a player in the NBA with less of an offensive game than E Snow? He took shots tonight that I look like mine would if I played with those guys.

It really is amazing that they won tonight with a starting lineup of Z, 'Bron,Snow,D Brown and Damon Jones. Then throw in Dwayne Jones, Billy Thomas and Kaniel Dickens off the bench. They play the majority of the game with 3 guards yet still win the battle of the boards 43-31.

Devin Brown with a nice fertilizer game: 10-10-7

Good win tonight...The fact that they had to play so hard to get it...

So if we add the 4 guys to the roster we will be at 10 regulars and that is still counting Snow and Dwayne Jones, so I see us going with a lot of 8 man rotation until Sasha, Wild Thing, and Boobie get back...

BTW has anyone heard a timetable on Sasha and Wild Thing returning...Watched the ESPN broadcast tonight and didn't know if the guys on fox mentioned anything about a timetable for them...

Also 33-15-8 is a hell of a stat line considering the team he had around him...If he had a better supporting cast tonight he would of had 33-15-15...

James' 33 points, late free throws boost Cavs

Cleveland guard Eric Snow, center, loses the ball while under pressure from Washington's Andray Blatche, left, and Antawn Jamison.

CLEVELAND -- Short-handed, undermanned, inadequate. The Cleveland Cavaliers weren't themselves last night, nowhere close. And it didn't matter.
LeBron James was still around.
James made two free throws with 7.8 seconds left and scored 33 points as the Cavaliers, playing with just eight players one day after a humongous trade, had enough to beat the Washington Wizards 90-89 last night.
"As long as I'm on the court, I expect us to win," James said.

I hate to say it but Washington should be ashamed of themselves for losing that game last night. If there ever was a game to steal one from the Cavs it was last night. Also happy to see all the new guys there last night, they didn't have to report until this evening.

Very true, but Washington is without their two best players in Arenas and Butler...

Cavaliers Payroll Analysis

Sunday, February 24, 2008

Player: LeBron JamesContract status: Can become a free agent after the 2009-10 season, if not, will earn $17.1 million on last year of deal.Outlook: James holds all of the cards. He will watch management closely in its quest to build a championship caliber team. If not, he bolts. Player: Zydrunas IlgauskasContract status: Has the player option for the 2009-10 season for $11.5 million.Outlook: Ilgauskas will pick up the option and it could be his last year in basketball because he will become 35 at the end of the 2009-10 season. Player: Eric SnowContract status: Next season is the last year in Snow's contract.Outlook: If he's not traded or bought out over the summer, next season will be Snow's last year with the Cavs and probably last year in the league. Snow will be 36 next season. Player: Anderson VarejaoContract status: Varejao has the option to accept $6.2 million for the 2009-10 season or become a free agent the following year.Outlook: Varejao will probably forgo his option and become a free agent. His contract holdout was about more money, and he didn't get what he believed he deserved, so he won't miss out on his next opportunity.

Cavaliers trade lets Ferry make some corrections

Sunday, February 24, 2008
We're not in Kansas anymore.
Danny Ferry's dealings at the deadline made for the boldest trade since Shawn Kemp.
On the brighter side . . . the Cavaliers acquired defensive toughness (center Ben Wallace), a smarter veteran presence (forward Joe Smith), a shooter who can wear out defenses and apparently his own welcome (forward Wally Szczerbiak), and at least the semblance of a point guard (Delonte West).
@StoryAd
What they lost is much of Ferry's highest-profile early work as Cavaliers general manager. Notice we didn't call it his stellar work.
Guard Larry Hughes was his first major free-agent signing. Guard Shannon Brown was his first first-round draft pick. Forward Donyell Marshall was viewed as a good secondary hire at the time, but aged quickly.
The bottom line is that GMs make mistakes. Some even admit them. The best a GM can do is not try to justify them.

CAVALIERS INSIDER
Cleveland Cavaliers and new players not promising a smooth debut

Sunday, February 24, 2008Mary Schmitt Boyer
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cavaliers coach Mike Brown gave his new team one order heading into tonight's game against the visiting Memphis Grizzlies: Play hard.
"I know they're going to screw up, I'm going to screw up, even our guys who are here will screw up," he said of his reconstituted squad, "but if we play hard enough we'll give ourselves a chance to win and I think this group will do that."
Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak, Joe Smith and Delonte West took part in their first practice since being traded to Cleveland on Thursday, as did Billy Thomas and Kaniel Dickens, who were called up from the NBA Development League.

CAVS ANALYSIS
Cleveland Cavaliers trading for now, priming for later

Sunday, February 24, 2008Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
Don't ever accuse Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert of being "cheap," not after he allowed General Manager Danny Ferry to make a team-reshaping megatrade that will cost him millions.
Gone is Larry Hughes' huge contract, but the Cavaliers took on even bigger deals with Ben Wallace and Wally Szczerbiak. Those deals, along with the acquisition of Joe Smith and Delonte West have made the Cavs' payroll one of the highest in the league.
The Cavs' payroll of $80.8 million is third highest in the league, trailing only the New York Knicks ($88.8 million) and the Dallas Mavericks ($104.5 million).
@StoryAd
A sports agent who asked to remain anonymous, said the Cavs "killed" their salary cap for the next few years. But for Gilbert's sake, the multiplayer, multiteam trades are about winning now and keeping LeBron James happy -- at least until James can opt out of his deal after the 2009-10 season.
"They had to do something this year to keep LeBron engaged," the agent said. "They had to do all they could to put a winning team around him. They had to do it."

Windhorst on the NBA
Ferry did what was needed for Cavs Cavs now have ammo to be players in deals
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Sunday, Feb 24, 2008
As hard as this might be to believe, considering how long it took for the Cavaliers to make roster changes, what happened last week was a trade, not the trade.
The three-team, 11-player blockbuster is not exactly the sort of move General Manager Danny Ferry envisioned when he decided he needed to upgrade the talent on his roster. For quite some time, he had been looking to bring in a star next to LeBron James but kept striking out when they became available.
Instead he was able to make a move to shore up some weaknesses and, in theory if the Cavs get healthy, provide more depth. It is true the Cavs' defense hasn't been as good this year as last, which Ben Wallace was targeted to help. It's also a fact that shooters are like gold around James, which is where Wally Szczerbiak comes in.
But that probably doesn't change Ferry's true dreams, which is to get what former coach Paul Silas called a ''big-timer'' to play with James. One like Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett or Mike Bibby. Ferry's not alone; James has made it clear that he desires such a move sometime in the future as well.
Which is why you have to look deeper to understand the reasons why the deal Ferry and his assistant GMs Chris Grant and Lance Blanks pulled together actually didn't change those plans.
