Things were going just a little too well for the Cavaliers.
Reality bit the team Thursday when MRI and CT scans revealed a tear in Sasha Pavlovic's left foot. The injury, termed a mid-foot sprain, is expected to keep Pavlovic out six-to-eight weeks. He will be in a cast for the next week and then will be re-evaluated.
Ironically it happened during one of the apexes of the season, the third quarter Wednesday when the Cavs were in the process of outscoring the Washington Wizards 43-17. Pavlovic landed on a Wizards player's foot and was forced to leave the game.
The Cavs have won 11-of-13 games since getting their entire team healthy and returning to last year's starting lineup, which included Pavlovic at shooting guard. And although he's been in a shooting slump for much of the season, he was emerging this week, scoring 10 points with four assists in Miami on Monday and putting up 13 points with a career-high seven assists Wednesday.
''It will hurt our team. Sasha was finally starting to find his groove,'' LeBron James said. ''Hopefully guys will step up.''
Coach Mike Brown did not say who he planned to put in the starting lineup in place of Pavlovic, but it will likely be Devin Brown. Pavlovic, who is shooting just 35 percent this season, was primarily used for his defensive ability and his size. Minutes for Damon Jones will also likely increase.
The biggest issue might be how the Cavs deal with altering the rotation, which Mike Brown has struggled with at times this season.
