After averaging only 4.6 points in limited regular-season duty and making little impact in the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Cavaliers guard burned the Pistons with 21- and 31-point efforts in the Eastern Conference finals. The latter performance, which included a 19-point fourth quarter, came in series-clinching Game 6. Now a starter in his second season, Gibson is among the league leaders in three-point shooting.

The Cavaliers might be headed in the right direction despite their obvious offensive problems. Mike Brown's decision to go back to last year's starting lineup with Larry Hughes and Sasha Pavlovic at guard seems to have affected the defense.
The 6-foot-7 Pavlovic and the 6-5 Hughes create matchup problems for opponents; the Cavs have held foes to 90 or fewer points in four of the past six games. They held Atlanta to 41 percent shooting from the field Wednesday.
The Cavs would still like to trade for a point guard, so Hughes and Pavlovic might be a temporary solution. The guard the Cavs tried to acquire last season, Sacramento's Mike Bibby, has been out after thumb surgery. He started practicing last week, so the rumors could start anew.

Cleveland Cavaliers stepping up on defense

Roadell Hickman/The PDImproved play on defense, like this blocked shot by Dwayne Jones, has inspired the Cavaliers.
Cavaliers vs. Kings

The new year has brought a new look for the Cavaliers, which is, coincidentally, a lot like the old look. The Cavaliers are finally, in the words of coach Mike Brown, "embracing our identity" of a defensive team.
And it has yielded a newfound improved play that is inspiring enough to set some new goals.
"Maybe go on a four-game winning streak," center Zydrunas Ilgauskas suggested Thursday. "And then win again for three, four games. And just get over .500."

CAVALIERS INSIDER

The Cavaliers assigned forward Cedric Simmons to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Developmen tal League. The Vipers play their games at Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.
The Cavs, New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets are affiliated with the Vipers. The NBDL is used to help develop young talent on NBA rosters.
"This will give Cedric some time on the floor," said Cavs coach Mike Brown. "He reinjured that ankle a couple of times, and this will give him some confidence and give us a chance to evaluate him more than five minutes here and five minutes there."

Fourth-quarter surge sends Cavs past Kings

Saturday, January 5, 2008 2:50 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND -- Perhaps the Cavaliers are turning a corner in what has been an average season.
Cleveland won for the fourth time in five games last night with a 97-93 victory over the Sacramento Kings.
The Cavaliers have been solid in the fourth quarter lately, and last night was no different. An 18-4 run to start the quarter helped erase a six-point deficit.
The Cavs didn't play their best game against a Kings team that was without its two leading scorers, Kevin Martin (24.5 points per game) and Ron Artest (19.1), and guard Mike Bibby.

CAVALIERS INSIDER
Trade rumors continue about Mike Bibby going to Cleveland Cavaliers

Saturday, January 05, 2008 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Mike Bibby-to-the-Cavaliers trade rumors that started last season have continued, especially since the Cavs have struggled this season and the point guard position remains a weak spot.
Bibby has not played this season because of a torn ligament suffered during the preseason. Bibby, of the Sacramento Kings, shot several jump shots during pregame. He expects to return within 10 days.
As far as the trade rumors are concerned, Bibby said he has no idea if he will be with the Kings after the trade deadline in February.

Cleveland Cavaliers helped by changing of the guards, comments Terry Pluto

Saturday, January 05, 2008

Mike Brown loves big, de fensive-minded guards.
That's why the Cavaliers coach is starting Larry Hughes and Sasha Pavlovic, neither shooting 35 percent. But Brown is kidding himself if he believes this combination is going to help the Cavs make an impact in the playoffs.
Nor does Brown want to start 6-2 Daniel Gibson, the thin guard who is the team's best outside shooter but sometimes struggles on defense.

LeBron James drives between two defenders for two of his 39 points.

TORONTO -- For three quarters he was ordinary. Then, when it mattered most, LeBron James was unstoppable.
James scored 39 points, including 24 in the fourth quarter, to help the Cleveland Cavaliers rally for a 93-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors yesterday.
"In the fourth quarter, he was amazing," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. "He just took the game over and put us on his back."

15 minutes and NO points
24 minutes and TWO points

sure glad we signed these two restricteds

You honestly wish they didn't resign Andy? He had a bad game yesterday, but he has been as good as ever at what he does and his shooting has improved. Pavs has been a waste. Everyone had a bad game last night until they started playing hard in the 4th quarter, but it was too late by then.
