CAVALIERS INSIDER
Jones, Newble ready for pine time

Dallas- The season of frustration among Cavaliers players apparently seeped onto the bench late in the fourth quarter during Tuesday's game at The Q against the Heat.
Coach Mike Brown asked Damon Jones and Ira Newble to go into the game with less than a minute left and with the Cavs holding a commanding lead. It was mop-up time. This is time usually designated for rookies or players on their last NBA leg. Jones and Newble are neither rookies nor at the end of their careers.
Veteran Eric Snow went in instead.

Dallas- The Cavaliers play at New Orleans tonight, and they hope to continue the good signs coach Mike Brown has seen in recent games.
"If you take the wins in three out of our last four games, we won against two high-level teams in [the] Los Angeles [Lakers] and Dallas," Brown said. "They're high-level teams because they score a lot of points and they shoot high field-goal percentages. We did a terrific job.
"Defensively, we stepped it up a notch, and we're embracing that."

Hornets hold off Cavs

Sunday, December 30, 2007 3:47 AM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- David West had 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead the New Orleans Hornets to an 86-76 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers last night.

Chris Paul had 20 points and nine assists and tied a career high with seven steals, and Tyson Chandler added 11 points and 12 rebounds to help New Orleans (20-10) win its fifth straight and tie its best start through 30 games in franchise history.
LeBron James drew the first sellout of the season in New Orleans Arena and also drew a lot of attention from New Orleans' defense. James tried to let his teammates do most of the scoring through the first three quarters, but it didn't work.
New Orleans led by double digits throughout the second half, when James scored 13 of his 21 points.

CAVALIERS INSIDER
James pleased with All-Star Game site

Sunday, December 30, 2007 Branson Wright

Plain Dealer Reporter
New Orleans- Saturday's game against the Hornets was the Cavaliers' only visit to New Orleans this season, but LeBron James will likely return as the starting forward for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star Game in February.
The NBA hopes the financial windfall from All-Star Weekend will help the city's economy, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.
James is happy the game is in New Orleans.

No doubt: Cavs backcourt is pitiful
Team's fortunes won't improve until starting guards Hughes, Pavlovic become more of a scoring threat
Published on Monday, Dec 31, 2007

NEW ORLEANS: Right now, the Cavaliers are insulting the history and traditions of the game of basketball.
As John Wooden or any other veteran coach will gladly explain, a comprehensive team should have a point guard and a shooting guard. Or, if you prefer today's terms, a ''one'' and a ''two.'' These are titles that relate to the guards' supposed roles on offense, of course.

Fighting a holdout hangover

Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic are prime examples of the best and worst that can occur for players who miss training camp.
Varejao and Pavlovic were contract holdouts over the summer. Pavlovic settled first, signing a three-year deal a day after the Cavaliers' season opener. His first action was the third game of the year, Nov. 4 against Phoenix.
Varejao, on the other hand, missed training camp and the first 21 games of the season before signing. But while Pavlovic has labored to find a rhythm, missing training camp has not been much of an issue for Varejao. So far, his numbers are slightly improved over last season.

CLEVELAND: The Cavaliers took a break from each other for the holiday.
Coach Mike Brown gave them most of Sunday, all of Monday and most of today off.
Many players took the time to fly home or to celebrate New Year's Eve in a warm climate. But they left with a thought in their heads: Keep up the defense.
The club has been teetering on turning around things over the past two weeks, scoring a few impressive victories but still dealing with a host of flaws that kept them from putting together any sort of winning streak.
