CLEVELAND -- LeBron James winced as he pressed the ice bag tightly against his swollen jaw.
On Christmas, he felt lucky to still have his two front teeth.
"I got elbowed by Shaq in the face, which is not a good thing," James said. "Ever."
James shook off the big man's blow to the head and scored 25 points, Drew Gooden had 18 and Cleveland's defense arrived in time for the holiday, lifting the struggling Cavaliers to a 96-82 win over the Miami Heat yesterday.
James added 12 assists and outshined fellow superstar Dwyane Wade, who scored 22 points but didn't make his first field goal of the second half until there was only 4:01 remaining.

Cleveland Cavaliers need guard Daniel Gibson in starting lineup, says Terry Pluto
Wednesday, December 26, 2007
The Cavaliers desperately needed a game like this, a game where they win big at home, where some outside shots actually go in and where their defense shows up.
But coach Mike Brown should not think that his lineup change of starting guard Larry Hughes over Daniel Gibson had anything to do with his team's 96-82 victory against Miami.
Brown is looking for a way to revive his backcourt of a year ago, when Hughes and Sasha Pavlovic were 17-6 near the end of the regular season. The problem is last year is history, and so is Pavlovic's jump shot.

Cavs star LeBron James cooled down enough to speak with the media before Tuesday's game at Quicken Loans Arena. James did not speak after Sunday's humiliating 105-96 loss to the Golden State Warriors at The Q.
"I didn't feel like speaking to anybody," James said. "Nobody . . . I've said enough."
There has not been much to say about the Cavs, a team that was one of the league's best defensively last season but has lost its way.

Wizards not interested in re-acquiring Hughes
Wednesday, Dec 26, 2007 6:30 am EST
According to various reports, former Washington Wizard Larry Hughes has been placed on the trading block by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Hughes, who left Washington to sign a five-year deal worth between $65 million and $70 million with Cleveland in the summer of 2005, has struggled to play at the level he displayed with the Wizards during the 2004-05 season.
Hughes has battled injuries, complained about his role in Coach Mike Brown's offense and this season is shooting a career-worst 33.8 percent. He was also booed during Sunday night's home loss to Golden State.
The Wizards are reportedly among the teams that have been contacted about possible interest in Hughes, but the Wizards have no interest.

Cavs outmuscle Mavericks
Good defense gives Cleveland its first win in Dallas since 2000

DALLAS: It's been quite a struggle, but the Cavaliers are starting to find some traction.
It's too early and the Cavs too inconsistent for anything to be labeled a statement win, but they got themselves a confidence win on Thursday. Again relying on their trusty old friend, defense, the Cavs were able to grind out an 88-81 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
The Cavs held the Mavs, who were fighting some tired legs coming off a loss Wednesday night in Utah, to just 37 percent shooting in the game and did it with an excellent display of defensive teamwork. Their rotations were in sync and the individual defensive performances, especially on Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki, were strong.
Overall, it was the first time the Cavs have won in north Texas since 2000 and the first time ever they'd left the American Airlines Center with a pep in their step. Those historical facts, though, meant much less than the current momentum the Cavs (14-16)
might be building.
