LeBron shines brightest in win
James scores 45 points to outduel Jefferson
By Brian Windhorst Beacon Journal sportswriter

MINNEAPOLIS: In a few years, Al Jefferson-LeBron James matchups likely won't be hidden on Thanksgiving Eve, but will be part of the NBA prime-time package.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are a long way from respectability, but Jefferson, who is a year younger than James, isn't far from being an All-Star.
The two put on quite a show at the Target Center on Wednesday, each having their moments to showcase their offensive talents. It was certainly more memorable than the eventual outcome, which the Cavaliers predictably took 97-86.

MINNEAPOLIS -- LeBron James is making this difficult game look oh so easy.
Barely breaking a sweat, James had 45 points, eight rebounds and five assists to carry the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 97-86 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves last night.
Despite playing the second game of a back-to-back, James topped 40 points for the second time in the past three games. Drew Gooden added 17 points and nine rebounds for Cleveland.

Cavaliers game day
Ilgauskas works off pounds
Increased playing time has him 10 pounds lighter than last season; he's 7th in league in rebounding
By Brian Windhorst Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Thursday, Nov 22, 2007
MINNEAPOLIS: Zydrunas Ilgauskas has a great recipe for losing weight: play more minutes.
Ilgauskas has been more active on the court this season, especially chasing rebounds. He started Wednesday seventh in the league in rebounding at 12.1 per game.
He's down almost 10 pounds from his playing weight last season ? from 265 pounds to 255 pounds ? and thinks that has helped him be more agile around the rim.
''Usually I start off a little slow and then work my way into a rhythm as the season goes on,'' Ilgauskas said. ''I didn't do anything different to lose the weight, but it may be helping.''

Cavs' Gibson looks to broaden game
Guard works to show he can do more than score from long range
By Brian Windhorst Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Nov 23, 2007
CLEVELAND: It's not exactly an insult, but if you call Daniel Gibson just ''a shooter,'' it will spark a little ire.
The Cavaliers guard earned playing time as a rookie because he was very effective as a spot-up shooter and thus far his most glorious moments have come when knocking down long 3-pointers. He's in the top five in the NBA in 3-point shooting in just his second season.

An open letter to Anderson Varejao

Posted by Terry Pluto, Plain Dealer columnist November 23, 2007 06:31AM

Categories: Cavaliers

Your holdout is the longest in the 37-year history of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
OK, it's not actually a holdout. You are a restricted free agent, meaning you are not under contract or any obligation to report to the Cavs. You can sit from now until eternity.

And you, Anderson Varejao of Santa Teresa, Brazil, will still be under control of the Cavs because they'd have the right to match any offer you receive. Even if you play in Europe for the next 10 years. Even if you sit on the beach for the next 20 years. Even if you hold your breath and wish upon a star and think bad things about the team that wouldn't mind paying you close to $20 million over the next three years.

as an aside, cleveland averages 100 ppg with hughes in the lineup, and 103.5 with him out.

the cavs give up 107.1 with him in the line-up, and 100.6 with him out.

cleveland is 2-4 in games he plays, and 3-2 when he doesn't.

No real horse in this fight, but 11 games is a very, very small sample size.

Also, out of curiousity...

Games with Hughes (2-4):
vs. DAL - Loss 94-72
vs. NY - Win 110-106
at PHX - Loss 103-92
at LAC - Win 103-95
at Denver - Loss 122-100 (LH played 4 minutes...although I'm inclined to think this belongs in the other category
vs. ORL - Losss 117-116

Opponent's combined records: 45-24
Combined records, excluding games against Cleveland: 41-22

Games without Hughes (4-2):
at GS - Win 108-104
at Utah - Loss 103-101
at Sac - Win 93-91
vs. Utah - Win 99-94
vs. MIL - Loss 111-107
at MIN - Win 97-86

Opponent's combined records: 30-35
Combined records, excluding games against Cleveland: 28-31

The games without Hughes have been against much weaker opponents. The Cavs should have a better record in those games.

Hughes sucks, no doubt in my mind. The money would be better spent elsewhere and he drives me nuts with some of the stupid shots he takes (and takes and takes....and takes again). I'm not sure whether the team, ignoring the salary issue, is better with him or without him, but the stats provided are not a fair indicator.

I take it back about not having a horse. I do have a horse. If Larry would attack the rim, play defense, and rebound, I'm fine with him. The occassional jumper? Yeah, why not. He does those things and the team is better with him.

But if he is going to hang around 18-22 feet from the basket and take 12-14 shots from there, I do believe the team is better without him.

And scenario B seems to be the predominant one.

I just don't understand how Mike Brown lets it go on and on. Tell him to stop shooting, dumbass.
Is anyone watching the end of this Cavs-Raptors game? LeBron just hit an amazing fadeaway to put the Cavs up 3 with 16.7... amazing shot. LBJ is at 35-12-12 right now...
I think they hit more threes today than in any game in the Lebron era. Jones, Gibson, and Lebron were on fire.

LeBron James steals the ball from the Raptors' Andrea Bargnani early in the game.

CLEVELAND -- LeBron James continues to make difficult feats look easy.

Cleveland's star forward scored 37 points yesterday as part of his third triple-double of the season in the Cavaliers' 111-108 victory over the Toronto Raptors.
"If he continues with this scoring and stats, I would hate to see the numbers at the end," teammate Damon Jones said. "They will be off the charts."
In addition to scoring six points in the final minute to seal the win, James had 12 rebounds and 12 assists.
"He's phenomenal," coach Mike Brown said. "He makes the triple-double seem effortless. I have to tell myself not to take it for granted."

CAVALIERS NOTEBOOK: LeBron: I want to be best on court

BY Chris Beaven
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND His coach said he makes it look easy. His teammates marvel at the numbers he puts up.

For LeBron James, Saturday afternoon?s triple-double in Cleveland?s 111-108 win over Toronto was just another day at the office.

?I just go out there and try to do whatever it takes for us to win,? James said. ?It?s not really as easy as it may look, but I just have to get in my comfort zone.?

Cavaliers insider: Marshall waits with weights

Posted by Branson Wright November 24, 2007 22:33PM

Donyell Marshall will spend the next six to eight weeks rehabbing the right wrist he injured Nov. 2. He has not played since. In the meantime, Marshall will try to stay in condition until he's healed.
"Obviously, when you're out for a long period of time, you have a tendency to sit around and do nothing, and you can gain weight," Marshall said. "I can still use my legs, so I lift with my legs and do cardio. If I don't to that, I'd be sitting in practice being bored and wishing I was out there. Right now, I do cardio to keep my mind right and stay in shape."

Time to give Z a pat on the back. Without Wild Thing, he's at a career high in rebounds at 12.2 per game. He's shooting nearly 52%, averaging 15.5 points while only shooting 13 times a game.

He seems to have abandoned that bad habit he's had of trying to dribble into the mid part of the lane when another defender is near the ft line and collapses to take the ball off of him.

His J has been very reliable, Hughes and Amon Ones could use a lesson from him.

Good job Z.

LeBron nets back-to-back triple-doubles as Cavs sink Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- LeBron James had his fourth triple-double of the season, and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Indiana Pacers 111-106 Sunday for their third straight win.
James, the league's leading scorer, finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. It was the 14th triple-double of his career.

If Lebron keeps up this pace, it doesn't matter what anyone else does. He's the MVP.

But where's the defense?
