Cavs 07-08 Season Thread

cb40 is right, Ferry and LBJ need to have a meeting
First thing is LBJ and Ferry need to be on the same page...
Let me first say that I do not know all of the NBA players like you guys do but I would like to say if Lebron and Danny Ferry have not had a serious discussion since last season I find that very hard to believe unless Ferry wants Lebron to leave in two seasons.

I agree with you. I would have to think that the trade this season had Lebron's blessing before they pulled the trigger. I also think that any move that is made in the next year will take Lebron backchanneling with a guy that he wants in order to get him to ask to be traded.

The more I think about it the more I want the Cavs to draft a big. West and Boobie will get the job done at PG if they can add a SG through a trade. No SG that they draft this year will be able to help for a year or two and that is the position of greatest need now. Noted any big they draft this year probably won't help for a year or two either, but they have enough depth that they don't need an NBA ready player right now. They need a big that will be ready to give energy this year, contribute next year, and dominate in his 3rd year.

I agree...Here are my draft thoughts...

Beasley, Rose, Mayo, Bayless, Lopez, Gallinari, Jordan, Gordon are 8 guys that are gone for sure before the 19th pick...

I would say Love and Randolph are gone as well...So that makes 10 guys...

So then depending on team needs, reaches, and what not anyone else on the list IMO could fall to Cleveland at this point...I will rank the guys that I like...

Nicolas Batum (SG france) honestly I would trade up for him if at all possible...

Javal McGee (C Nevada) very athletic big man, draftexpress has us drafting him, not sure if he falls tho...

Russell Westbrook (PG/SG UCLA) He is a combo guard which is not really what I want, and I don't see him falling to us, but if he is there he is the #1 player on the board and I think you gotta go with him...Extremely athletic, decent shooter, can create, and could be a solid option at the backup pg, and can get to the rim...The thing is you become a little flooded with West, Boobie, and Westbrook...

Brandon Rush (SG Kansas) I really like him, think there is a solid chance at him being there...Draftexpress and nbadraft.net both have him going after us...He is not a great creator, but has a good jump shot, good athleticism, ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, play above the rim, plays good defense...

Darrell Arthur (PF Kansas) he has really shot up the board after his final four play, he really lacks the jump shot and overall strength, but has very good athleticism, blocking shots, a soft touch around the hoop, and can put the ball on the floor to go somewhere if needed...What he doesn't have in height at only being 6'9' he makes up by his ability to leap...

Chase Budinger (SG Arizona) I know this one is probably looked down upon, but it really seems that something was going on at Zona this year in terms of guys underachieving...He doesn't have great athleticism, but he can shoot the ball, get the hole, play above the rim, with great leaping ability...Long arms as well which will help on D...

Jason Thompson (PF Rider) He is an athletic PF that I would be all for if he was on the board, but he is one that is a little more potential at this point, needs some time in the weight room, kinda like Andy with a little more athleticism...

DJ Augustin (PG Texas) At one point he was the guy that I really wanted no matter what...Now with West I don't think we need a PG, and a 5'11'' PG is tough to get by with in the NBA...I don't want to go for a bench guy at 19...Not saying all these other guys are starters right away, but they have the potential to be a starter...Like his jumper, but he lacks the overall creatability at the PG, and lacks athleticism for the NBA...

CDR (SG Memphis) He is a very unorthodox player, ugly looking jumper, but he is a long guy that finds a way to put the ball in the hole and has great athleticism...

KK (PF tOSU) most are probably shaking their head over this one...But he has potential...If we continue to play the half court style game, KK could be a very good player...He lack of quickness would hurt him early in his career until he figures out how to play at the level...He has a soft touch and would be a very solid option off the pick n pop or the pick n roll...Has solid post moves, but is going to get tore up on the defensive end...

Roy Hibbert (C GTown) Another head scrather...

Dante Green (SF Cuse) a solid 6'10'', not sure if he has the athletcism to guard in the NBA, and really is strictly a 3 point spot up shooter in the NBA, which is not really what we are looking for...

Right now this is the order of guys on the board and I would take the highest guy on the board...But it will probably change by the time the draft roles around and we make a move or two, or we hear more about the draft camps and who is performing well...

Given the need for a big in the near future I like KK. I see him as a slightly more athletic Z in a year or two. If he came back to OSU he would be top 10 next year. He might not be quick enough to run, but his shooting ability and size would be great to have. If the Cavs could trade for Redd and sign Posey after the season that would make a great Ohio lineup.

Good analysis... but I really like Donte Green. He is a raw athlete with perimeter skills and could learn to defend. We need scorers, and he looks like he could be a good one.

I just don't see Green as a good fit...I think he would be a good fit for a team that has say a Kobe or someone like that but Green is going to struggle mightly to defend the 3 position in the NBA...Can you see him guarding a guy like Pierce, TMac, LBJ, etc...Or even some younger ones like Jeff Green, Kevin Durant, etc...

I just can't see it...At this point I would have to hear a great workout or something, but I just don't see him fitting here and playing alongside LBJ as he is the main 3, and Green isn't really the creator type...

It would just be nice to draft someone in the first round that can friggin' contribute. Aside from the franchise, our 1st rounders have been deplorable for the past 8-9 years. I liked the Shannon Brown pick at the time, but he never panned out. At least Boobie eases that one a little, but Luke Jackson, Wagner, Diop, Langdon, Mihm...God that's depressing to rattle off. The last good NBA player we selected in round 1 (aside from the obvious) was Andre Miller in '99.

I know you typically can't typically expect greatness picking #19, but teams have done well at that spot or lower recently...2002- Tayshaun (#23), 2003- David West (#18), Diaw (#21), Barbosa (#28), Josh Howard (#29), 2004- Kevin Martin (#26), so they're out there, you just gotta find and develop them.

Cavs to take a break, regroup Team executives will wait a few weeks before doing a postmortem on season
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, May 20, 2008
INDEPENDENCE: After the loss Sunday in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, LeBron James signaled that the Cavaliers aren't where they need to be to win a league championship.
''If that means some personnel changes that need to happen, then so be it,'' he said Sunday. ''The teams around us in the league are continuing to get better.''
The Cavs organization acknowledged Monday at its practice facility that it needs to improve, but it declined to analyze in which areas.
Emotions run high after losing in the playoffs, especially when the Cavs had a chance to beat the Boston Celtics. The team positioned itself to win at least two games in the TD Banknorth Garden, only to fall apart.
''That's why evaluating today is not a really healthy thing to do,'' General Manager Danny Ferry said. ''And I think taking the next couple of weeks and trying to look at it a little more objectively is probably the best thing for us from a process standpoint.''

Burden is on Danny Ferry to make Cavaliers better Cavs will need trades for team to improve
By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist

Published on Tuesday, May 20, 2008
BOSTON: The New Orleans Hornets were the first team that he mentioned.
Then the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic.
All have gotten better, he said.
Which means the Cavaliers simply have to get better, too.
''If that means personnel changes . . . so be it,'' LeBron James said after the Cavs' season ended in a Game 7 loss Sunday to the Boston Celtics.
Statement made.
By season's end, the Cavs probably were a better team than a year ago ? but they were not good enough to get out of the Eastern Conference this time.
The roster that was remade at the trading deadline found a way to play together in the postseason and came within a couple of missed late shots of eliminating the Celtics.
The Cavs had to remake their roster because it wasn't working with Larry Hughes, who let it be known that he would not play in nor fit in the James-first system with the Cavs.
General Manager Danny Ferry made the best trades that he could, and he brought in Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak.

With Borowski comes normalcy He will close; Perez, Lewis, Betancourt resume old roles
By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, May 20, 2008

When Joe Borowski leaves the disabled list and returns as the Indians' closer ? as early as today and probably no later than Thursday ? manager Eric Wedge will go back to Plan A.
That is, the back end of the bullpen will be aligned with Rafael Betancourt as setup man, Jensen Lewis and Rafael Perez as the seventh-inning pitchers who also can work the eighth if Betancourt is unavailable.
But what about Masa Kobayashi, who pitched his way up the pecking order as sometime closer with Borowski nursing his strained triceps? Kobayashi succeeded in two save opportunities before failing to hold a lead on Saturday, when Adam Dunn homered in the ninth to give the Cincinnati Reds a 4-2 win.
Wedge still seems to have confidence that Kobayashi can make an impact late in games.
''I think Kobayashi just had a bad day,'' Wedge said. ''He's been pretty consistent for us.''
Wedge isn't sure how much an unfamiliarity with major-league hitters has affected Kobayashi, but it probably has been a factor.

LeBron supports further trading No reinvention of self is required, he says, just some fine-tuning
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, May 19, 2008
BOSTON: When last season ended, a month later and on a much grander stage, LeBron James said he thought that he needed to make major personal improvements for the Cavaliers to get better.
Sitting in the same position Sunday after the Game 7 loss to the Boston Celtics in the conference semifinals, James said he thinks the improvements now must come in personnel.
After losing to an extremely deep and recently massively upgraded Celtics team, James said he thinks the Cavs need to follow in their path, even after the 11-player trade that they pulled off in February.
''I think what we have is very good, but we need to continue to get better. We know that,'' James said. ''If that means some personnel changes that need to happen, then so be it. The teams around us in the league are continuing to get better.''
The Cavs could have as much as $30 million in expiring contracts to work with in trades. They also will have the No. 19 overall pick in the first round of the NBA Draft. As for free agency, they will have the $5.5 million midlevel exception and the $1.8 million biannual exception to use, though their payroll is so high. they probably will look at trade options first.
