Cavs 06-07 season thread

Costing Money
Feb 12 - Coach Mike Brown has been sending in video clips to the league office recently, believing LeBron James isn't getting as many foul calls as he should. He's taken another step, one that's personally costing him money. Brown has been getting on game officials more and more, seemingly getting technical fouls on purpose in an effort to make a point after what he believes are noncalls.

He had only gotten a handful of them in a season and a half, but earned three on the homestand alone, including one Sunday after getting one Friday night. Brown has the reputation of not getting emotional, so he's literally had to stomp onto the court to get hit with them. -- Akron Beacon-Journal

Lineup changes work, mostly

Cavs starting to click since ultra-deliberate coach shook things up

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - The only thing Mike Brown likes to change is his glasses.
As for everything else, the Cavaliers' second-year head coach is quite deliberate. That's why his decision seven games ago to shake up his lineup came only after many hours of consideration, film-watching, and consultation with basketball experts inside and outside the organization.

SPORTS: Cavs' offense has room for improvement
By Branson Wright

Kidd Not Going Anywhere
Feb 13 - Several team sources maintain the team captain (Jason Kidd), who turns 34 next month, is not going anywhere. But if the Nets were to pull the trigger and move the player who transformed the franchise, it would be more for business and financial reasons than for the players they'd get in return.

Kidd makes $18.084 million this season and has two years remaining at a combined $41.1 million. Assuming Vince Carter does not opt out and returns next season (there's no reason to think otherwise), he'll get $16.36 million. Richard Jefferson, after his $11.2 million this season, is on the books for four more years at $54.6 mil. -- New York Post

Rod Thorn, the team president, said he did not worry about the effect that trade reports could have on veterans like Kidd and Carter. He said they seemed to understand his philosophy of "if the right trade comes along, I'll trade anybody."

If the Nets decide to trade Kidd or Carter, who are each on the roster for the Eastern Conference for the All-Star Game on Sunday in Las Vegas, they will undoubtedly be signaling that they are looking to rebuild. -- New York Times

The Nets should not deal Jason Kidd or Vince Carter before next week's trade deadline, not when the offers around the league could fill a three-car garage with frayed and splintered junk. Rod Thorn needs to hold still now, needs to let this team make whatever run it can in an Eastern Conference that looks as wide open as a shooter working against a Boston Celtics zone. Then he needs to trade Richard Jefferson in the summer. -- Bergen Record

Cavs hit the road, ready for challenge

Varejao likely to fill in tonight for Ilgauskas in Utah

By George M. Thomas

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers view playing a Western Conference opponent as a challenge.
That's a good thing because they're likely to have their hands full with the Utah Jazz when the teams face off in Salt Lake City tonight.
In addition, they'll play the Jazz without center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who didn't practice or travel with the team due to personal reasons.

Knicks Eye Gooden
Feb 14 - There are whispers about the Knicks making a play for Cleveland power forward Drew Gooden. Or maybe they'll opt for a small forward along the lines of Milwaukee's Ruben Patterson or Sacramento's Ron Artest.

A potential Channing Frye-for-Gooden deal would have to include other players for salary-cap purposes. Gooden would give the Knicks a rugged power forward who can guard big men. David Lee has emerged as an elite rebounder, but he struggles to defend power forwards and small forwards. Frye is a big man who can knock down a shot, which is what makes him attractive to Cleveland. However, the Cavs would prefer to trade for a point guard. -- New York Daily News

Though Cleveland's Drew Gooden might fit nicely starting next to Eddy Curry in the Knicks' frontcourt, Curry said he's not thinking about who the Knicks might get to improve their chances at a playoff spot. "I'm just focusing on what we have here," Curry said. "I don't look to the outside to see how we can improve." -- Newsday
