Cavs 06-07 season thread

Going to the line 22 times: very nice.

Hughes back to his old self shooting 5-18, but since he was guarding Kobe, I'll let that slide. His ft shooting will not slide. Shooting 3-10 from the line is
pathetic, but maybe the back to back road game made him tired. It didn't seem to affect the rest of the team, they shot nearly 75%.

Every player that played double digit minutes score in double figures. Very good team effort.

15pts and 11 boards for Varejeo. Z who ?

Props to E Snow for 9-10 from the line.

I only made it through a little more than the first quarter, but I was happy to see Lebron look like Lebron again. He only took one outside shot in the first quarter. The Lakers must have been rolling the D toward Pav. :p

IMO, The pieces to build around:
LBJ obviously, Wild Thing, Gibby and Sasha. You have the franchise; Wild Thing is a ball of energy who has always been a monster on the boards and is developing a pretty damn solid offensive game; Gibby who looks like he could (fingers crossed) become a Tony Parker type of PG and Sasha, a slasher who is has a nice shot.

I'll admit that I've been very rough on the guys during the first 3 1/2 months, but I finally see a reason to get optimistic. I'm a lot more excited about the second half than I was 10 days ago. Seems to be unfolding much like last season did, where they got hot down the stretch. The difference is that now they have playoff experience. Could be fun to watch.

Pippen Wants To Play
Feb 16 - Scottie Pippen is seriously considering a comeback and hopes to play for a contending team in this season's playoffs.

"I'm thinking of trying to come back for the playoffs," Pippen said. "Something like the last two months of the season, somewhere I can come back and play limited minutes to start, play point forward for someone and build toward the playoffs. It's something I've been thinking about for the last three months."

"My knee is good," Pippen said. "I've been working out regularly, doing drills. I see my body like guys like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played till he was 42) and Robert Parish (who played until just short of 44). My body is lanky and flexible like theirs. That gives me some hope I can do it. -- Chicago Tribune

'I think I can really help teams like Miami and Cleveland,'' Pippen said. ''Detroit is a contender, too, but they are overstocked and probably have no place for a guy like me.

"I'm not going to be a nonstop high-flyer like I was in my prime. But I can still run. I can still dunk. But most of all, I know the game." -- Chicago Sun-Times

Too Pricey?
Feb 16 - Considering the tax threshold went up over $3 million for this season, figure on the dollar-for-dollar penalty phase to start at about $68 million for 2007-08.

Then consider that the guaranteed contracts of Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade, Jason Williams, Antoine Walker and Udonis Haslem put that Heat at $56 million in payroll for 2007-08.

Factor in the smaller guarantees for Michael Doleac, Alonzo Mourning, Dorell Wright and Wayne Simien and the 2007-08 payroll goes to $64.5 million. And that doesn't even get into being allowed to offer Jason Kapono about $5 million as the starting point for a new free-agent contract, or James Posey.

In other words, that's why the team is so reluctant to take on a Mike Bibby-like salary at next week's trading deadline, with the guard to earn $13.5 million next season. -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Maybe we should start a vbet on who Arenas calls out next?

If he was a superstar like Kobe, Wade, or Lebron than his name would be crucified on all the talk shows and national news and what not.

But he'll never be on that level, and I think that really bothers him.

We all know he wears number zero because thats how many minutes someone he would play in the NBA, so maybe he needs this as motivation or something.

Just imagine if it was Kobe, or a player like Ron Artest calling half the NBA out by the All Star break.

Sorry for my rambling.

Hughes delivers message on court

Offense in Jazz game shows he wants ball

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

LOS ANGELES - There was a bit of a flashback going on in the Cavaliers' loss to the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
Larry Hughes was driving and attacking the rim, getting to the foul line, and making a major impact on offense. It was the kind of performance, a season-high 33 points, that the Cavs expected to see much more often when he signed in 2005.

LOS ANGELES - LeBron James didn't look like a gent who needed a midseason break Thursday night. Neither did his teammates.
Led by a signature James performance, the Cavaliers gutted their way to an impressive 114-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in a game that didn't end until 1:45 a.m. EST. It was the Cavs' first victory at the Staples Center over the Lakers in eight years.

Jones predicts 3-point win

Cavs guard fighting flu, loss of rhythm heading into tonight's competition

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

LAS VEGAS - Damon Jones has waited for years, sometimes not too patiently, for a chance to compete in the 3-Point Shootout over All-Star weekend.
Now that it's here, tonight in fact at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center, he wishes he was in a little better form.
Jones has been fighting the effects of the flu over the past several days. After coming off the floor in the third quarter of the Cavaliers' victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night, Jones had to go to the locker room because he was suffering from the illness.

LeBron's Pippen could be Pippen

Former Jordan sidekick eyes comeback, Cavs

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

LAS VEGAS - One of the questions that has dogged LeBron James during his first four NBA seasons is who will become his perfect sidekick, ``his Scottie Pippen,'' as fans and pundits like to pose.
How about Scottie Pippen?
Using the All-Star festivities this weekend as a pedestal, the former Chicago Bulls great and running mate to Michael Jordan is making it known that he's attempting a comeback. And he's targeting the Cavs as a potential destination.

Gamble Paid Off
Feb 17 - Daniel Gibson hinged his immediate NBA future on a June 1 workout with the Cavaliers.

A little less than four weeks before the 2006 draft, after a session in which, by his estimation, he "missed like one shot," Gibson decided his future was set.

The point guard, who left the University of Texas after his sophomore season, would no longer work out for an NBA team (the Cavaliers and his hometown team, the Rockets, were the only clubs who got a first-hand look at Gibson).

"I was on my game that day," Gibson said of his workout at Quicken Loans Arena, which included Illinois players James Augustine and Dee Brown, "and I felt like if they had the opportunity to take me, they would." -- Willoughby News-Herald
