Prediction a little off for Cavaliers' Jones

Guard finishes in fifth at 3-Point Shootout. LeBron third in Skills

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

LAS VEGAS - Damon Jones burned bright, but too fast.
The slick-talking Cavaliers guard was unable to deliver on his guarantee of winning the 3-Point Shootout on Saturday night.
In fact, he was significantly closer to last. Jones was the most successful in the competition on the first rack, making 4-of-5, but he leveled off and finished with a score of 15. It left him fifth overall in the six-man competition.
Former Cavalier Jason Kapono won the event, scoring 24 points in the final round, to beat Gilbert Arenas (14) and Dirk Nowitzki (nine).

Are Cavaliers in dealing mood?

cavaliers CORNER
MIKE POPOVICH

The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching. Talks between general managers will heat up between now and 6 p.m. Thursday. They could lead to a flurry of deals or not much action at all.

What should Danny Ferry do to help improve the Cavaliers?

The armchair GMs have plenty of opinions. Finding a point guard seems to be the prevailing thought ? with Sacramento?s Mike Bibby and Philadelphia?s Andre Miller as the most popular choices.

To his credit the guys that beat him were putting up some un real #'s...

Probably one of the most highing scoring 3 point contest in history...

Yea, but he's always running his mouth about he's the worlds best shooter. He predicted a win in the contest. He has the highest score after the first rack (5), then only score 10 points on the following 4 racks. I just get tired of hearing how good he says he is. He's the most 1 dimensional player on the roster and for the month he's only hit 2 from downtown. Shoot a little better than 68% from the ft line before you call yourself the worlds best shooter.

As you can tell, I'm not a big fan.

I couldn't find an actual list. Not supposed to made public, but....

http://www.nba.com/bobcats/news/draft_central_draft_chatter.html

Ira Newble may have played his last game with the Cavaliers all because of next week's expansion draft. According to a list released by the Charlotte Observer, Newble, Kevin Ollie, Ruben Boumtje Boumtje and Jason Kapono were all left unprotected. At least one of the four could be gone.
The Cavaliers are in the thick of it and could be one of the teams trying to be creative with Charlotte. It is believed that they have left Kevin Ollie, Jason Kapono and Ira Newble unprotected, meaning Charlotte can take one of them.
In other news, several Cavs may not want to hear about being left unprotected for the Bobcats expansion draft on June 22. Today, the Cavs will submit to the league a list of eight protected players that currently are under contract. The list excludes free agents Eric Williams, Lee Nailon and Ruben Boumtje Boumtje.

The Bobcats will select a minimum of 14 players. They can select no more than one player from each team. Teams are not allowed to say whom they will protect, but Cavs players like Kevin Ollie, Ira Newble, Kedrick Brown and Jason Kapono may be left unprotected.

2003-2004 Cavs players:

Lebron James
Carlos Boozer
Z
McInnis
Eric Williams
Lee Nailon
Dejuan Wagner
Tony Battie
Kedrick Brown
Kevin Ollie
Ira Newble
Mateen Cleaves
Jason Kapono
Desagana Diop
Jelani McCoy

Eric Williams and Lee Nailon were FA's = unprotected.
Ollie, Newble, and Kapono were left unprotected.

That leaves:
Lebron James
Carlos Boozer
Z
Jeff McInnis
Dejuan Wagner
Tony Battie
Kedrick Brown
Mateen Cleaves
Desagana Diop
Jelani McCoy

Of these, I would figure it would be these 8 protected:
LBJ
Z
Carlos Boozer
Jeff McInnis
Tony Battie
Dejuan Wagner
Kedrick Brown
DeSagana Diop

Oops.

Honestly I don't think a guy like Kapano would make us that much better. I don't think that it is a good thing that he starts for the Heat.

He is a one dimensional player, and while he can shoot the 3 and spread the defense is a major lyability on the defensive end.

I think the more minutes that he plays the heat are going to struggle. Also I don't think that he will continue to shoot at the 55% clip that he is currently shooting at.

As for DJ, I think he is entertaining, and does a good job of keeping the guys upbeat...

Anyone remember who the Cavs protected in the expansion draft a few years ago?

While they did lose Kapono in the expansion draft, they did pick up Sasha from Charlotte to replace him. So, for as stupid as Paxson was in leaving Kapono unprotected, he at least got lucky in replacing him with Pavlovic
from Charlotte.

That is true. Pav was a good pickup, but I think there would have been room for both.

Thanks for the info Nasty. There are definitely a name or 2 on the protected list that shouldn't have been.

Cavs Need A Guard
Feb 20 - The Cavs are in the market for a guard, one who can handle the ball and can shoot a little. While they'd love to be able to get a player who could be a long-term fit, they also would take a short-termer that could buoy what they already have on the roster.

According to league sources, the Cavs have made everyone on their roster available, with the exception of LeBron James.

But unless they feel it is a slam-dunk move, they won't want to disturb their core.

The Cavs are expected to take a hard look and even perhaps make a hard sell on Scottie Pippen, who wants to make a comeback. -- Akron Beacon-Journal

There are plenty of quality point guards available. The Nets have shopped Jason Kidd, Sacramento's Mike Bibby can opt out of his deal at the end of the season and if the Knicks don't buy out Steve Francis, he could be available. The Cavs have lukewarm interest in Memphis' Damon Stoudamire, Charlotte's Brevin Knight and Phoenix's Marcus Banks. -- Cleveland Plain Dealer

Exactly. He's Damon Jones without the mouth.

He would not (nor should he start) for this Cavs team.

I'd prefer to have guys who can shoot the 3 (even if at a somewhat lower clip) and do other things like slash (Pavlovic) or rebound (Marshall), because when the go cold from outside they can still contribute.

Exactally...

As for the trade talk and the Cavs needing a guard, I don't want them to make a deal just to make a deal.

Unless they can get someone like Bibby or Kidd, I am all for keeping this team together the way they have been playing, with Boobie as the starter and Snow coming off the bench, and I think we found the type of guys we were searching for on our bench in Boobie and Sasha...

;m really happy with Damon Jones' minutes getting eaten up....come playoff time he's such a liability on the court...i really feel he was thebiggest reason we lost to detroit...he just couldn't give productive minutes and couldn't guard anybody on Detroit...we wewre always out of position trying to cover his mistakes or Billups would just flat out abuse him...I'd also rather not make a trade just to make a trade, especially since Gibson is playing this well...i also think Z will play a very important role in the playoffs and Mike Brown has done a decent job of limiting his minutes this year...I really hope we maintain this up-tempo system b/c it fits our players styles the best and I think we have the right parts to make it work...it's when we turn every possesion into a half-court slug it out/execution based offense that this team sucks
