Cavs 06-07 season thread

coaching, coaching coaching.

how many coaches have won nba titles in the last 50 years?
how many in the past 20?

since what 1985 only one coach has just one nba title, pretty telling if you ask me...
(the others have atleast two titles to their names)

...and that guy with just one title is Larry Brown. He's no slouch.

Magic, Kareem, Worthy
Bird, McHale, DJ, Parrish
Hakeem, Drexler, Cassell, Horry
Shaq, Kobe
Shaq, DWade
MJ, Pippen, Rodman
Isiah, Rodman (great coaching job my Daly)

Coaches are indeed nice, but talent is much more important.

The problem with this off season for the Cavs is that they are going to clear 5 contracts for $6.7 mil, but they are going to have to use most of that to resign Varejao. Next year Wesley is the only contract up, but they will have to use that plus some to resign Gibson. Out of the roster the Cavs currently have the only players that I see them offering new contracts to without a significant pay cut are Lebron, Varejao, Gooden, and Gibson. Brown (hopefully will move up to the must sign group after next season), Pavlovic, Dwayne Jones, and Larry Hughes could be back for the right price. Z will retire or be gone when this contract is up. Pollard, Snow, Damon Jones, Wesley, and Newble will be gone at the end of their current contracts. Wesley's contract isn't bad for the Cavs. He is making less than 2 mil a year and can be Eric Snow with a shot when he is playing well. Gibson is the PG of the future and hopefully Brown can be the SG of the future. I would love for the Cavs to keep Pavlovic if they could do it for < 3 mil a season. Once he gets it to click he will be a guy that can nail 3's and take the ball to the hoop. On the bright side the Cavs should have some cap room in 4 years when Lebron's contract is up. If they are lucky they should be able to bring in a big FA to replace Z and Hughes.
The Cavs biggest problem trying to make a move now is that they don't have much to bargain with. The only players that other teams would want are Gooden, Varejao, Gibson, and maybe the guys with expiring contracts. There is no way the Cavs are going to give up Varejao and Gibson unless they get an All-Star type of player i.e. Gooden, Varejao, and Hughes for KG, which I doubt either team would want to do.

LeBron to Participate in 2007 PlayStation Skills Challenge

NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2007
Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade will defend his PlayStation Skills Challenge title against three of the league's biggest stars on Feb. 17 as part of NBA All-Star Saturday Night at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The competitors hoping to deny Wade's quest for a repeat are the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant, the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James and the Phoenix Suns' Steve Nash.

The PlayStation Skills Challenge was introduced at NBA All-Star 2003 in Atlanta and consists of four players competing in a two-round timed ?obstacle course? consisting of dribbling, passing and shooting stations. All players must observe basic NBA ball-handling rules while completing the course. The two players with the fastest times from the first round advance to the finals with the order of competition determined by inverse order of the first round times. At the discretion of the referee, television instant replay may be consulted for clarification of rules compliance.

Wade, who defeated James in the finals of the 2006 PlayStation Skills Challenge in Houston, is tied with Bryant for third in the NBA in scoring, averaging 28.4 points per game. Nash, who won the event in 2005 in Denver, currently leads the league in assists with 11.8 per game. James, who was the leading vote-getter for this year's All-Star game, is seventh in the league in scoring at 27.2 points per game.

The PlayStation Skills Challenge will be televised live nationally as part of the NBA All-Star Saturday Night, which will also feature the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk and Haier Shooting Stars. TNT and ESPN Radio?s national coverage will begin at 8 p.m. EST from the Thomas & Mack Center. The NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 18, will air live on TNT, ESPN Radio and in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

I still want to see him in the dunk contest...

LeBron considers sitting out few games to rest sore toe

CLEVELAND -- The most famous big toe in town needs pampering, and LeBron James just might give it some.

The All-Star forward said Monday he'll consider sitting out Cleveland's next few games to rest his sore right toe, which he injured on a recent road trip and aggravated during Sunday's game against Phoenix.

After missing Friday's game at Philadelphia, James returned and scored 30 points in 42 minutes against the Suns, but he re-injured the toe during the fourth quarter of the Cavaliers' 115-100 loss.

CLEVELAND - The definition of the Phoenix Suns' dominance can take so many different forms.
How about this one: The Cavaliers played reasonably good basketball Sunday afternoon with a gutty performance from their star and a radical game plan from their coach, and they still got blown out of their own gym.
The Suns' mastery simply overwhelmed the Cavs' artistry en route to a 115-100 demonstration.

Cavaliers game day

LeBron toes the line; his toe is not fine

Star forward aggravates sprain in loss to Suns, might miss more time

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - LeBron James gave the national television audience and the sellout crowd at Quicken Loans Arena what it wanted on Sunday but not without a cost.
James laced up his Nikes and played despite not being sure his sprained right big toe was ready. He performed at a high level, scoring 30 points in 42 minutes, but he re-injured the toe during the fourth quarter of the loss to the Phoenix Suns. His status for the near future is now questionable.

"There are still a lot of ballgames to play," he said. "We're still right where we want to be. It's all about getting to the playoffs. Once you get to the playoffs it doesn't matter if you're a No. 1 seed or eighth seed, it's best out of seven. We want to get home-court advantage of course, but we have to keep getting better."

this quote from the above LBJ article shows that this team just doesn't get it. there is definately veteran leadership missing here. to even allow this line of thinking is embarassing.

CLEVELAND ? Hey, losing to the Phoenix Suns is no disgrace, right? When a team comes into town having won 16 in a row, it?s only natural to assume the next opponent will be victim No. 17. you thinking.
This was nine wins in a row for Phoenix on the road. The Cavs have lost three in a row at home. They are 10-13 on the road. They have lost six of their past eight games.

With LeBron missing some games, it's going to increase the need for a true point guard. Hopefully, Brown gives some good pt to Gibson to see what he can do when running the offense without LBJ there to carry the load. The games he's played 20 minutes, he's been first or second on the team in assists.

It will be interesting to see who steps up their game to compensate for LBJ's absence. Alot of them are used to standing around waiting for him to run the offense. I'm wondering if Hughes will start driving to the hole more. I fully expect him to play well without LeBron.

I'd like to see Wild Thing shoot the ball more, maybe 10 shots a game. He can take it to the hole pretty well for a big man, and is pretty good with his left hand also.

Jones' game won't ever change. He'll come in and heave it. I can't remember a guard that drives as little as him. No wonder the experiment at the point for him last year was so miserable.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing how some of the guys play knowing the offense will be so different.

BTW Gibson is starting tonight instead of Snow. If Lebron is out I will like to see what Gibson, Hughes, and Pav can do.

Gibson to start instead of Snow

Coach Brown to try boosting offense by changing lineup tonight against Golden State Warriors

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Since he has been the Cavaliers' coach, Mike Brown has never set a starting lineup without Eric Snow in it. That is about to change.
A team source said Brown plans to start rookie Daniel Gibson at point guard tonight when the Cavs host the Golden State Warriors. Snow has started 139 consecutive games for the Cavs, including playoffs, dating to the end of the 2004-05 season. The team is 83-57 with him as a starter.
