Cavs 06-07 season thread

Cavs' Hughes could be out hurt

Favoring right ankle has left leg in pain. He might miss some games

By Brian Windhorst

LOS ANGELES - ``Larry Hughes'' and ``precaution'' are being used again in sentences by the Cavaliers, which calls for another word commonly used in this space: ``reality.''
In reality, this is probably just the way it is going to be for the Cavs in Hughes' tenure. He's a quality player, one who has no doubt lifted the Cavs' play when he's been on the court during the past season and a half, but his body is simply fragile. He's going to break bones and tweak joints at a high rate, the results of a 6-foot-5, 180-pound guy playing in such a physically demanding game. His resume is chock full of these injuries.

Eventually Hughes is going to stop getting injured. Much like a guy like Z who couldnt stay healthy in the first part of his career, while one injury led to another. Lets hope that once he gets back from this injury he can stay healthy. He has had some bad luck and tryed to play thru the injuries, but they always seem to bite him in the ass.

As for the trade rumors. Not sure where Blake would fit on this team. He is a pretty good player, but I don't think he is going to knock Snow out of the starting lineup and I love the potential of Gibby too much to bring Blake over here.

As for the Magette rumors, if for the right people I am all over that move. He is a great defender, he will get to the rack and averages 10 free throws a game so he really gets to the hole. I think if we can get him and Hughes comes back healthy we will have a very good rotation and I think LBJ would be able to get more rest if we can leave guys like Magette and Hughes on the floor together.

Magette has come off the bench for the Clippers so with Hughes back he would probably do the same here as well, but if Hughes does continue to get hurt Magette would step into the starting role.

Lets just hope that Ferry can make it work.

Rest easy, Hughes expected back

Cavs guard misses game to rehab thigh

Monday, January 15, 2007 Branson Wright

Plain Dealer Reporter
Los Angeles- The latest injury to Cavaliers guard Larry Hughes is not cause for major concern. Neither Hughes nor the team expects him out long.
"This is just precautionary," said Cavs coach Mike Brown. "We'll make sure he gets some rest and continue to rehab."

Apparently we AREN'T interested in Steve Blake:

"There have been some reports the Cavs showed interest in using a trade exception to acquire point guard Steve Blake, now that he's been moved to the Denver Nuggets in the Boykins deal. These are false; no deal is being discussed at the moment. Blake visited the Cavs two years ago when he was a free agent, but left town without an offer."-Brian Windhorst

Magette would be a good pickup, but I don't see the Cavs getting it done. The Cavs would probably give up a mix of Pavlovic, Newble, Wesley and they would have to throw in one of the rookies for that to have a chance of working, but I bet the Clippers wouldn't give him up for anything less than Gooden or Varejao. Last year I would have been fine giving up Gooden, but his offensive game has improved greatly this year. Magette has 3 years left on his contract, which is the same as Jones, Snow, Gooden, and Marshall. Lebron, Hughes, and Z have 4 years left. Out of all the players on the team the only guys that I see the Cavs keeping for the next round of contracts are Lebron, Varejao, Gooden, Pavlovic (for the right price), and the rookies. Magette would be on that list if they had him. Varejao and Pavlovic are restricted FA's at the end of this season and I'm guessing the Cavs will do whatever it takes to keep Wild Thing.

This is a fun trade site to play around with if you want to see if something would work.

I follow and agree with what you are trying to say.

I would hate to see Gooden go, but if means getting Magette I would strongly have to think about it. I think Wild thing and Donyell can hold down the PF spot and we could use Pollard some. He was a decent player, but hasnt seen time this year for whatever reason.

Getting Magette would be huge for this team IMO. He would make this team so much better defensively and he ability to get to the rim and get to the line would help this team out when we are struggling to score. Also teams will not be able to help as much off of him as they can some other guys.

Somehow it slipped my mind earlier. Would the Clippers really want Gooden when they already have Brand and Kamen? I bet Drew would be pissed to be relegated to first off the bench. I guess 3 bigs is better than 2 so it would probably be a good move for them, just shitty for Gooden. Insurance if they trade Gooden and guarding Shaq are probably the 2 reasons that the Cavs signed Pollard since I'm sure he wasn't planning on riding the bench the whole season when he signed

I agree, but who else are the Clippers going to want from our team, b/c I don't see them wanting a combo of Pavs, Newble, Snow, DJ b/c those are the only guys I can see us getting rid of other than Gooden.

Hughes doesn?t feel he?ll be out too long
Tuesday, January 16, 2007
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEVELAND Neither the Cleveland Cavaliers nor injured guard Larry Hughes expect him to be out for long this time. Hughes missed Saturday?s game against the Los Angeles Clippers because of tendinitis in his left quadriceps, the large muscle in the front of the thigh. He is listed as day-to-day.

Gooden would be the guy that the Clippers might want and the Cavs might be willing to give up. The only reason that the Clippers would take a mix of the other guys would be to get a promising rookie and clear out salary since Pavs and Newble expire after this season. Noted the Clippers want to win so they probably aren't in a position to want to clear out salary with little in return.

At this point if we could get Magette I would be willing to give up Brown...

He isnt seeing the floor and with a combo of Hughes and Magette Pavs isnt going to see the floor much either, so might as well get rid of them if you can get a better player out of it.

Dominating with defense

Cavs' recent success attributed to executing Mike Brown's system, philosophy

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

SEATTLE - The process has been slow and tedious at times but, love it or hate it, the Cavaliers are morphing into the sort of lock-down defensive team coach Mike Brown swore he'd construct the day he was hired in June of 2005.
Their defensive statistics have been improving since Brown took over, but they are just now really developing a style of play. It isn't always pretty and it isn't always totally effective, but take a step back and look at it with perspective and it is becoming signature. The Cavs are a very good defensive team and, of late, a dominant one in the second half.
