Cavs off balance

LeBron, Ilgauskas out of sync with game plan, but reserves shining

I'm trying to figure out what it will take for the Cavaliers to become an elite team. Don't be fooled by their 14-8 record heading into Saturday night. The front office and coaches know they should have a few more wins, just as they know the schedule has been favoring them. At best, they will tell you that things are going ``just OK,'' and they know there's a lot of room for improvement.
? Here's the good: General Manager Danny Ferry and former GM Jim Paxson have assembled a deep roster with some real talent. Keep in mind it was Paxson who pulled off the Tony Battie for Anderson Varejao and Drew Gooden deal with the Orlando Magic after Carlos Boozer bolted for the Utah Jazz. Some fans don't like Eric Snow, but the Cavs picked him up from the Philadelphia 76ers for Kedrick Brown and Kevin Ollie. This is not to defend everything about Paxson, but he made a couple of important moves in his final season.

Sloppy quarter stymies Cavaliers

Magic's 26-8 first-half rally enough for victory

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

ORLANDO - Mr. Hyde returned.
Take the Cavaliers out of the friendly confines of Quicken Loans Arena, and things quickly go awry.
It is one thing to lose on the road, it is another to be rendered toothless.
For the Cavs, it has been both this season, and that is the roadblock between them and elite NBA status.
No doubt Saturday night's game was a challenge. The Orlando Magic are one of the Eastern Conference's best teams and one of the NBA's finest at home.

Poof! Lead is gone

Cavs' edge magically vanishes in second
Sunday, December 17, 2006 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter

Orlando, Fla.- Home games for the Cavaliers have meant a free flow of transition basketball mixed in with some superb defense, clutch shooting and an ease that has produced the most home-court wins in the Eastern Conference.
Games on the road are another matter.
"I think [on the road] we kind of press too much, and at home we just play," the Cavs' LeBron James said. "On the road we press too hard to not make a mistake. Once we figure that out and let loose, we'll be fine."

Varejao drawing comparisons to 'The Worm'

Monday, December 18, 2006 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter

There are a few obvious differences, but there is no mistake that Anderson Varejao's high-energy style of play brings back memories of Dennis Rodman.
There is the height difference - Varejao is about three inches taller than Rodman.
Rodman had multi-color hairstyles while Varejao has light brown floppy curls.

CLEVELAND -- One wouldn't have known it in the second quarter of the Orlando game on Saturday, but the Cavaliers' offense might be better equipped for success in the postseason.

That's the opinion of Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who is slowly but surely emerging from a season-low funk.

Don't tell anyone: LeBron's tired

Brown, Cavaliers need to look into ways to get James recharged -- and for this never to happen again

By Brian Windhorst

He simply won't concede it publicly because it is considered an excuse or a challenge to his manhood, but LeBron James is tired.
He has told those close to him that his energy level is down, that he's getting fatigued quicker during the past several weeks. He didn't really need to say so; it is obvious to all the fans he has won over with his dominating play.

LeBron weighs in on brawl

Players must take responsibility, he says

By George M. Thomas

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony and others involved in a Madison Square Garden melee Saturday night will have to suck it up and live with the consequences, some members of the Cavaliers say.
On Monday, NBA Commissioner David Stern suspended Anthony (15 games), his teammates J.R. Smith (10 games) and Nene (one game) and New York Knicks Nate Robinson (10 games), Mardy Collins (six games), Jared Jeffries (four games) and Jerome James (one game). The players were involved in a brawl that spilled over into the Garden crowd.
In addition, the league fined each team $500,000.

I don't understand how LBJ is tired.

He isnt playing near the minutes he was last year, and his overall play hasnt been at the level of his first 3 years. He isnt taking it to the rack as much and dealing with the contact that might cause him to wear down. Also we are only a couple months into the season we still have 5+ to go...

He's tired from doing nothing but play ball for the past year and 2 months. This happens to most of the guys who do the whole Team USA thing. Lebron needs to take next summer off and the rest of the team needs to use this season to grow and be more than the 4 guys on the court with Lebron. They should be able to beat the bad teams even without Lebron. I just hope that Lebron breaks through the wall sooner rather than later.

I understand that, but he isnt playing anywhere near what he was playing last year in terms of minutes and is getting quite a few rests.

Melo was in the same boat, but he came out gunning this year, even tho he can't continue that, but I think LBJ should be in better shape than Melo.

As for the rest of the team, I think Hughes helps alot and with Gibson and Jones scoring that helps. I still think Brown needs to keep Sasha and Brown as part of the rotation...

At least Cavs are in East

Team inconsistent, conference pathetic
Wednesday, December 20, 2006 Jodie Valade
Plain Dealer Reporter
Among the Cavaliers' woeful road record, their inconsistent play and their up-and-down battle for victories this season, there remains one gleaming bright spot: No one else in the Eastern Conference is much better.
