Cavs 06-07 season thread

For those in favor of LBJ putting up the last shot rather than dishing to Marshall, this probably sums up your feelings:

Mike Ricordati (about ten minutes ago): "I mean, when did Donyell Marshall become Sam Perkins?"

Larry is going to have to spend the rest of the series on Rip.

Agreed...

The thing that irks me is that the fact they went for the win instead of the tie, leads me to believe that in their heads they don't have the confidence to beat the Pistons, and they were trying to steal one...Yeah the Pistons played bad, but we outplayed them most of the game, besides the Pistons small runs they kept putting on to stay in the game and eventually took the lead when the offense stayed in the locker room at half time...

I actually think Larry should stay on Billups. I'd much rather have Rip going off than Billups going off. Whenever Billups gets in a grove, the Pistons seem to go on some pretty big runs, and considering how low scoring these games are going to be, the Cavs can't afford to let that happen. I'd keep it like it is.

Lebron needs to assert himself early and force the refs to make the calls. If he's aggressive, he's nearly unstoppable.

I'd also like to see Andy push around Sheed a little bit, try and get in his head, maybe get a T of two.

I can't stress enough how worthless Eric Snow has been this postseason. He can only see the floor if we're up twenty plus points and in the final minutes. He doesn't facilitate the offense. He's a horrid shooter and finisher(TWO MISSED LAYUPS!!!!). He turns the ball over. He's a disaster at this point in his career. Just keep him in his warmups and have him talk to Lebron about specific situations. Let him coach, don't let him play.

We need a three point shooter to emerge. That has to be either Gibson or Marshall. One of them has to show the ability to consistently hit threes off the bench. I'd wager on Marshall since he brings more overall(though he's poor defensively). Either way, one of them needs to step up so we can at least bring one offensive threat off the bench.

Lebron is the key though. All this other stuff hinges on him performing. Here's hoping he's heard all this criticism and he comes out on fire in game two.

As for the last play. He made the right decision. That would have been a near impossible layup. Marshall was wide open in the corner(his favorite spot). You make that pass EVERY time, no exceptions. With that said, Lebron needed to be more aggressive earlier in the fourth. Draw fouls, take the crowd out of the game, get some momentum as we entered the final minutes. You can't fault him for that final play. That was the best decision and it shows his intelligence and his faith in his teamates. Just imagine if we had a Kapono or Barry or Kerr like player on this team. That and a PG are the one thing this team is missing IMO.

I disagree. I think it was absolutely the right move. The shot just didn't go for Marshall. It happens.

I for one am encouraged by last night's game. They were playing on the road against a tough team, and were in a position to win it despite getting hardly any scoring from their star player. I think they have a good chance again on Thursday, then they come back to Cleveland.

I think the Cavs will have to win two games in Detroit to win this series. I know the Cavs are good at home, but I don't think they have the makeup to fiercely defend their home court. I think the Cavs can take two in Detroit though, but they'll have get the one on Thursday night.

ESPN radio was practically scripted today, when both Cowherd & Patrick praised LBJ, insisted that he be compared to Magic not MJ, etc.

As DP stated, had the shot gone in everyone would be praising LBJ's superior court vision and passing ability.

He also pointed out that everyone who wants him to be MJ needs to remember who made some of the biggest shots in Bulls history... Paxson & Kerr.

There really is no debate. You ALWAYS make that pass.

I mean, ask any coach, player, analyst or anyone that knows a thing about basketball whether they'd rather have someone take a contested layup with their off hand or a wide open three by the team's best three point shooter(or second best), and every single person will say the three point shot. It's the right decision and it shows that Lebron hasn't felt the pressure to force any game winning shots where he's triple teamed.

I also agree with a poster above that last night's game was encouraging. You have to figure that Sasha or Gibson or Marshall will eventually have a good shooting night, and that Snow will eventually remember how to make a layup, and that Lebron will eventually go off. The fact that we were within three with Lebron having a pretty pedestrian game is incredibly encouraging. Z and Andy were really the only players that played out of their minds, so it wasn't like everyone but Lebron was having a great game.

I think we take game two by 10 points.

Same thought here. Marshall hit 6 3 pointers against the Nets to help the cav's win that game. I wish the ESPN office was in Iraq:biggrin:

Pistons shoot down Cavs

Billups fires clutch shot, LeBron can't find answer

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, left, is fouled by Detroit Pistons defender Carlos Delfino, right, as he tries to drive to the basket during first-half action in game one of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Monday, May 21, 2007, in Auburn Hills, Michigan. AUBURN HILLS, MICH. - Reputations made in the playoffs were lived up to in the playoffs Monday night.
Chauncey Billups has earned his nickname, ``Mr. Big Shot'' by doing just that, taking and making big shots when it counts the most.
It meant an awful lot in the closing minutes of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, and ``Big Shot'' Billups outperformed his novice counterpart Cavaliers in the Detroit Pistons' 79-76 victory .
Meanwhile, LeBron James stuck to his oft-stated preference as well, a position he will surely have to defend in the coming days. With a chance to answer Billups in the final seconds, James gave up the ball to a teammate. The consequences this time put the Cavs in a 1-0 series hole.
Billups nailed a defining 3-pointer with 1:52 left that gave the Pistons the lead for good in a back-and-forth game that the underdog Cavs led late in the fourth quarter.

Cavs shoot themselves in the foot

By Terry Pluto

AUBURN HILLS, MICH. - Some fans will blame Donyell Marshall for missing that wide-open 3-pointer from the corner.
A shot that Marshall made like a layup in Game 6 at New Jersey.
A shot that could have given the Cavaliers an upset in Detroit.
A shot that, instead, banged off the rim.
Final score: Pistons 79, Cavaliers 76.
Welcome to the Eastern Conference Finals, where the Pistons have a 1-0 lead in this best-of-seven series.

Cavaliers game day

Ilgauskas plays well but is disappointed

NBA Draft Lottery is tonight in Secaucus, N.J.

By Brian Windhorst and George M. Thomas

Beacon Journal sportswriters

AUBURN HILLS, MICH. - Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas will take little solace in his double-double in Monday night's 79-76 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
Ilgauskas, able to work in space, hit for 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the defeat.
``I got some good looks. They paid so much attention to LeBron (James) that I was able to pick and pop and find an open spot on the floor,'' he said.
Sitting in front of his locker, he spoke like someone who knew that the Cavaliers let one slip away.
``I missed a shot wide open, and Donyell missed a shot. So in a perfect world, we might have won by 10 or 12 points,'' he said. ``But, first game, we came out and gave ourselves a chance. I'm disappointed we lost, but we've got a lot of bullets left.''

I think your statement needs a qualifier. IMO, the pass was the right play because they were down by 2. If it had been a tie-game or a 1-point game, it would have been a better play for for LeBron to go up strong with the ball.

I don't understand the hate for Larry, I can understand Snow, but it has been the move of Hughes to PG along with the emergence of Sasha that have made up for the inconsistency of scoring from the big guys this year...

I understand that he isnt the best shooter, he shoots around 38% and yes there are guys that shoot better than that in the league, and yes he makes a lot of money, but he has helped this team on both ends of the court, and it is not all about shooting percentages that make the player...

He has said that the finger he hurt last year effects his shot at times, and towards the end of the season he found a way to not let it effect his shot...

I also understand that sometimes when he is not hitting he will keep taking shots much like this past game, but when no one else is doing anything and he is there open, he is going to take the shot...he seems to be the most aggressive person on offense in this series...

I agree...This team is better than the 50 win season they had and the debacles against shitty teams, and the lack of any type of killer instinct...

The hate comes from the fact that he's simply not a good outside shooter, yet he continually tries to shoot his way out of it. He's a driver and needs to do that more and shoot the long jumpers less.

Of course, I posted after his 3-17 night so I was a little pissed.
