If this was happening at any Big Ten university, there would be serious pressure for a house cleaning and reforms coming from alumni, state legislators, the major newspapers and the business community. Whether you want to admit it or not, it's a different world with different priorities up here.

Michigan. Basketball.
Michigan. Football.

Indiana Basketball....

didn't Illinois get slapped for something too?

Michigan did a pretty thorough house cleaning in the wake of the Fab 5 scandal, and there was PLENTY of uproar from alumni, faculty and major newspapers. As for their football problems this year, it really was pretty small potatoes and, to be brutally honest, quite similar to what Woody got tagged for in the early 70s when he started Spring practice a week early. Nonetheless, both the school and Detriot newspapers did the exact opposite of fall in line behind the program.

The Indiana thing was just plain weird for a school that had never been in trouble for either basketball or football. In the end, they did clean out the basketball program and bring in someone with a very clean rep. I'd also use IU as an example of a school firing their most famous and successful coach for off-field incidents that would have been swept under the carpet in the SEC.

Minnesota completely cleaned house in the wake of the Clem Haskins scandal, again with plenty of backing from various constituencies within the university and around the state.

Look at how we handled the Jim O'Brien problem.

I'm not saying that Big Ten schools never stray. I'm saying that they operate in a different culture--both internally and in their states--that prevent the balls out, if yer not cheatin' yer not tryin' culture of the SEC.

I agree that most fans in the south take their college football a little more serious and personal than most fans in the north. That said, some of these sweeping stereotypical comments are ridiculous. Folks in the south are no more racist or bigoted than folks in Ohio (or anywhere else in the world). If you think otherwise you watch too much CNN and MSNBC.

We're not saying they are more racist or bigoted. We're just saying their priorities regarding their state universities leaves a lot to be desired.

I've lived in the middle of SEC country over 20 years. I agree wholeheartedly with this assessment. While a large number of OSU fans do not have a connection to the university, I would say here a large number of fans don't even know there's supposed to be a university involved in the equation. The reputation of the university is the last thing on their minds.

Your best argument against the idea that racism and bigotry are as prevalent in the north as in the south is that I live in the south?

Um no. Its because I live in the south. Ergo I don't need CNN or MSNBC to fill my mind with stereotypes. All I have to do is walk out of my house.

Was up early feeding my 9 week old and happened to catch a piece on sCam on the worldwide leader. It was about 80% a puff piece interviewing his high school athletic director talking about how great he is. Interviewing his JC coach talking about how great of a person he is. It played an interview about the laptop deal where sCam was apologizing and saying how immature he was. Then they bring up the pay for play scandal and close with the quote from the attorney guarenteeing that sCam did not take any money.

I was waiting for someone to at least say something to this affect, "That is great to hear, but the allegations surrounding sCam has always been about his father taking money not him."
