Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Southeastern Conference could fine Auburn if quarterback Cam Newton isn't available for postgame interviews following the league championship game.

The SEC requires all coaches and student athletes to be made available to reporters after the title game. League spokesman Charles Bloom said Tuesday Commissioner Mike Slive can fine a school for violating that policy, but has never had to do so. Bloom said the amount is at the commissioner's discretion.

The Tigers (No. 1 BCS, No. 2 AP) meet South Carolina (No. 19 BCS, No. 18 AP) Saturday.

Newton hasn't spoken to the media since Nov. 9. The NCAA is investigating his recruitment after allegations that Newton's father wanted $180,000 to sign with Mississippi State.

Coach Gene Chizik declined to answer Tuesday when asked if Auburn would abide by SEC rules.
As much as I'm loving this clusterfuck and watching Auburn side-step everything that has to do with it, it's ridiculous that they could be fined if one of their players doesn't feel like talking to the media. Reminds me of when the Fiesta Bowl officials got their panties in a twist when TP wasn't at their media day two years ago.

Not to go too far OT, but I find it absurd that a supposed amateur athlete could be required to speak to the commercial media. I understand that the veil of amateurism is increasingly thin, but making you dance for ESPN is pretty blatant.

technically, it said Auburn had to make him "available to the media". So I guess he could be present and answer every question with a "no comment".

The fact that Auburn is obligated to make him "available" at all is what's absurd about it.

I agree.....I can understand that the team has to make 2 or 3 players available.....but I too can't understand how they can make a particular player available. What if he has an exam ? Or is sick ? Ridiculous. Of course this is the SEC we're talking about.

Come back after your conference championship game rules are set and let's see if there is anything in yours that addresses the subject. Up till now you haven't had the need to cater to a network that is televising a conference championship game and paying through the nose to do it.

There are rules that require the coach to make appearances to earn a heavy chunk of his contract, and I believe they include making players available at the presser and in the locker room.

I have serious doubts they can demand that Tressel bring someone like Pryor to the media day if JT is concerned that he is not displaying the maturity and restraint to handle such a thing.
