I've never been to Auburn.....is there anything in that town other than the college? If this whole thing ends up being true and they kill not only the football team, but also take away their accreditation, is that going to kill the economy there? Is that something that "they" (whoever "they" are) would let happen?

Sounds as though the bulk of economic activity in Auburn, AL isn't exactly on the up-and-up anyway. :p

I've been many times when I was younger. To answer the first part, no there is shit else around hat area but the school. Economically it would be like taking PSU out of HV.

On a side note from what I recall of the place, if they were to lose their accreditation or anything else that resulted in a reduction of their rather substantial co-ed production then we as a species are all the real losers in this deal.

I'd have to imagine that even the most die-hard "football uber alles" alum or student would be inclined to sign on to the class action were they to lose their accreditation.

I have to believe that even a bottom-feeder SEC school's economic impact is far greater than that of its football program. They might not pull in Big Ten levels of research funding, but I'm sure that it still is more than the athletic department.

I'm guessing that some arrangement would be worked out where a combination of the state, feds and faculty took complete control of the university, dismissed the current trustees, admins and athletic leadership in exchange for a death row clemency part of which might very well be suspending their football program for a few years.

I'm not saying the above will happen, but it's preferable to losing accreditation. I just wonder whether these 'necks have enough basic sense to recognize that fact.

The NCAA does not give the "death penalty" any more. It is not a written policy, but it is their current and future policy.
Why? The NCAA realizes that the SEC is dirty but doesn't want to cook the Golden Goose that is the very profitable and powerful SEC. Just look at how much USC was guilty of and there is your example of what is in store for Auburn as a possible punishment.

I don't think the NCAA will give Auburn the death penalty. I do see a suspension of the football program being on the table in any negotiations for a last minute reprieve of losing accreditation. In that case, the state would probably fight it, but the feds, faculty and accreditation agency would ultimately win.

It wouldn't be quite as bad as PSU. The proximity to Phenix City/Columbus alone makes a huge difference.

Off the top of my head Briggs & Stratton also has a plant in Opelika & a couple of companies have distribution centers there but yeah AU is definitely the driving force economically for Auburn-Opelika.

This is dead on. You're not going to find your next Governor from Auburn, but it has other strengths. AU's primarily a Agriculture school - and it's has the #1 Veterinary School in the South.

With as rural as Alabama is most areas, AU would almost certainly be saved by the state, if for this program alone. Good nursing school too.

The school and boosters just dropped a shit load of money on a sparkling new basketball arena - check out these artist drawings. Scheduled to open next year I think.

This is in comparison to the 41 year old current arena - The ShitStain Center
